Air-gapped signing
Plain definition. Air-gapped signing keeps an XRP Ledger account’s secret keys on an offline computer, which signs transactions that are then moved to an online computer for submission.
Technical definition. The XRP Ledger documentation describes a highly secure signing configuration in which an account’s cryptographic keys are kept on an offline, air-gapped machine. Transactions are signed there, and only the signed transactions are transferred to an online computer and submitted to the XRP Ledger network, so the secret key is never exposed to malicious actors online. Because the offline machine cannot auto-fill fields, every field must be provided at signing, including the Fee (transaction cost) and Sequence (sequence number). The signed transaction binary data must reach the online machine by a secure route, such as a QR code generator on the offline machine and a QR code scanner on the online one.
