What XRP Is Used For

Start with the mechanics. Every XRP Ledger transaction burns a small amount of XRP as a fee. XRP works as a bridge when a payment converts into XRP and straight out again. CoinDesk described one such payment in March 2026 as using XRP for three seconds. Ripple’s On-Demand Liquidity (ODL) documentation says ODL uses XRP this way, and Ripple says it removes the need to prefund.

Next, the pages test how much this happens. Banks do not need XRP. Ripple’s product page, checked 29 September 2026, lists RLUSD, USDC, USDT and fiat as settlement options. The last XRP share figures are Ripple’s own: about 25% of RippleNet volume in Q3 2021 and about 60% of RippleNet payments in 2022. Ripple’s later volume totals give no XRP share.

Last come liquidity and activity. CoinGecko’s report, updated May 2026, found about $15 million of one-sided XRP liquidity within about 1% of price across eight exchanges. Cryptonomist reported about $9 billion of CME and Binance XRP futures volume against $2.2 billion of spot in the 24 hours to 23 September 2026. The sources reviewed give no verified figure for how much payment volume uses XRP today.
