Short answer
Yes for the machinery; current market share is unproven. Ripple’s documentation describes On-Demand Liquidity (ODL) as using XRP as a bridge currency, and XRP Ledger auto-bridging uses XRP when that is cheaper than trading directly. On July 8, 2026, crypto.news reported that inside Ripple’s own product stack the settlement asset is predominantly RLUSD, not XRP.
The full answer
What parts of XRP routing are live?
Ripple’s product documentation (undated, checked September 2026) describes On-Demand Liquidity (ODL) as a RippleNet service that “uses the digital asset XRP as a bridge currency, sourcing liquidity on-demand, and moving funds in real time” [1]. The same page says ODL lets customers move money across borders without needing to pre-fund in any market, and lists automatic payout from certain exchanges to the beneficiary’s bank account [1]. These are Ripple’s descriptions of its own product.
The sources reviewed give no verified figure for how much payment volume uses XRP today.
The XRP Ledger has its own routing. XRPL.org documentation (undated, checked September 2026) says any offer exchanging two tokens can use XRP as an intermediary, that auto-bridging happens automatically on any OfferCreate transaction, and that it uses XRP when doing so is cheaper than trading directly [2]. Offer execution can combine direct and auto-bridged offers to reach the best total exchange rate [2]. Payment transactions do not use auto-bridging by default, but pathfinding can find paths with the same effect [2]. The ledger mechanism is explained in what auto-bridging is and whether it is real, and Ripple’s product side in how Ripple’s payment system decides whether to route through XRP.
Has XRP already won routes in production?
Ripple’s Q3 2021 XRP Markets Report, published in October 2021, called that quarter ODL’s best on record [3]. Ripple reported that ODL transactions were about 25% of RippleNet dollar volume in Q3 2021, that ODL transactions rose 130% quarter over quarter, and that ODL customers could send to over 20 countries [3]. The report said legacy customers such as SBI Remit, which had used RippleNet for fiat-only payments, switched on ODL to eliminate pre-funded accounts [3].
allaboutxrp.com’s partnership review (undated, citing announcements up to August 2026) lists the public evidence of direct XRP use [4]. It reports that a July 2021 Ripple statement says SBI Remit’s ODL remittances from Japan use XRP. The review reports that Ripple identified Cuallix in October 2017 as the first institution to use xRapid and XRP. The review reports that Ripple documented an XRP-based On-Demand Liquidity rollout for Tranglo. The review reports that a current Ripple customer case study for Bitso names both RLUSD and XRP as settlement assets [4].
Why did XRP’s route share rise, did it reach a majority, and what has happened since?
Ripple’s Q3 2021 report tied ODL’s growth to legacy customers switching it on to remove pre-funding, and to customers adopting ODL for treasury payments “as crypto liquidity has improved and the market has continued to mature” [3]. The same report says Ripple’s XRP sales, net of purchases, were $491.74 million in Q3 2021 against $157.92 million the previous quarter, and that all of those sales were attributed to the growth and adoption of ODL [3]. Ripple said it made the sales to improve the ODL experience of certain customers [3].
24/7 Wall St. wrote on April 1, 2026 that only around 40% of RippleNet partners use ODL, the Ripple product that requires XRP as a bridge asset [5]. That figure counts partners, not payment volume. The current split is followed in how much of Ripple’s payment volume uses XRP.
Ledger-wide data from 2026 does not isolate ODL. A Yahoo Finance article reported that XRPL payment volume fell 27%, while stablecoin transfer volume rose 208% to approximately $10 billion, with RLUSD about $9 billion of that [7].
What competes with the XRP route today?
crypto.news reported on July 8, 2026 that inside Ripple’s own product stack the asset doing the settlement work is predominantly RLUSD, Ripple’s dollar stablecoin, not XRP [6]. It reported that the tokenized-Treasury settlement Ripple ran with JPMorgan, Mastercard and Ondo cleared on the XRPL with RLUSD as the instrument that carried the money, and wrote that institutional settlement requires a stable, audited, dollar-denominated instrument [6]. The stablecoin question is examined in whether RLUSD and other stablecoins will replace XRP.
Bank networks are building routes without XRP. 24/7 Wall St. reported on April 1, 2026 that Swift named over 50 banks for its consumer-payments framework, that the framework does not require XRP at any point in the payment flow, and that most Ripple ties among those banks are to network infrastructure rather than to the XRP token [5]. CoinDesk reported that DBS and Citi completed a weekend cross-border USD payment with tokenized deposits on Swift’s Digital Ledger on September 5, 2026, settling in minutes [8].
What is the strongest case against reading this as proof?
allaboutxrp.com states that historical evidence proves a documented use at that time, “not that every current transaction still uses XRP,” and that there is no complete public list proving every Ripple banking customer uses XRP [4]. In its July 2026 analysis of Ripple Prime, crypto.news wrote that skeptics do not deny the infrastructure is real; they deny that infrastructure ownership by the token’s issuer, absent third-party adoption, constitutes token demand, and “on the evidence to date they have been right” [6]. The same article gives the bull reply: RLUSD adoption seeds the ledger with liquidity that XRP bridging would one day plug into, a sequencing claim whose second half it says is not yet observable [6].
Ripple’s 2021 report links its own XRP sales to ODL customers [3], so the 2021 share alone does not show how much XRP liquidity came from independent market makers. Whether that volume was organic is examined in what MoneyGram’s use of XRP proved.
What would XRP need to win more routes?
On the ledger, an XRP route is used when it is cheaper than the direct market [2], so deeper XRP markets against each currency would make XRP routes win more often. Ripple’s own route-selection rules are not in the sources used here. The scale of liquidity involved is estimated in how much XRP liquidity it would take to settle a share of global payments, use beyond Ripple’s products is covered in whether XRP is used for payments outside Ripple, and the next question is whether banks need XRP or only Ripple’s software.
What we know
- Ripple’s product documentation (undated, checked September 2026) says ODL uses XRP as a bridge currency, sourcing liquidity on demand, so customers can move money across borders without pre-funding in any market.
- XRPL.org documentation (undated, checked September 2026) says auto-bridging happens automatically on any OfferCreate transaction and uses XRP when that is cheaper than trading directly; Payment transactions do not auto-bridge by default, but pathfinding can find paths with the same effect.
- Ripple’s Q3 2021 XRP Markets Report (October 2021) said ODL was about 25% of RippleNet dollar volume in Q3 2021, ODL transactions rose 130% quarter over quarter, and ODL customers could send to over 20 countries.
- The same Ripple report said its Q3 2021 XRP sales, net of purchases, were $491.74 million, all attributed to the growth and adoption of ODL.
- allaboutxrp.com’s partnership review (undated, citing announcements up to August 2026) lists SBI Remit’s ODL remittances from Japan (Ripple, July 2021) and a current Bitso case study naming both RLUSD and XRP as settlement assets.
- 24/7 Wall St. (April 1, 2026) wrote that only around 40% of RippleNet partners use ODL.
- crypto.news (July 8, 2026) reported that inside Ripple’s own product stack the settlement asset is predominantly RLUSD, not XRP.
- CCN, citing Blockworks (August 20, 2026), reported that XRPL payment volume fell 27% in Q2 2026 while stablecoin transfer volume rose 208% to about $10 billion, with RLUSD about $9 billion of it.
- CoinDesk (September 7, 2026) reported that DBS and Citi completed a weekend cross-border USD payment with tokenized deposits on Swift’s Digital Ledger on September 5, 2026.
What we reason Analysis
- The ability to route through XRP is documented for both ODL and the XRP Ledger, and XRP carried a measured share of RippleNet volume in 2021, so whether XRP can route is answered; how much it wins today is not. This follows from Ripple’s ODL documentation, XRPL.org’s auto-bridging page and Ripple’s Q3 2021 report.
- The 2021 growth in ODL coincided with Ripple selling $491.74 million of XRP in one quarter to support ODL customers, so the 2021 share by itself does not show how much XRP liquidity came from third parties. This follows from Ripple’s Q3 2021 report.
- On the ledger, a route through XRP is chosen when it is cheaper than the direct market, so deeper XRP markets against each currency would make XRP routes win more often. This follows from XRPL.org’s auto-bridging page; Ripple’s own route-selection rules are not in the sources used here.
- The 2026 figures show stablecoins, mainly RLUSD, doing the settlement work Ripple’s products and ledger transfers report, which is the main competing route to XRP. This follows from crypto.news (July 2026) and CCN citing Blockworks (August 2026).
What's still open
- What share of Ripple’s payment volume did XRP or ODL carry after Q3 2021? Ripple has published no figure, as of September 30, 2026.
- Did XRP carry a majority of RippleNet payments in 2022? No source supports that claim as of September 30, 2026.
- As of September 30, 2026, the rules Ripple’s system uses to choose between an XRP, stablecoin or fiat route were not found in the sources used for this page.
- allaboutxrp.com reports that Tranglo’s current asset mix is not disclosed per payment (review undated, 2026).
In plain English
Ripple’s documentation describes a service that can use XRP as a go-between when money moves from one currency to another, and the XRP Ledger can do the same automatically when that is cheaper. How often XRP wins the job today is not shown in the sources reviewed.
