Short answer
Not on the evidence so far, though RLUSD can stand in for XRP. Ripple lets payment customers settle in RLUSD, USDC, USDT or fiat, so XRP is optional there. On the XRP Ledger, Evernorth reported in July 2026, citing Dune data, that the RLUSD/XRP pair was about 90% of RLUSD trading in the six months through May 2026.
The full answer
RLUSD is Ripple’s stablecoin, which Ripple says is backed one-to-one by U.S. dollar reserves.[1] XRP is the native token of the XRP Ledger, and its price moves: Blockworks reports it entered the second quarter of 2026 near $1.31 and closed it at $1.04.[4] Ripple’s payment page names both as ways to move value across borders.[1] This page looks at two places where one could replace the other: inside Ripple’s payment product, and on the XRP Ledger’s exchange.
Where can RLUSD do XRP’s job?
In Ripple’s own payment product, a stablecoin can take XRP’s place outright. Ripple’s cross-border payments page tells customers they can “pay in, pay out, and settle in RLUSD, USDC, USDT, or fiat.”" It adds that “the settlement layer is decoupled from any single issuer’s token.”[1] The same page’s FAQ describes the sender’s provider converting dollars into “a digital asset like XRP or a stablecoin like RLUSD.”[1] XRP is one option on that menu. It is not a requirement.
No source checked for this page gives the split of Ripple Payments volume between XRP and stablecoins. A May 30, 2026 report by 24/7 Wall St. found that of more than 300 financial institutions using RippleNet infrastructure, only about 40% actively settle in XRP, while the rest use Ripple’s messaging rails without any XRP exposure. The comparison of the two routes is on the page about when a stablecoin like USDC makes more sense than XRP as a bridge.
Where does RLUSD feed XRP instead?
On the XRP Ledger’s built-in exchange, the figures available through May 2026 point the other way. In a filing with the SEC dated July 13, 2026, Evernorth cited Dune data showing the RLUSD/XRP pair cleared about $900 million in the six months through May 2026. Evernorth said that equalled “90% of all RLUSD trading” on the ledger.[3] Put simply, most RLUSD trading volume there was against XRP.
The ledger’s design adds a second link. XRPL.org explains that auto-bridging routes a trade between two tokens through XRP “when doing so is cheaper than trading directly.”[2] XRPL.org says auto-bridging serves “to improve liquidity across all asset pairs.”[2] It follows that a deeper RLUSD/XRP market can make the XRP route cheaper for other token pairs too. The mechanics are covered on the page about whether an RLUSD payment can route through XRP automatically.
RLUSD also appears as the loan in XRP-backed credit. Flare reported on September 24, 2026 that Sentora’s RLUSD vault on Morpho, on Ethereum mainnet, held 10.6 million FXRP as collateral against $7.9 million of RLUSD supplied.[8] Flare calls FXRP “a 1:1 representation” of XRP and sums up the market as “Supply FXRP, borrow RLUSD.”[8] In that market RLUSD is what gets borrowed and XRP is what secures it.
Who is making the case that RLUSD helps XRP?
Evernorth is the main source for the claim. Its filing states: “RLUSD doesn’t replace XRP. Every transaction settles on the XRP Ledger, and fees are paid in XRP.”[3] Blockworks describes Evernorth as “a Ripple-backed entity” that held 473.1 million XRP as of December 31, 2025.[4] With a holding that size, Evernorth has a direct interest in that conclusion.
The Blockworks report on the second quarter of 2026, which Ripple commissioned, is more cautious. It says XRP “is used as a bridge asset for currency conversion and liquidity,” and that “tokenized assets, stablecoins, and decentralized liquidity could increase its use indirectly by generating additional transaction activity on XRPL.”[4] In the same sentence the report gives a different item, the proposed Lending Protocol, as what “could directly expand XRP utility.”[4] XRPL.org says transactions settle “for fractions of a cent,”[9] so fees alone would give XRP little direct demand.
What is the strongest evidence against the “RLUSD helps XRP” view?
Three data points cut against it.
First, more RLUSD sits on another chain than on the XRP Ledger. In a capture at 19:29 UTC on September 29, 2026, DefiLlama counted $1.396 billion of RLUSD on Ethereum and $1.121 billion on the XRP Ledger.[6] RLUSD held and traded on Ethereum does not pass through the XRP Ledger’s exchange.
Second, the XRP/RLUSD liquidity pool is thin next to the stablecoins it sits beside. CryptoSlate valued the pool at about $4.6 million on September 12, 2026, roughly 0.41% of DefiLlama’s daily stablecoin total for the ledger.[7] The same article called the larger stablecoin base an opportunity for XRP liquidity, not a confirmed source of sustained token demand.[7]
Third, stablecoin activity on the ledger is mostly RLUSD. DefiLlama showed $1.213 billion of stablecoins there in a capture at 19:29 UTC on September 29, 2026, with RLUSD at 92.46%.[5] Blockworks put stablecoin transfer volume at $10.00 billion in the second quarter of 2026, with RLUSD about $9.00 billion.[4] A plain stablecoin transfer from one account to another does not need to touch XRP. The case that direct stablecoin routes could squeeze XRP out is set out on the page about whether direct stablecoin pairs could make XRP unnecessary on its own ledger.
What measurable evidence would show RLUSD crowding XRP out rather than feeding it?
Four figures would show the direction, and each has a publisher or a gap:
| Measure | Crowding out would look like | Who publishes it |
|---|---|---|
| RLUSD/XRP share of RLUSD trading on the ledger | Falling well below the 90% Evernorth reported through May 2026[3] | Evernorth, from Dune data; no later figure found |
| Stablecoin supply on the ledger against XRP liquidity | Supply rising while the XRP/RLUSD pool stays near $4.6 million[5][7] | DefiLlama; CryptoSlate for the pool |
| RLUSD on the XRP Ledger against Ethereum | The Ethereum share growing faster[6] | DefiLlama |
| Share of Ripple Payments volume settled in XRP | Falling toward zero | Not published by Ripple |
The last row matters most for Ripple’s payment business, and it is the one with no public number. Readers interested in the money side can compare with the page on who earns the interest on RLUSD’s reserves. The trading side is followed on the page about how much XRP Ledger trading involves RLUSD and XRP, and the wider list of jobs XRP can do under a dollar-facing product is on the page about XRP’s roles in tokenized finance.
What we know
- Ripple’s cross-border payments page, checked September 29, 2026, lists RLUSD, USDC, USDT or fiat as settlement options and says the settlement layer is not tied to any single issuer’s token.
- XRPL.org documents auto-bridging: the ledger routes a token trade through XRP when that is cheaper than the direct pair.
- In a July 13, 2026 SEC filing, Evernorth cited Dune data showing the RLUSD/XRP pair cleared about $900 million in the six months through May 2026, about 90% of all RLUSD trading on the XRP Ledger.
- DefiLlama showed $1.213 billion of stablecoins on the XRP Ledger in a capture at 19:29 UTC on September 29, 2026, with RLUSD at 92.46%.
- In a capture at 19:29 UTC the same day, DefiLlama counted $1.396 billion of RLUSD on Ethereum and $1.121 billion on the XRP Ledger.
- CryptoSlate valued the XRP/RLUSD AMM pool at about $4.6 million on September 12, 2026, roughly 0.41% of DefiLlama’s daily stablecoin total for the ledger.
What we reason Analysis
- RLUSD replaces XRP wherever a Ripple Payments customer picks a stablecoin to settle; this is drawn from Ripple’s product page, which gives no volume split.
- On the XRP Ledger’s exchange, RLUSD fed XRP trading more than it bypassed it in the six months through May 2026. That rests on Evernorth’s 90% pair share, a figure from a company that holds XRP and covers one six-month window.
- XRP’s direct fee income from stablecoin activity is likely small. Blockworks describes stablecoins’ effect on XRP use as indirect, and XRPL.org puts transaction costs at fractions of a cent.
What's still open
- No published figure splits Ripple Payments volume between XRP and stablecoins; Ripple’s product pages and the registry were checked on September 29, 2026.
- The RLUSD/XRP share after May 2026 was not found in the saved Evernorth filings or other sources in the registry as of September 29, 2026.
In plain English
XRP’s price goes up and down. Ripple says RLUSD is backed one to one by US dollar reserves. Ripple lets its payment customers pick either one, or other dollar tokens, or ordinary bank money, so in those payments RLUSD can take XRP’s place. On the XRP Ledger itself, one company counted about 90% of RLUSD trading against XRP in the six months through May 2026. No later figure had been found by September 29, 2026, so whether that lasts is not known.
