Stablecoins
Plain definition. The UK Financial Conduct Authority describes qualifying stablecoins as cryptoassets that try to keep a steady value by referencing one or more government-issued (fiat) currencies.
Technical definition. In its consultation paper CP25/14, the Financial Conduct Authority defines qualifying stablecoins as cryptoassets that aim to maintain a stable value by referencing one or more fiat currencies, and says they could make payments and settlement on blockchain technology more efficient. The regulator’s proposed rules aim to ensure that regulated stablecoins maintain their value. The UK Financial Conduct Authority said in its consultation paper CP25/14 that its proposed rules also mean customers should be provided with clear information on how the backing assets are being managed.
