Could Ethereum or Solana become the universal bridge instead of XRP?
Also asked as: “What is the strongest counterargument to XRP as universal bridge?” · “Why doesn't ETH become the universal bridge?”

Short answer
Neither ETH nor SOL has been shown working as a bridge between currencies, though both chains hold far more DeFi value than the XRP Ledger. CoinDesk reported on March 13, 2026 that Ethereum had over $40 billion in total value locked, Solana roughly $4 billion and the XRP Ledger $47.54 million.
The full answer
How far ahead are Ethereum and Solana on decentralized finance?
By a wide margin. CoinDesk reported on March 13, 2026 that the XRP Ledger’s total value locked stood at $47.54 million on DefiLlama data, and gave roughly $4 billion for Solana and over $40 billion for Ethereum as comparison [1]. The same CoinDesk article called the XRP Ledger’s DeFi layer “a rounding error relative to its valuation” [1]. CoinDesk reported daily volume of $4 million to $8 million on recent data, without naming the venue [1].
Ethereum is also a home for Ripple’s own stablecoin. CryptoSlate reported on July 6, 2026 that Ripple’s RLUSD page describes the token as natively issued on XRPL and Ethereum [2].
On CoinDesk’s March figures, Ethereum’s DeFi value was more than 800 times the XRP Ledger’s and Solana’s about 84 times. That gap makes Ethereum the strongest counterargument to XRP as a universal bridge. Current stablecoin and tokenized-Treasury totals for Ethereum and Solana are not given in the sources here; the page on how XRP Ledger activity compares with Ethereum, Solana and Stellar covers the comparison.
Does a DeFi lead make ETH or SOL a bridge currency?
Not by itself. Total value locked counts money deposited in applications such as lending and trading pools. It does not record which asset sits between two currencies when one is swapped for another. A chain can lead on deposits while its payments run through stablecoins rather than its native token. None of the sources cited here measure which of these happens on Ethereum or Solana.
Do Ethereum DEX aggregators already bridge via ETH in routes?
As of October 1, 2026, no public measurement is known of how often decentralized exchange aggregators on Ethereum or Solana route a trade through ETH or SOL instead of through a stablecoin. Without that data, it is not possible to say whether ETH or SOL already acts as an intermediate asset inside routes, or how often. The gap is logged for research.
It also routes across v2 and v3 pools “to find the best price.”[10] The published router code says it “searches for the most efficient way to swap token A for token B, considering splitting swaps across multiple routes and gas costs.”[11] The router picks whichever route prices best.
Where does the XRP Ledger hold ground against Ethereum?
Tokenized assets are one area. CoinDesk reported on March 13, 2026 that $461 million in distributed asset value and $1.5 billion in represented asset value put the XRP Ledger ahead of several larger chains in specific tokenization categories [1]. The same article said the ledger “has a foothold that most competitors don’t” if the tokenization thesis plays out [1].
Ripple’s stablecoin is another. CryptoSlate reported on July 6, 2026 that RLUSD on Ethereum fell 26.61% over 30 days to $789.8 million, and that the XRP Ledger held about 51.7% of RLUSD supply [2]. The Crypto Basic reported on July 30, 2026 that Ripple first focused RLUSD on Ethereum and that the XRP Ledger overtook Ethereum in RLUSD supply in June 2026 [3]. Analytics Insight, citing DefiLlama, put XRP Ledger stablecoin market capitalization at about $1.159 billion on September 25, 2026 [4].
Distribution is the third. Ripple said on November 5, 2025 that Ripple Payments is a full-service cross-border platform using RLUSD and XRP, and that total Ripple Payments volumes had passed $95 billion [5].
What is the strongest evidence against XRP as the bridge?
Three pieces of evidence cut against it, and they apply to native tokens generally, not only to XRP. First, CoinDesk wrote on March 13, 2026 that ledger activity increasingly comes from RLUSD and tokenized assets that flow through XRP as a bridge currency but do not create sustained demand for the token, and that a payment using XRP for three seconds is not like staking ETH or locking SOL for months [1]. Second, Ripple said on June 9, 2026 that Bitso’s peso stablecoin MXNB will be issued on the XRP Ledger and, together with RLUSD, support settlement for U.S.–Mexico enterprise payments; the release does not describe XRP as part of that flow [6]. Third, CryptoSlate reported on July 6, 2026 that the XRP Ledger held only about 0.29% of a $311.39 billion global stablecoin supply [2].
If stablecoin pairs carry corridors directly, the contest is less XRP against ETH or SOL than any native bridge asset against none. The page on whether direct stablecoin pairs could make XRP unnecessary follows that risk, and the case against institutional use is set out in why an institution might choose not to use XRP.
Version 2 let anyone create a pool for “any two ERC-20s.”[8] Uniswap Labs wrote at the time that it still expected “ETH pairs being very popular,” and that routers would choose “between direct and multi-step swaps.”[9]
XRPL.org says the ledger’s built-in exchange uses auto-bridging, trading “token-to-XRP and XRP-to-token” when that is cheaper than a direct token-to-token trade.[12] RippleX’s David Schwartz argued in 2024 that liquidity in N XRP pairs can serve on the order of N-squared currency pairs.[13] Ripple’s documentation still describes its On-Demand Liquidity service as using XRP as a bridge currency.[14]
Can XRP itself be used on Ethereum or Solana?
In wrapped form, on some chains. CoinGecko described Wrapped XRP (Universal), or uXRP, on September 29, 2026 as a tokenized version of XRP for trading across blockchains such as Base, Polygon and Arbitrum, with a market capitalization of $2,709,303 [7]. The details are on whether XRP can be used on other blockchains.
What would settle the question?
Three measures would move this from reasoning to evidence. One is routing data showing how often aggregators on Ethereum and Solana pass trades through ETH or SOL. Another is the share of Ripple Payments volume that uses XRP rather than RLUSD. A third is whether stablecoin-to-stablecoin pairs such as RLUSD and MXNB take corridors that XRP would otherwise carry. On current evidence, Ethereum leads on breadth and the XRP Ledger’s case rests on tokenization, RLUSD concentration and Ripple’s distribution. What could turn that into a lasting advantage is examined in what would give XRP a real competitive moat, and institution-focused chains are compared in how the XRP Ledger compares with Canton, Hedera and others.

What we reason Analysis
- Ethereum’s reported DeFi value was more than 800 times the XRP Ledger’s and Solana’s about 84 times, as of March 13, 2026. This follows from CoinDesk’s figures of over $40 billion, roughly $4 billion and $47.54 million.
- Total value locked counts money deposited in applications. It does not show which asset sits between two currencies in a swap, so the DeFi lead alone does not make ETH or SOL a bridge asset. This follows from what the CoinDesk TVL figures measure.
- Ripple moved RLUSD supply from Ethereum toward the XRP Ledger in 2026, which points to the issuer of the ledger’s main stablecoin favouring its own ledger for payments. This follows from the CryptoSlate and Crypto Basic RLUSD supply reports.
- The strongest counterargument applies to every native token, XRP included: Ripple’s own peso corridor is described as a stablecoin-to-stablecoin pair. If stablecoin pairs carry corridors directly, the contest is less XRP against ETH or SOL than any native bridge asset against no bridge asset. This follows from Ripple’s June 9, 2026 Bitso release and CoinDesk’s description of XRP as a transient bridge.
- On present evidence Ethereum leads on breadth of applications, and the XRP Ledger’s case rests on tokenized assets, RLUSD concentration and Ripple’s payment distribution. This follows from the TVL, tokenization and RLUSD figures above.
What's still open
- As of October 1, 2026, no public measurement is known of how often Ethereum or Solana DEX aggregators route trades through ETH or SOL rather than stablecoins. Searched:
- As of October 1, 2026, I could not find current stablecoin and tokenized-Treasury totals for Ethereum and Solana on the DefiLlama chains page.
- Ripple’s November 5, 2025 release gives no split of the $95 billion Ripple Payments volume between XRP, RLUSD and other rails.
- As of October 1, 2026, the sources checked do not establish this: The release gives no split of that figure between XRP, RLUSD and other rails. How Ripple’s system routes a given payment is covered on how Ripple’s payment system decides whether to route through XRP. Searched:

In plain English
Ethereum and Solana are other blockchains with far more money parked in their finance apps than the XRP Ledger. That does not show their own coins are used to swap one national currency for another, and no public data measuring that turned up. Ripple has moved more of its dollar token onto the XRP Ledger and says its payment service uses XRP. Yet one of its own new payment routes is described with two stablecoins, a dollar token and a peso token, and no XRP, so which asset carries payments between currencies is still open.
