Short answer
These players compete in different layers, and none leads in all of them. 24/7 Wall St. reported on April 1, 2026 that Swift connects over 11,500 financial institutions across more than 200 countries. crypto.news called JPMorgan’s Kinexys the largest bank-run tokenization platform in July 2026. On the XRP Ledger, XRP can bridge trades between two tokens automatically.

Where does each competitor lead on the evidence held?
Swift. 24/7 Wall St. reported on April 1, 2026 that Swift connects over 11,500 financial institutions across more than 200 countries and processes around 44 million messages a day [3]. The same report said Swift processes over $150 trillion in cross-border payments a year and that Ripple’s network is a fraction of that size [3]. CoinDesk wrote on Sep 7, 2026 that Swift’s “$1.5 quadrillion network” faces pressure from stablecoins and tokenized deposits that settle around the clock. 24/7 Wall St. also reported on April 1, 2026 that no blockchain network, including Ripple, comes close to Swift’s reach, and that Swift says 75% of its transactions reach the destination bank within 10 minutes [3]. Swift is also building its own ledger. CoinDesk reported on September 7, 2026 that a pilot of Swift’s blockchain ledger launched in July 2026 with 17 banks [4]. On 5 September 2026 DBS and Citi made a weekend USD payment with tokenized deposits on it, which CoinDesk called the second confirmed live transaction, after HSBC and Standard Chartered’s transfer in August [4]. The ledger’s status is covered on What is Swift’s blockchain ledger, and is it live?.
JPMorgan. crypto.news wrote on July 8, 2026 that JPMorgan’s Kinexys is the largest bank-run tokenization platform in existence. The same article said JPMorgan runs its own competing tokenization ledger [5]. The head-to-head is on Is JPMorgan’s JPM Coin or Kinexys a competitor to XRP?.
Circle. Circle appears in two kinds of sources reviewed here: a crypto.news report on the DTCC’s tokenization working group, and Circle’s own Q2 2026 earnings call, as transcribed by Motley Fool on August 12, 2026 [11]. crypto.news reported that in May 2026 the DTCC named Ripple Prime to its roughly 50-firm tokenization working group alongside JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, BlackRock, Citi, Circle and Ondo Finance [5]. On that call, Circle reported CPN annualized payment volume of $15 billion at the end of Q2, rising to $23 billion as of July 31, 2026, on a trailing 30-day basis, and USDC on-chain transaction volume of $14.8 trillion for the quarter [11]. As of October 1, 2026, no figure for USDC supply is available from the sources reviewed. The topic continues on Can USDC and Circle do cross-border payments without XRP?.
Stellar. crypto.news reported on July 8, 2026 that in late May 2026 the DTCC announced it would integrate the Stellar network into its tokenized securities platform as the first public blockchain in its strategy. The same report said the DTCC has not named the XRP Ledger [5]. The fuller comparison is on Is Stellar (XLM) a real competitor to XRP?.
Ethereum and Solana. Schwab said on April 16, 2026 that bitcoin and ethereum together represent about three-quarters of crypto market capitalization [10]. icobench reported in May 2026 that Ripple Prime integrated Coinbase Derivatives so its institutional clients can trade Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP and Solana futures [8]. icobench also reported that Ripple Prime CEO Mike Higgins said on 12 May 2026 that XRP is positioned as institutional-grade collateral alongside Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana [8]. The sources reviewed do not establish how Ethereum’s or Solana’s activity compares with the XRP Ledger’s, so it stays among the open questions. That question is on Could Ethereum or Solana become the universal bridge instead of XRP?.
Ripple and XRP. XRPL.org states that auto-bridging uses XRP when that is cheaper than trading two tokens directly. It also states that one order can combine direct and XRP-bridged offers for the best total rate [2]. Payment transactions do not auto-bridge by default, but pathfinding can find paths with the same effect [2]. XRPL.org gives the minimum cost of a standard transaction as 10 drops, paid by destroying XRP (checked September 29, 2026) [1]. On the company side, crypto.news reported on July 8, 2026 that Ripple Prime clears more than $3 trillion in trades a year for over 300 institutional clients [5]. crypto.news reported on September 2, 2026 that Ripple’s RLUSD crossed $2 billion in supply in late August 2026, with more than $1 billion issued on the XRP Ledger [9]. 24/7 Wall St. reported on April 1, 2026 that Japanese financial institutions presented live pilot data in which XRP payments settled 60% cheaper than SWIFT and in under four seconds. No independent check of those pilot figures is public in the sources reviewed [3]. The same publication argued that in the India-to-Pakistan, UAE-to-Philippines and Japan-to-Thailand corridors, Ripple’s local bank partnerships and existing ODL liquidity give it an edge Swift’s new framework has not solved yet [3].
On these sources, each player leads a different layer. Swift leads in bank reach, JPMorgan in bank-run tokenization, and Stellar in being named by the DTCC. The XRP Ledger leads in having a native bridge asset on its exchange. The sources reviewed give no basis for ranking Ethereum or Solana on payments, and Circle’s own Q2 2026 figures [11] count its own network’s activity, not a figure the others report on the same basis.
How big is each competitor in measured volume, on the same period?
One same-period measure covers more than one of these networks. crypto.news reported on July 26, 2026, citing RWA.xyz, that in the six months to that date the XRP Ledger added about $2.6 billion of tokenized real-world asset value, excluding stablecoins [7]. BNB Chain ranked first with about $3 billion and Stellar followed with about $2.1 billion over the same six months [7]. crypto.news also reported that a single energy token, JMWH, accounts for about 51% of the XRP Ledger’s total real-world asset value. That token had 19 holders and no monthly transfers, and works mainly as a record of energy contracts [7].
The other volume figures measure different things. 24/7 Wall St. reported on April 1, 2026 that Swift handles over $150 trillion of cross-border payments a year [3]. crypto.news reported on July 8, 2026 that Ripple Prime clears over $3 trillion of trades a year [5]. CoinDesk described Swift on September 7, 2026 as a “$1.5 quadrillion network” under pressure from stablecoins and tokenized deposits [4]; no source reviewed reconciles that description with the $150 trillion figure.
Payment flow and brokerage clearing are different activities, so the Swift and Ripple Prime figures cannot rank one against the other. The two Swift figures differ by a factor of ten, and this page uses neither as a comparison base. As of October 1, 2026, no public same-period payment volume is available for JPMorgan Kinexys, Ethereum or Solana in the sources reviewed; Circle’s Q2 2026 figures come from its own earnings call [11].
Are Visa and Mastercard stablecoin settlement programmes competitors too?
Both card networks appear in the sources as working alongside Ripple. Yahoo Finance reported on June 10, 2026 that Mastercard took part with JPMorgan’s Kinexys, Ripple and Ondo in the May 2026 tokenized Treasury redemption on the XRP Ledger [6]. crypto.news reported on July 8, 2026 that RLUSD is Ripple’s entry into the Open USD consortium alongside Visa, Mastercard, Stripe and BlackRock [5]. Visa said on December 16, 2025 that Cross River Bank and Lead Bank had started settling with Visa in USDC over the Solana blockchain, and that it has active stablecoin settlement pilots in several countries in Europe, LAC, AP and CEMEA [13]. As of October 1, 2026, the sources reviewed do not describe Mastercard’s own stablecoin settlement programme, or the volumes of either programme.
On this evidence the card networks show up as fellow consortium members and pilot partners. The sources do not show where they compete with Ripple or XRP, or by how much.
Which of these competitors also use XRP or the XRP Ledger somewhere?
JPMorgan and Mastercard have used the XRP Ledger. Yahoo Finance reported that in May 2026 JPMorgan’s Kinexys, Mastercard, Ripple and Ondo ran the first cross-border, cross-bank redemption of a tokenized Treasury fund on the XRP Ledger, settling in under five seconds [6]. crypto.news reported that the instrument carrying the money in that settlement was RLUSD [5]. Yahoo Finance reported that in the JPMorgan pilot RLUSD did the bridging, the banks handled the cash leg, and XRP covered the network fee [6].
Swift’s bank members overlap with Ripple’s. 24/7 Wall St. reported that at least 30 of the 50+ banks Swift named for its consumer-payments framework have Ripple ties. Most of those ties are to the network infrastructure rather than to the XRP token, and Swift’s framework does not require XRP at any point in the payment flow [3]. The publication said these banks now operate inside both ecosystems at the same time [3]. It also described a route in which a payment can flow through SWIFT, be routed via Thunes and settle on Ripple’s ODL rails using XRP as the bridge asset, without any bank being forced to use XRP directly [3]. 24/7 Wall St. put the share of RippleNet partners that use ODL, the product that requires XRP, at around 40%, and said RippleNet can be run entirely in fiat [3].
Circle sits in the same DTCC working group as Ripple Prime [5]. As of October 1, 2026, the sources reviewed show no use of XRP or the XRP Ledger by Stellar, Ethereum or Solana. Ripple Prime has integrated Coinbase Derivatives, which lets its institutional clients trade Ethereum and Solana futures; that runs the other way [8].
24/7 Wall St. reported on 1 April 2026 that only around 40% of RippleNet partners use On-Demand Liquidity, the product that requires XRP as a bridge [3].
24/7 Wall St. reported that at least 30 of the 50+ banks Swift named have Ripple ties, including Santander, HSBC, Deutsche Bank, Standard Chartered and JPMorgan, and that Swift did not mention Ripple [3].
The same report said Thunes, a Ripple partner since 2020, brought stablecoin payouts to all 11,500 SWIFT-connected banks, and that a payment can now flow through SWIFT, route via Thunes and settle on On-Demand Liquidity with XRP as the bridge, without any bank being forced to use XRP directly [3].
What is Ripple/XRP’s main strength, and is integration what sets it apart?
Ripple holds pieces in several layers inside one group. It has a ledger [2] and a dollar stablecoin, RLUSD [9], which did the bridging in a pilot with JPMorgan and Mastercard: the May cross-border, cross-bank redemption of a tokenized Treasury fund on the XRP Ledger [6]. No other player in the sources reviewed spans the same set. The integration benefits the company more clearly than the token. crypto.news wrote on July 8, 2026 that every institutional win that runs through RLUSD is a win for Ripple, for the ledger, and only residually for the token [5]. Whether integration is the deciding difference is examined on What actually makes XRP different from Stellar and other fast networks: speed or integration?. Institution-focused chains outside this list are compared on How does the XRP Ledger compare with Canton, Hedera and other institution-focused chains?. Bitcoin is compared on How does XRP compare with Bitcoin and other major coins?.
What is the strongest evidence against XRP in this comparison?
The strongest critique comes from crypto.news on July 8, 2026. It reported that inside Ripple’s own product stack the asset doing the settlement work is predominantly RLUSD, not XRP [5]. Its answer to how much of Ripple Prime’s business becomes XRP demand today was “a sliver” [5]. It described Ripple Prime accepting XRP as collateral and Ripple’s stablecoin settling Ripple’s pilots as self-referential, and wrote that the market discounts announcements in which Ripple is both counterparties [5]. It reported that the DTCC’s tokenization service is not built on the XRP Ledger [5]. It argued that the likely output of the DTCC’s 50-firm committee is a standard that leaves the XRP Ledger as one candidate among several [5]. 24/7 Wall St. reported on April 1, 2026 that Swift is building its own shared ledger for real-time, 24/7 settlement without relying on Ripple or any other external blockchain [3]. The case from the institution’s side is on Why might an institution choose not to use XRP?.

- 1 April 2026: 24/7 Wall St. reported that over 50 banks had signed up to Swift’s retail framework, more than 25 of them committing to go live by June 2026, and that the framework does not require XRP at any point in the payment flow.
- XRP Academy, a publisher focused on XRP, said in a March 12, 2026 article that the XRP Ledger held roughly $400 million to $600 million in DeFi liquidity in early 2026, about 0.5% of Ethereum’s total value locked, and that Ethereum had more than $50 billion locked in DeFi protocols. Crypto.com’s undated Ethereum versus Ripple guide says Ethereum leads in dapps and has a longer record of offering smart contracts and NFTs than the XRP Ledger, but as of October 1, 2026, no source reviewed gives a dated, independent measure of application activity on the two networks, such as user or transaction counts for apps.
What we reason Analysis
- On the public sources, each player leads a different layer: Swift in bank reach, JPMorgan in bank-run tokenization, Stellar in being named by the DTCC, and the XRP Ledger in having a native bridge asset on its exchange. This follows from the 24/7 Wall St., crypto.news and XRPL.org facts listed under known.
- Ripple is the only player in these sources that combines a ledger with a bridge asset, a dollar stablecoin and a prime broker in one group. This follows from the XRPL.org auto-bridging page and the crypto.news reports on RLUSD and Ripple Prime.
- That combination benefits Ripple more clearly than it benefits XRP, because settlement inside Ripple’s stack runs mostly on RLUSD. This follows from crypto.news (July 8, 2026).
- The volume figures held for Swift ($150 trillion of yearly cross-border payments) and Ripple Prime ($3 trillion of yearly clearing) measure different activities and cannot rank the two. This follows from 24/7 Wall St. (April 1, 2026) and crypto.news (July 8, 2026).
What's still open
- As of October 1, 2026, no same-period payment volume is available for JPMorgan Kinexys, Ethereum or Solana in the sources reviewed. Searched:
- As of October 1, 2026, the sources reviewed do not describe Mastercard’s own stablecoin settlement programme, or the volume of Visa’s. Searched:
- CoinDesk (September 7, 2026) called Swift a $1.5 quadrillion network, while 24/7 Wall St. (April 1, 2026) reported over $150 trillion of yearly cross-border payments. As of October 1, 2026, I could not find any source that reconciles the two figures.
- As of October 1, 2026, the sources checked do not establish that any one player leads overall: according to 24/7 Wall St., Swift links far more banks than any blockchain; crypto.news wrote in July 2026 that JPMorgan’s Kinexys is the largest bank-run tokenization platform in existence; and the DTCC announced it would add Stellar to its tokenized securities platform. In plain English
Several companies and networks are trying to move money between countries faster, and each is strong in a different place.
