What actually makes XRP different from Stellar and other fast networks: speed or integration?

Short answer
Speed alone does not set XRP apart: a Stellar Development Foundation post describes MoneyGram’s Stellar pilot settling near-instantly in USDC. The rarer feature is a built-in exchange that routes trades through XRP when cheaper, beside Ripple’s custody, treasury and brokerage products. Whether that integration creates demand for XRP itself is not shown as of October 2026.
The full answer
Is speed what sets XRP apart?
The XRP Ledger is cheap to use. XRPL.org documentation, checked on September 29, 2026, sets the minimum cost of a standard transaction at 10 drops of XRP, and that XRP is destroyed rather than paid to anyone [1]. Yahoo Finance reported that the average XRPL transaction cost fell to $0.00024 during the quarter, with only about 40,600 XRP burned [5]. 24/7 Wall St reported on April 1, 2026 that Japanese financial institutions presented pilot data showing cross-border payments using XRP settled 60% cheaper than SWIFT and in under four seconds [4].
Other networks describe similar speed. A Stellar Development Foundation post says MoneyGram’s partnership enables cash funding and payout in local currency with Stellar USDC and near-instant backend settlement, and that pilot participants sent payments internationally via Stellar USDC [3].
Settlement speed is not unique to XRPL, and the MoneyGram pilot shows a fast network carrying payments in a stablecoin rather than in the network’s own token. The Stellar comparison page covers that network in more detail.
MoneyGram’s partnership with the Stellar Development Foundation enables “cash funding and payout in local currency with Stellar USDC, complete with near-instant backend settlement capabilities.”[3] The Stellar Development Foundation and MoneyGram said on June 10, 2022 that the service had launched using Circle’s USDC, and that settlement with MoneyGram would “occur in near-real-time using USDC.”[12] The coin that settles is a dollar stablecoin.
What does the XRP Ledger do that ties XRP into trading?
The ledger has a built-in exchange with auto-bridging. XRPL.org says auto-bridging improves liquidity across asset pairs by using XRP when that is cheaper than trading directly, and that offer execution can combine direct and XRP-routed offers for the best total rate [2]. Any offer that exchanges two tokens can use XRP as an intermediary, and this happens automatically on any OfferCreate transaction [2]. The documentation’s example fills a thin GBP to BRL order by buying XRP with GBP from one trader and selling that XRP for BRL to another [2]. Payment transactions do not use auto-bridging by default, though pathfinding can find paths with the same effect [2]. The mechanism is explained on what auto-bridging is.
The ledger has added controls aimed at institutions. crypto.news, reporting Messari’s Q1 2026 data, wrote that Permissioned Domains, Permissioned DEX and Token Escrow went live on XRPL, and described XRPL as supporting payments, token issuance, decentralized liquidity, real-world assets and stablecoins [6]. DefiLlama showed $1.213 billion of stablecoins on XRPL on September 29, 2026, with RLUSD at 92.46% [7].
Auto-bridging, not speed, is the ledger feature that places XRP inside trades by design. Whether other ledgers route through their native asset the same way is not known from public sources as of October 1, 2026.
What does Ripple add around the ledger?
Ripple sells several products that sit next to the ledger. Ripple said on April 1, 2026 that Ripple Treasury reached general availability, with XRP and RLUSD balances shown in the same account structure as cash [8]. Ripple says treasury teams can manage fiat and digital liquidity in one system, eliminating separate platforms and reconciliation workflows [8]. Links to cross-border and intercompany settlement and overnight repo yield are described by Ripple as coming soon, not live [8].
Ripple announced on April 30, 2026 a partnership with Kbank to deploy wallet infrastructure through Ripple Custody, which Ripple says spares the bank the cost, complexity and operational burden of building it in-house [9]. Kbank’s chief executive tied the deal to stablecoin-based remittance [9].
crypto.news reported on July 8, 2026 that Ripple Prime clears more than $3 trillion in trades a year for over 300 institutional clients, and accepts XRP as collateral within its own brokerage [10]. Credit is not yet on the ledger: Ripple wrote on June 29, 2026 that the XRPL Lending Protocol (XLS-65, XLS-66) is subject to validator approval and can be tested on devnet [11]. The split between working and pending pieces is tracked on which parts of the stack are live.
How much does integration save an institution, and is it measured?
No independent measurement of the saving was found as of October 1, 2026. The figures that exist come from Ripple or from single pilots.
Ripple argues that building a financing layer on the same network reduces operational complexity and lets institutions manage more of the financial lifecycle in one place [11]. Its lending article gives an illustrative case of replacing a bank credit line that might cost 300 to 400 basis points [11]; that is an example, not a measured result. The Treasury and Kbank claims above are also Ripple’s own [8][9]. The 60% saving in the Japanese pilot compares XRP payments with SWIFT, not one integrated supplier with several separate ones [4].
24/7 Wall St framed the trade-off on April 1, 2026: bank use of XRP depends on whether the cost savings of using XRP as a bridge outweigh the compliance burden of holding a digital asset on the balance sheet [4].
Fewer vendors, contracts and reconciliations would have a cost value, so a network that is cheaper per transaction could cost more overall if it needs more suppliers around it. No public source puts a number on this for Ripple’s stack.
Can a competitor assemble the same integration through partners?
Several already assemble parts of it. The MoneyGram pilot is itself a partnership between MoneyGram and the Stellar Development Foundation [3]. 24/7 Wall St reported on April 1, 2026 that Thunes brought stablecoin payouts to all 11,500 SWIFT-connected banks through their existing SWIFT messaging [4], that Swift’s new retail framework does not require XRP at any point, and that Swift is separately building its own blockchain-based shared ledger [4].
crypto.news reported on July 8, 2026 that in late May the DTCC announced it would integrate the Stellar network into its tokenized securities platform, and that the DTCC has not named the XRPL [10]. The same report describes JPMorgan’s Kinexys as the largest bank-run tokenization platform in existence [10]. Institution-focused chains are compared on how the XRP Ledger compares with Canton and Hedera.
The difference Ripple can claim is single ownership of many pieces, not that the pieces cannot be bought elsewhere. Whether institutions prefer one supplier over a set of partners has not been tested publicly.
Does the integration help XRP, or mainly Ripple?
The strongest critique is that the integrated stack mostly runs on RLUSD and pays Ripple. crypto.news wrote on July 8, 2026 that inside Ripple’s own product stack the asset doing the settlement work is predominantly RLUSD, not XRP, and that fee burn is negligible and collateral is real but largely internal, adding up to “a sliver” of XRP demand [10]. It wrote that Ripple Prime’s revenues belong to Ripple’s shareholders, not to XRP, and called the arrangement self-referential [10]. 24/7 Wall St reported that RippleNet can run entirely in fiat and that only around 40% of RippleNet partners use On-Demand Liquidity, the product that requires XRP [4]. CCN wrote on August 20, 2026 that stablecoin and tokenization growth strengthens the case for XRPL as infrastructure but not necessarily for XRP as an investment [5].
The bull reply, as crypto.news put it, is that RLUSD adoption seeds the ledger with liquidity that XRP collateral and bridging could later plug into; the report adds that this second step is not yet observable [10]. The full argument is on whether Ripple’s success lifts XRP, and the reasons a bank might pass on XRP are on why institutions might skip XRP.

- Stellar’s minimum fee is 100 stroops per operation (Stellar docs, checked September 29, 2026); Solana’s base fee is 5,000 lamports per signature, before any priority fee (Solana docs).
- On June 10, 2022, the Stellar Development Foundation and MoneyGram said settlement with MoneyGram for its cash service on Stellar would use USDC.
- MoneyGram’s 2022 SEC proxy says it agreed on June 17, 2019 to use Ripple’s ODL and XRP, was compensated by Ripple in XRP for developing and bringing liquidity to foreign exchange markets, and ended the agreement on March 7, 2021.
- April 8, 2026: Circle launched a stablecoin payments service offering ‘a single integration’ without holding digital assets (Circle).
- Ripple’s Custody documentation, which has no publication date, lists fee rules for each network: the XRP Ledger uses the network base fee with an optional priority multiplier, Stellar has a minimal fee of 0.00001 XLM (100 stroops), and Solana charges a base fee of 5,000 lamports per signature plus a priority fee that Ripple Custody estimates by simulating the transaction. As of October 1, 2026, no public source gives a like-for-like measurement of settlement time across XRPL, Stellar and Solana, and the same documentation gives no comparable cost figure for the XRP Ledger.
What we reason Analysis
- Settlement speed is not unique to XRPL. This follows from the MoneyGram pilot’s near-instant settlement on Stellar (SDF) set beside the under-four-second XRP pilot result (24/7 Wall St).
- A fast, cheap network does not by itself make its native token the asset that payments move in. This follows from the MoneyGram pilot moving payments via Stellar USDC (SDF) and from settlement in Ripple’s own stack running mainly in RLUSD (crypto.news, July 8, 2026).
- The feature on XRPL that ties XRP into trading by design is auto-bridging, not speed. This follows from XRPL.org’s auto-bridging documentation.
- Ripple’s case for integration is that one supplier covering custody, treasury, brokerage, stablecoins and a ledger cuts the number of systems an institution must run. This follows from Ripple’s own statements on Ripple Treasury (April 1, 2026) and Kbank (April 30, 2026), and from Ripple’s June 29, 2026 article on the XRPL Lending Protocol; whether that protocol is live on mainnet is not established in the project’s sources as of October 1, 2026, and no independent test of the saving exists in them.
- Integration can benefit Ripple and the ledger without benefiting XRP. This follows from crypto.news (July 8, 2026) on RLUSD settlement and Ripple Prime revenue, and CCN (August 20, 2026) on XRPL growth versus XRP as an investment.
What's still open
- As of October 1, 2026, no independent measurement of how much an integrated Ripple stack saves an institution was found in the project’s sources (searched: the H022 evidence pack, Ripple Treasury, Kbank and lending releases, crypto.news and 24/7 Wall St reports).
- Do Stellar or other ledgers route trades through their native asset the way XRPL auto-bridging does? As of October 1, 2026, public sources do not say.
- As of October 1, 2026, the sources checked do not establish this: The open list below records the missing like-for-like comparison of settlement time across XRPL, Stellar and Solana.
In plain English
Many payment networks are now fast and cheap, so speed on its own does not make XRP special. A MoneyGram pilot on the Stellar network, for example, moved money near-instantly using a dollar-linked token called USDC. What the XRP Ledger has is a built-in exchange that can pass trades through XRP when that is cheaper, and Ripple sells custody, treasury and brokerage services around it. Ripple says this saves institutions work, but no outside study of that saving was found. Reporters also point out that much of this business runs in Ripple’s dollar token, RLUSD, rather than in XRP.
