Plain definition. The XRP Ledger, or XRPL, is a decentralized public blockchain for creating, transferring and exchanging digital assets, built with a focus on compliance.

Technical definition. XRPL.org defines the XRP Ledger as “a decentralized public Layer 1 blockchain for creating, transferring, and exchanging digital assets with a focus on compliance.” It supports many kinds of assets, from stablecoins to tokenized real-world assets. Transactions settle in 3 to 5 seconds for a fee of about 0.000011 XRP, and its built-in trading infrastructure combines an order book with an automated market maker (AMM).
