Short answer
DeFi TVL is a poor measure of XRP liquidity. It counts only coins locked in ledger apps: DefiLlama showed $46.56 million on September 29, 2026, excluding order books, exchanges, futures, funds and bridged XRP. Better measures are order-book depth, XRP-backed loans, futures open interest and stablecoin turnover, and most of those are published only in part.
The full answer
TVL means total value locked: the value of coins deposited in DeFi apps on a blockchain. DefiLlama, which publishes TVL figures by chain, says TVL “is meant to be a proxy for the skin in the game / risk taken by depositors”.[1] It counts coins locked in contracts, not coins borrowed out, and “Borrows are tracked as a separate metric instead.”[1] It also states that “Bridge TVL is not attributed to any chain.”[1]
For the XRP Ledger, DefiLlama showed $46.56 million on September 29, 2026,[2] with about $41.6 million in its automated market maker (AMM) pools.[3] That figure counts deposits. How much XRP can change hands is a separate question, taken up below.
What does XRP Ledger TVL leave out?
Most of the places XRP trades. It leaves out:
- The ledger’s order book. DefiLlama’s XRP Ledger exchange entry counts AMM pools only,[3] so offers resting on the ledger’s order book are not in it.
- Exchanges. CoinGecko’s study, updated May 2026, found about $15 million of one-sided XRP liquidity within about 1% of price across eight exchanges.[14]
- Futures. The Crypto Basic reported on September 1, 2026, citing the data firm CoinGlass, that CME held about 387 million XRP of futures open interest.[15]
- Bridged XRP. FXRP, XRP moved to the Flare network, had about 145.2 million units minted on September 24, 2026, according to Flare.[19] Because DefiLlama does not attribute bridge balances to any chain,[1] XRP locked to back FXRP does not appear in XRP Ledger TVL (my reading of its rules).
TVL can also move the wrong way. On DefiLlama figures for the 30 days to September 29, 2026, each dollar in XRP Ledger AMM pools matched about $4.90 of trading, against about 28 for Uniswap V3 (my calculation).[3][4] Evernorth reported that XRP-paired AMM pools grew 26% over six quarters to Q2 2026 while trading through them fell 74%.[7]
Does XRP Ledger TVL have to reach $25 billion?
No source sets that target. For scale, DefiLlama showed Ethereum’s DeFi TVL at $53.596 billion and Solana’s at about $6.6 billion on September 29, 2026.[5][6] A payment bridge needs depth where currencies are exchanged, which can sit on exchanges and desks as well as in ledger apps. What payments would need is on how much XRP liquidity payments need.
For each undisclosed metric, who holds the data and what is the best dated proxy?
| Measure | Best public figure found | Who holds the full data |
|---|---|---|
| XRP-backed lending outstanding | Morpho FXRP/RLUSD market: $7.19 million borrowed of $7.9 million, September 29, 2026[8] | Lenders and Morpho (public); centralized lenders (private) |
| Native XRP Ledger lending | Not live: The Crypto Times reported on September 24, 2026 that the lending upgrades were still in validator voting and not active on mainnet[9] | XRP Ledger validators |
| Prime-broker XRP collateral | Not documented in the sources reviewed. Ripple said on November 3, 2025 that U.S. Ripple said in a November 3, 2025 release that U.S. Ripple Prime clients can trade OTC spot in XRP and RLUSD and cross-margin those spot holdings with other digital asset positions, including CME futures and options | Ripple Prime and other prime brokers |
| XRP/RLUSD depth | One pool about $4.6 million, mid-September 2026;[11] RLUSD/XRP pair about $900 million traded in six months to May 2026, according to Evernorth[12] | Ledger data (public, needs processing) |
| New stablecoin pairs | MXNB announced for the XRP Ledger on June 9, 2026;[13] no depth figure yet | Ledger data, Bitso |
| Exchange depth and slippage at $10-100 million | About $15 million of one-sided liquidity within about 1% across eight exchanges, study updated May 2026;[14] slippage not public | Paid data firms and exchanges |
| Market-maker borrowing rates for XRP | None found | Market makers, prime brokers, lenders |
| CME open interest | CME: about 387 million XRP of futures open interest, as reported by The Crypto Basic citing CoinGlass on September 1, 2026;[15] OTC open interest is not covered by the sources used here | CME (public) |
| Evernorth XRP actually deployed | Its August 2026 SEC filing expects at least 473,276,430 XRP at the merger’s closing;[17] plans to lend through the ledger’s lending protocol,[18] deployed amount not disclosed | Evernorth |
| RLUSD turnover | Average RLUSD balances $539 million in Q2 2026, according to Evernorth[7] | Ledger data, Ripple |
| FXRP in use | 130 million FXRP in DeFi, September 24, 2026, according to Flare[19] | Flare (public) |
How much credit sits on XRP is covered in more depth on measuring credit against XRP, and Evernorth’s plans on what Evernorth plans for its XRP. Which of these to follow over time is on what to watch instead of price.
Can the rows be added together?
No. Fund holdings, futures, FXRP and loans can refer to the same coins, or to hedges of each other. A fund’s XRP can be hedged with a short future. Flare reported on September 24, 2026 that about 145.2 million FXRP were minted with 130 million FXRP in DeFi,[19] so the backing XRP would be counted twice if both were added (my reasoning). The risk of counting the same XRP twice is on whether XRP holdings are double counted.
How would the next order of magnitude show up?
As larger numbers in the rows that are already public (our reasoning): exchange depth within 1% moving from about $15 million toward $150 million, lending markets holding hundreds of millions rather than single millions, and native ledger lending switching on and filling. Each can be checked with a date.
What is the case against a wider liquidity measure?
A wider matrix can flatter. Several rows have no public figure, and the rows that do are small: one lending market of $7.9 million,[8] one XRP/RLUSD pool of about $4.6 million,[11] and exchange depth that CoinGecko found below Solana’s within 2%.[14] Arguing that undisclosed capacity is large rests on data no one outside can check. The view that XRP’s value runs well ahead of what its ledger shows is on XRP valuation versus ledger activity, and how deep XRP markets are today is on how deep is XRP liquidity.
What we know
- Docs read September 29, 2026: DefiLlama counts only deposited coins as TVL, tracks borrows separately, and does not attribute bridge balances to any chain.
- September 29, 2026: DefiLlama showed $46.56 million of XRP Ledger DeFi TVL, about $41.6 million of it in AMM pools; Ethereum showed $53.596 billion and Solana about $6.6 billion.
- Six quarters to Q2 2026: Evernorth reported XRP-paired AMM pools grew 26% while trading through them fell 74%.
- September 29, 2026: Morpho’s FXRP/RLUSD market showed $7.19 million of RLUSD borrowed in a $7.9 million market.
- September 1, 2026: The Crypto Basic, citing CoinGlass, reported that CME held about 387 million XRP of futures open interest.
- Q2 2026: Evernorth reported average RLUSD balances of $539 million on the XRP Ledger.
- September 24, 2026: Flare reported about 145.2 million FXRP minted, 130 million of it in DeFi.
- June 9, 2026: Ripple announced that Bitso’s peso stablecoin MXNB will be issued on the XRP Ledger.
What we reason Analysis
- TVL can rise while use falls: Evernorth’s pool figures show more money in pools and less trading through them. This follows from Evernorth’s Q2 2026 report.
- The rows in the table below cannot be added up. ETF XRP, futures exposure and FXRP can refer to the same coins or to hedges of each other. This follows from DefiLlama’s own double-counting rules and the nature of each market.
- No source sets a $25 billion TVL target for the XRP Ledger. For scale, that is about half of Ethereum’s DeFi TVL on September 29, 2026 (our calculation from DefiLlama).
What's still open
- What collateral and haircuts does Ripple Prime apply to XRP? Ripple has not published them as of September 29, 2026.
- Market-maker XRP borrowing rates: no public series found as of September 29, 2026 (searched lender and prime-broker pages).
- How much of Evernorth’s XRP is deployed? It has not been disclosed as of September 29, 2026, and its lending plan depends on an XRP Ledger feature that is not yet switched on.
- What is the slippage on $10 million to $100 million XRP trades? No free public source gives it as of September 29, 2026.
In plain English
TVL is the money parked inside apps on a blockchain. For the XRP Ledger it was about $47 million at the end of September 2026, but it leaves out most places where XRP is bought, sold and borrowed. Exchange order books, futures, funds and loans each tell part of the story. Many of those numbers are private, so the full size of XRP liquidity cannot be read from public data today.
