Short answer
XRP’s native on-ledger liquidity is far too small for global settlement today. DefiLlama put total value locked in XRP Ledger DeFi at $44.92 million in September 2026, against an XRP market value of $93.942 billion. Exchange and futures markets trade far more, but no public source reports their combined depth or large-trade slippage.
The full answer
XRP liquidity sits in two very different places. On the XRP Ledger, the amounts are small and published daily. Off the ledger, on centralized exchanges, in futures and through brokers, the amounts are larger but reported in separate pieces, and no public source adds them into one depth figure.
How much liquidity sits on the XRP Ledger itself?
DefiLlama’s XRPL page showed $44.92 million of total value locked in DeFi in September 2026, with $40.09 million of that in the XRPL DEX [1]. The same page listed 24-hour DEX volume of $9.69 million, seven-day DEX volume of $57.99 million and an XRP market value of $93.942 billion [1]. Six months earlier the locked figure was a little higher. CoinDesk reported on March 13, 2026 that DefiLlama showed $47.54 million [2].
More pools have not meant more dollars. CoinDesk counted 27,000 AMM pools holding 12 million XRP in March 2026 and wrote that the dollar value of that liquidity remained thin relative to the scale of the token’s market [2]. The same article said XRP’s DeFi footprint and DEX volumes were small next to its $84 billion market value at the time [2]. The main dollar pair is covered separately in how deep XRP/RLUSD liquidity is on the XRPL DEX.
The ledger moves far more value than it holds in DeFi. 21shares reported that the XRP Ledger settled $159.9 billion in the first half of 2026, Analytics Insight wrote on September 15, 2026 [3]. Stablecoins on the ledger totalled $1.213 billion on DefiLlama in September 2026 [1].
CoinDesk reported in April 2026 that liquidity on Binance “has dropped sharply, leaving thinner order books”.[9] A figure from one study period can fall after it is published.
How long ledger liquidity would take to reach billions at recent growth is on XRP Ledger liquidity growth timelines.
How much larger is the off-ledger XRP market?
Trading volume away from the ledger runs at a different scale. Blockworks’ State of XRP report put second-quarter 2026 centralized exchange spot volume at $57.6 billion, down 54%, and perpetual futures volume at $154.9 billion, down 44%, CCN reported on August 20, 2026 [4]. DefiLlama’s XRPL page showed a “DEX vs CEX dominance” reading of 0.03% in September 2026 [1].
Regulated products add more. Global XRP exchange-traded products drew $253.6 million in net inflows in the second quarter of 2026, while their assets under management fell 17% to $1.99 billion as the price dropped, according to the same CCN report [4]. Coinbase’s page for its October 2026 XRP futures contract, sized at 500 XRP, showed open interest of $42.1 million and 24-hour volume of $14.83 million in September 2026 [5].
Brokers sit on top of that. crypto.news reported on July 8, 2026 that Ripple Prime clears more than $3 trillion in trades a year for over 300 institutional clients [6]. Ripple said on November 5, 2025 that Ripple Prime is expanding into collateralized lending for XRP and supporting a growing base of institutions trading XRP-based products [7]. That is the company’s own description of a business it was building, and Ripple gave no XRP lending figure.
CoinGecko’s 2025 exchange-liquidity report, updated May 4, 2026, found that XRP “has ~$15 million one-sided liquidity across the eight exchanges” within about 1% of price.[8] Bitget, Binance and Coinbase held close to two thirds (about 67%) of it.[8]
The report says XRP “has less cumulative liquidity on the eight exchanges at the +/- 2% depth level compared to SOL”, and that SOL “recorded almost 2x more volume” in the study period.[8] The figures for the other coins use different price bands, so only the Solana comparison is like for like:
Ripple said on May 5, 2025 that it would “sunset the report in its current form starting in Q2 2025”, referring to its XRP Markets Report.[10]
CoinDesk Research reported on October 17, 2025 that on October 10 more than $19 billion of borrowed-money positions were wiped out within 24 hours, and wrote that “as market makers withdrew bids, visible depth on major assets (FDV >$5B) evaporated”.[11] Capacity that exists on a normal day can leave when it is most needed.
How does XRP’s exchange order-book depth compare with bitcoin, ether and Solana?
The sources cited here give no like-for-like order-book benchmark for these four coins, such as depth within 1% or 2% of the mid price on the same exchanges. The nearest public comparison measures ledgers instead. CoinDesk wrote on March 13, 2026 that Solana carried roughly $4 billion in TVL and Ethereum over $40 billion, against $47.54 million on the XRP Ledger [2]. That gap describes on-chain DeFi, not the centralized exchange order books.
What is the slippage on $10 million to $100 million trades, by venue?
The sources cited here give no venue-by-venue slippage figures for XRP trades of $10 million to $100 million. Without those figures, public data cannot show whether an institutional-size block could be sold in an orderly way. Why depth decides whether a bridge asset works is covered in why liquidity depth matters for XRP as a bridge.
Does settlement on the ledger draw on XRP liquidity?
Much of it does not. crypto.news reported on July 8, 2026 that inside Ripple’s own products the asset doing the settlement work is predominantly RLUSD, Ripple’s dollar stablecoin, and that an asset able to move ten percent in a day is ruled out of the cash leg [6]. The same report said the fraction of Ripple Prime’s $3 trillion that becomes XRP demand is small enough that no serious estimate puts a meaningful number on it [6]. Analytics Insight wrote on September 15, 2026 that growing dollar liquidity can support settlement and trading without participants holding equivalent exposure to XRP’s price [3].
What is the strongest case that XRP liquidity is deeper than it looks?
The case rests on sequencing. Supporters argue that RLUSD adoption seeds the ledger with institutional liquidity that XRP-based collateral and bridging could later plug into. crypto.news called that answer coherent but described it as a claim about sequencing whose first half is observable and whose second half is not yet [6]. In crypto.news’s framing, the bridging and collateral role for XRP is the part that cannot yet be observed [6]. The off-ledger volumes above, and Ripple’s November 2025 statement on XRP lending at Ripple Prime [7], are the other evidence that the working market is wider than ledger TVL.
There is a counterpoint on the ledger’s own activity. A September 8 analysis from Bitquery attributed 93.2% of August transaction traffic to 793 accounts and described substantial automated order activity, Analytics Insight reported on September 15, 2026 [3]. The same article noted that institutions commonly automate trading, so automation alone does not invalidate the activity [3]. Which measures capture XRP liquidity better than TVL is taken up in what should be measured instead of DeFi TVL, and the role of dealer inventory in whether market makers need to own all the XRP liquidity they provide.

What we reason Analysis
- On DefiLlama’s September 2026 figures, XRP Ledger DeFi value of $44.92 million is about 0.05% of XRP’s $93.942 billion market value. With CoinDesk’s March 2026 description of thin AMM liquidity, that points to an on-ledger layer that cannot carry settlement at trillion-dollar scale today.
- The Blockworks volumes reported by CCN in August 2026 and Coinbase’s futures figures show an off-ledger market many times larger than the ledger’s DEX. Volume over a quarter or a day still measures what traded, not how much could be sold at once without moving the price, and neither source gives that number.
- DefiLlama’s September 2026 ‘DEX vs CEX dominance’ reading of 0.03%, set beside the Blockworks spot volume, indicates that XRP trading sits overwhelmingly on centralized venues. A view of liquidity built only on ledger TVL therefore understates the market XRP can draw on.
- crypto.news (July 2026) and Analytics Insight (September 2026) both describe dollar stablecoins doing the settlement work on the ledger. Deeper RLUSD liquidity therefore does not by itself mean deeper XRP liquidity.
- A rail that accepts a large order does not show that the order clears without slippage. The sources cited here give no slippage figures for large XRP trades, so the evidence on this page does not back the claim that XRP rails can absorb any amount.
- Large XRP positions can be built: Evernorth reported more than 473 million XRP purchased and committed by November 4, 2025. Evernorth gave an average purchase price but not how much its buying moved the market. This follows from Evernorth’s November 4, 2025 release.
- One day of global FX trading ($9.6 trillion, April 2025) is about 100 times XRP’s whole market value on September 29, 2026. Our calculation from BIS and CoinGecko figures.
What's still open
- As of October 1, 2026, no public source reports aggregate XRP depth across exchanges, OTC desks, prime brokers and derivatives venues.
- As of October 1, 2026, no public dataset gives venue-by-venue slippage for XRP trades of $10 million to $100 million.
- As of October 1, 2026, no public like-for-like benchmark compares centralized exchange order-book depth for XRP with bitcoin, ether and Solana.
- Whether RLUSD liquidity on the ledger will later support XRP-based bridging and collateral was, in crypto.news’s July 2026 words, a step not yet observable; no later public evidence settles it as of October 1, 2026.
- As of October 1, 2026, no public figure shows how much XRP-collateralized lending Ripple Prime has extended since Ripple said in November 2025 that it was expanding into it.
In plain English
Liquidity means how much of something can be bought or sold without the price jumping. On the XRP Ledger itself, only about $45 million sat in trading pools and similar tools in September 2026, which is small next to XRP’s total market value of about $94 billion. Far more XRP trades on ordinary exchanges and in futures markets, but nobody publishes a single figure for how much could be sold at once. So the evidence shows the ledger’s own pools are too small for settlement on a global scale, and the rest of the market is larger but hard to measure.
