Short answer
In the proposed model, lenders put XRP into ledger vaults, market makers borrow and hedge it, and a payment router passes through XRP while the sender holds only RLUSD. Ripple’s FAQ describes XRP and RLUSD being used in cross-border payments. Cointurk reported on September 13, 2026 that RippleX said institutional borrowing through XLS-65 and XLS-66 had not begun on mainnet.
The full answer
The model has five links. Holders lend XRP into vaults on the XRP Ledger, and market makers borrow it. The market makers hedge the price on CME, finance the rest through a prime broker, and quote XRP against stablecoins such as RLUSD or a peso coin. A payment router then passes a payment through XRP, while the company paying may only ever hold RLUSD. This is a proposed design. Cointurk (via Bitget, September 13, 2026) quoted RippleX’s Jazzi Cooper saying institutional borrowing through XLS-65 and XLS-66 had not yet begun on mainnet. Each link is checked below against what exists as of that date.
Which links in the chain exist today?
The lending link does not exist yet. XRPL.org describes the Lending Protocol as “fixed-term, uncollateralized loans using pooled funds from a Single Asset Vault.”[1] Underwriting is done off-chain, and the current design has no “automated on-chain collateral and liquidation management.”[1] At 18:24 UTC on September 29, 2026, 15 of 35 trusted validators backed the amendment; it needs 29.[2] An update in version 3.4.0, released September 16, 2026, adds closed-ended vaults and interest counted only “when payments are actually made.”[3] Ripple frames the protocol around two users: a payment provider that needs “liquidity now to fund outgoing payments,” and a market maker that wants to “finance inventory without selling assets.”[4] Evernorth said on January 29, 2026 that it intends to deposit XRP into the protocol’s Single-Asset Vaults and use it as “a core pillar of our digital asset strategy.”[5] The mechanics are on how the XRPL lending protocol works.
Hedging is in place. CME Group’s XRP futures come in contracts of 2,500 and 50,000 XRP[6] and began trading on May 18, 2025.[7] The financing link partly does: since November 3, 2025, Ripple says, Ripple Prime’s US clients can trade XRP over the counter and cross-margin it “with the rest of their digital asset portfolio, including OTC swaps and CME futures and options.”[8]
Quoting exists for RLUSD and is small. Validator operator Vet described bots on the XRP Ledger’s XRP/RLUSD pair that cancel and replace offers to adjust prices.[9] CryptoSlate put the XRP/RLUSD pool at about $4.6 million on September 12, 2026.[10] For pesos, Ripple said on June 9, 2026 that Bitso’s MXNB stablecoin “will be issued on the XRP Ledger” and that “Together with RLUSD” it will support settlement across the U.S.-Mexico corridor, and that it will be integrated into the ledger’s Permissioned DEX.[11] crypto.news (June 11, 2026) quoted validator operator Vet saying MXNB will trade alongside RLUSD on the network.[12] No cited source describes a live MXNB/RLUSD market pair, so whether an XRP/MXNB market exists is not established. More on the coin is on Ripple and Bitso’s MXNB stablecoin.
How could XRP be used in a payment where the company only holds RLUSD?
Through routing on the ledger. XRPL.org says any offer exchanging two tokens “could potentially use XRP as an intermediary currency in a synthetic order book.”[13] For payments, the default path uses the direct market between the two currencies, but “A single Payment transaction in the XRP Ledger can use multiple paths, combining liquidity from different sources.”[14] So a payer holding RLUSD can send, the receiver can get pesos, and XRP is used in between only if that route is cheaper. Ripple’s own page says Ripple Payments converts fiat into “a digital asset like XRP or a stablecoin like RLUSD.”[15] The XRP leg is an option, not a requirement, as set out on whether Ripple Payments requires XRP.
Who carries the credit risk when the customer pays later by invoice?
Ripple does, on its own description of the current product. Ripple’s Payments Direct documentation lists three funding methods. Under credit funding, “Ripple extends credit and sends an invoice after each payment is executed. Invoices are issued on the next business day.”[16] The customer pays after the payment has gone out, so until the invoice is settled Ripple is owed the money. The funding-methods page says the method “is established by Ripple during onboarding.”[16] A check of that page, the API reference and the payment lifecycle pages on September 29, 2026 found no price, interest rate or credit limit for credit funding.
An older version of the same idea used XRP directly. In October 2020 Ripple launched a Line of Credit that let payment firms using On-Demand Liquidity “purchase XRP from Ripple on credit,” paying “one fee on the amount borrowed.”[17] In the lending-protocol version, the risk would sit with the vault’s depositors, since loans are uncollateralized on-chain and judged off-chain.[1] What happens to such a loan if XRP falls mid-chain is on what happens to an XRP-backed loan when the price drops.
What is the biggest obstacle to using XRP for large institutional settlement?
On the evidence available, balance sheet matters more than speed. The ledger already settles in seconds; Ripple Treasury’s launch post advertises “3-5 second settlement using digital assets as bridge currency.”[18] The scarce input is credit. Hidden Road’s Michael Higgins told Finance Magnates in April 2025 that the firm had “20 times more demand for balance sheet than supply.”[19] KBRA said in July 2026 that Ripple Prime’s revenues “are sensitive to balance sheet size and interest rate dynamics.”[20] A big corridor would need market makers able to borrow, hedge and carry XRP inventory at scale, and lenders willing to fund them.
What is the case against?
Where institutional credit has appeared on the XRP Ledger (the fund backed by Ripple, Clearpool and Cicada Partners that Forkast reported on in August 2026), it lends RLUSD, not XRP. Forkast reported in August 2026 that a credit fund backed by Ripple, Clearpool and Cicada Partners uses XRP “exclusively for transaction fees and required minimum account balances rather than as a lent asset.”[21] RippleX’s Jazzi Cooper was reported in September 2026 as saying institutional borrowing through the new lending standards “has not yet begun” on mainnet.[22] Ripple Treasury’s own post also says it settles cross-border transfers “in RLUSD stablecoins,” with Ripple Prime repo backed by RLUSD collateral.[18] Those routes move value across borders without an XRP leg. Which parts of the wider XRP stack are live and which are waiting is on what in the XRP stack is live and what is waiting.
What we know
- XRPL.org describes the Lending Protocol as fixed-term, uncollateralized loans from a Single Asset Vault, with underwriting done off-chain and no automated on-chain collateral or liquidation.
- At 18:24 UTC on September 29, 2026, 15 of 35 trusted validators backed the Lending Protocol amendment, which needs 29 (xrpldashboard).
- Ripple (June 29, 2026) frames the protocol around payment providers that need liquidity between settlement windows and market makers that finance inventory; Evernorth (January 29, 2026) intends to lend XRP through it.
- CME XRP futures, in contracts of 2,500 and 50,000 XRP, began trading on May 18, 2025 (CME Group).
- Ripple Prime’s US clients have been able to trade XRP over the counter and cross-margin it with CME futures since November 3, 2025 (Ripple).
- CryptoSlate put the XRP Ledger’s XRP/RLUSD pool at about $4.6 million on September 12, 2026.
- Ripple said on June 9, 2026 that Bitso’s peso stablecoin MXNB ‘will be issued’ on the XRP Ledger and paired with RLUSD for U.S.-Mexico payments.
- XRPL.org says XRP can act as an intermediary between two tokens automatically, and one payment can combine several paths.
- Ripple’s Payments Direct documentation, checked September 29, 2026, lists credit funding, in which Ripple extends credit and invoices the next business day.
- Hidden Road’s Michael Higgins said in April 2025 the firm had ‘20 times more demand for balance sheet than supply’ (Finance Magnates).
What we reason Analysis
- A payer holding only RLUSD can send a payment that crosses XRP if the router finds an RLUSD-to-XRP-to-destination path cheaper than a direct one. This follows from XRPL.org’s auto-bridging and paths pages.
- Under credit funding, Ripple is the lender to its customer from execution until the invoice is paid, so Ripple carries that credit risk. Ripple’s documentation says: ‘Ripple extends credit and sends an invoice after each payment is executed.’
- For large corridors, the binding limit is how much financed balance sheet market makers can get, not how fast the ledger settles. This rests on Hidden Road’s balance-sheet statement and KBRA’s note that Ripple Prime’s revenue depends on balance sheet size.
What's still open
- Whether an XRP/MXNB market exists on the XRP Ledger: no source found showing one as of September 29, 2026; sources describe MXNB paired with RLUSD.
- The price, credit limit and loss record of Ripple’s credit funding: not found in its Payments Direct funding, API reference or payment lifecycle pages checked on September 29, 2026.
- No public source shows a payment that has run end to end on borrowed XRP as of September 29, 2026.
In plain English
Picture a company in the US paying a supplier in Mexico. The company holds digital dollars, the payment briefly becomes XRP, and the supplier receives pesos. The XRP in the middle could come from a trading firm that borrowed it from someone who owns XRP and wants interest on it. Cointurk (via Bitget, September 13, 2026) quoted RippleX’s Jazzi Cooper saying institutional borrowing through XLS-65 and XLS-66 had not yet begun on mainnet, and the proposals remained in XRPL governance and technical review as of that date.
