Short answer
No. Ripple’s product page, checked 29 September 2026, lists RLUSD, USDC, USDT and fiat as settlement options, so a bank can use Ripple Payments without XRP. The same page reports over $100 billion processed across 60+ markets, a Ripple figure with no stated period and no split showing how much used XRP.

What settlement options does Ripple Payments offer besides XRP?
Ripple’s cross-border payments page, as checked on 29 September 2026, describes Ripple Payments as a managed service for launching cross-border payments “settling in fiat or stablecoins” [1]. The same page says customers can pay in, pay out and settle in RLUSD, USDC, USDT or fiat, and that the settlement layer is decoupled from any single issuer’s token [1]. XRP is not in that list of settlement assets. The page also says the Ripple Group holds 75+ global licences, including a NYDFS Trust Company Charter [1].
Ripple’s 24 April 2026 post says its platform supports multiple stablecoins, including USDC, USDT and RLUSD, and processes settlement across stablecoins and fiat rails [3]. Ripple’s post says the platform settles across RLUSD, USDC, USDT and fiat “without requiring the bank to choose one”; that sentence does not name a specific bank, though the post elsewhere states that AMINA Bank was the first bank globally to support RLUSD [3]. It also says Ripple built its own stablecoin, RLUSD, but built the platform so that institutions do not have to use it [3].
Ripple’s 3 March 2026 release says the platform lets customers collect, hold, exchange and pay out in both fiat and stablecoins [2]. It names AMINA Bank as the first European bank to adopt Ripple Payments, lists alfred, AltPayNet, Banco Genial, CambioReal, Corpay, ECIB and MassPay as other customers, and says Corpay uses Ripple’s managed custody and liquidity management to fund and settle positions across Asia-Pacific with RLUSD [2].
Where does XRP still appear in Ripple Payments?
The FAQ on Ripple’s product page, as checked on 29 September 2026, says the sender’s bank or payment provider converts fiat into “a digital asset like XRP or a stablecoin like RLUSD”, moves the value over the XRP Ledger, and converts it back into local currency on the receiving end [1]. Ripple’s 5 November 2025 release described Ripple Payments, after the Rail acquisition, as a cross-border platform “using Ripple USD (RLUSD) and XRP”, and said RLUSD and XRP are leveraged across Ripple’s products [4].
One customer release shows XRP used on the customer side. In a Ripple release dated 2 December 2025, RedotPay said its users can send XRP or stablecoins and receive NGN within minutes through its Ripple Payments integration [5]. The release lists USDC, USDT, BTC, ETH, SOL, XRP and other assets as supported, and says RLUSD will be supported in the future [5]. The mechanics of the XRP bridge product are covered on How does Ripple’s On-Demand Liquidity (ODL) use XRP?.
Can a bank use Ripple Payments without holding XRP?
The settlement list on Ripple’s product page includes fiat, and a business can settle in fiat [1]. Reporting on Ripple’s bank network points the same way. 24/7 Wall St. reported on 1 April 2026 that using RippleNet “doesn’t automatically mean using XRP” and that banks can run it entirely in fiat [6]. The same article said only around 40% of RippleNet partners use On-Demand Liquidity, the product that requires XRP as a bridge asset [6]. The article also said Santander uses RippleNet’s messaging layer without touching XRP directly [6].
24/7 Wall St. framed a bank’s choice as whether the cost savings of using XRP as a bridge outweigh the compliance burden of holding a digital asset on its balance sheet [6]. Whether XRP must sit on a bank’s own books for the bridge to work at all is a separate question, covered on Do banks and businesses need to hold XRP for it to be used?.
How does the platform choose between XRP and other settlement assets?
Ripple’s 3 March 2026 release says its platform moves liquidity “to the right place, at the right time, and for the right price across assets” [2]. Its 24 April 2026 post says institutions work across several stablecoins because different corridors, counterparties and regulatory environments call for different assets [3]. Neither passage describes the rule that decides when a payment goes through XRP. The routing logic is covered on How does Ripple’s payment system decide whether to route a payment through XRP?, and whether XRP routing is running and winning is covered on Is XRP payment routing live, and has it proven it can win routes?.
Could Ripple Payments grow without using XRP?
Ripple’s reported totals have grown. Its 5 November 2025 release put total Ripple Payments volume above $95 billion [4], and its 3 March 2026 release said more than $100 billion [2]. Neither release splits the total by settlement asset.
The strongest critique comes from crypto.news. In an 8 July 2026 article on Ripple Prime, it concluded that inside Ripple’s own product stack the asset doing the settlement work is predominantly RLUSD, not XRP, because institutional settlement needs a stable, audited, dollar-denominated instrument [7]. The article said every institutional win that runs through RLUSD is a win for Ripple and for the ledger, and “only residually for the token” [7]. It also recorded the bull reply: RLUSD adoption seeds the ledger with institutional liquidity that XRP-based collateral and bridging could later plug into. crypto.news called that a claim about sequencing whose first half is observable and whose second half is not yet [7].
A larger Ripple Payments total does not show more XRP use while the total is not split by asset. What that gap means for XRP holders is covered on Does Ripple’s success mean XRP’s price goes up?, and the wider stablecoin question on Will RLUSD and other stablecoins replace XRP?.
What share of Ripple Payments volume uses XRP?
The two Ripple documents read for this page (the cross-border payments product page and the 5 November 2025 release) do not state that share, and no figure was found in them as of 29 September 2026 [1][2]. The evidence on that question is gathered on How much of Ripple’s payment volume actually uses XRP?.
What we know
- As checked on 29 September 2026, Ripple’s cross-border payments page says customers can pay in, pay out and settle in RLUSD, USDC, USDT or fiat, and that the settlement layer is decoupled from any single issuer’s token (Ripple).
- As checked on 29 September 2026, the FAQ on the same page says the sender’s bank or payment provider converts fiat into a digital asset like XRP or a stablecoin like RLUSD, which then moves over the XRP Ledger (Ripple).
- As checked on 29 September 2026, the same page says the network has processed over $100 billion in payments volume across 60+ markets, with no period stated (Ripple).
- On 3 March 2026 Ripple said Ripple Payments had more than $100 billion in processed volume and let customers collect, hold, exchange and pay out in fiat and stablecoins; it named Corpay as settling positions across Asia-Pacific with RLUSD (Ripple).
- On 24 April 2026 Ripple wrote that its platform supports USDC, USDT and RLUSD, settles across stablecoins and fiat rails, and was built so that institutions do not have to use RLUSD (Ripple).
- On 5 November 2025 Ripple described Ripple Payments after the Rail acquisition as a platform using RLUSD and XRP, and reported total volume above $95 billion (Ripple).
- On 2 December 2025 RedotPay said, in a Ripple release, that its users can send XRP or stablecoins through its Ripple Payments integration and receive NGN (Ripple release).
- On 1 April 2026 24/7 Wall St. reported that RippleNet can run entirely in fiat and that only around 40% of RippleNet partners use On-Demand Liquidity, the product that requires XRP (24/7 Wall St.).
- On 8 July 2026 crypto.news wrote that inside Ripple’s own product stack the asset doing the settlement work is predominantly RLUSD, not XRP (crypto.news).
What we reason Analysis
- Ripple Payments does not require XRP for settlement. This rests on Ripple’s product page listing RLUSD, USDC, USDT and fiat as settlement assets, and on Ripple’s April 24, 2026 statement that the platform settles across those assets without requiring the bank to choose one.
- No public source shows a rule forcing payments through XRP; XRP appears in Ripple’s descriptions as one possible asset. This rests on the product page FAQ naming ‘a digital asset like XRP or a stablecoin like RLUSD’ and on Ripple’s statement that it moves liquidity for the right price across assets.
- A bank whose policy bars it from holding crypto can still use Ripple Payments by settling in fiat. This rests on the fiat settlement option on Ripple’s product page and on 24/7 Wall St.'s April 1, 2026 framing of the compliance burden of holding a digital asset.
- Growth in Ripple Payments volume does not by itself show growth in XRP use, because Ripple’s reported totals ($95 billion in November 2025, more than $100 billion in March 2026) are not split by settlement asset. This rests on Ripple’s November 5, 2025 release and its March 3, 2026 release.
What's still open
- As of September 30, 2026, Ripple’s product page, its March 3, 2026 and November 5, 2025 releases, and its April 24, 2026 post do not state the share of Ripple Payments volume settled through XRP, and no public figure was found.
- As of September 30, 2026, no public source says whether Ripple earns more when a payment settles in RLUSD rather than XRP.
- As of September 30, 2026, Ripple’s product page gives no period for its over-$100 billion volume figure, and 24/7 Wall St. gives no date or source for its ‘around 40%’ On-Demand Liquidity figure.
In plain English
Ripple sells a payments service called Ripple Payments to banks and payment companies. Ripple’s own website says customers can settle payments in regular money or in digital tokens called stablecoins, such as RLUSD, USDC and USDT, so a bank does not have to use XRP. Ripple still describes XRP as one of the assets a payment can move through. Ripple’s documents don’t say how much of its payment volume uses XRP, so the growth of the service doesn’t show how much XRP is used.
