Short answer
No. Ripple’s 2026 materials describe a bank using Ripple Payments over stablecoin and fiat rails, and corporate treasurers holding XRP beside cash. The XRP holding found in public sources sits with collateral posters, fee payers and some senders. Market makers carrying XRP underneath bank payments is this site’s analysis; no public source documents it as of September 2026.

What do Ripple’s payment products ask a bank to hold?
Ripple’s April 24, 2026 post on its payments platform says the platform supports multiple stablecoins, including USDC, USDT and RLUSD, and processes cross-border settlement across multiple stablecoins and fiat rails [1]. The post argues that different corridors, counterparties and regulatory environments call for different assets. Of its own stablecoin, it says “the platform was built so that institutions do not have to use it” [1]. Ripple reported in the same post that its payments business runs cross-border payments across 60+ markets with $100B+ in volume [1].
The bank Ripple names is AMINA Bank. Ripple says AMINA became the first European bank to adopt Ripple Payments. It also says the platform settles across RLUSD, USDC, USDT and fiat “without requiring the bank to choose one” [1]. The passages of that post describe the bank’s flows in stablecoins and fiat. They do not describe XRP in those flows.
For companies, Ripple said on April 1, 2026 that Ripple Treasury shows XRP and RLUSD balances in the same account structure as cash [2]. Ripple built Ripple Treasury on GTreasury, which it acquired in 2025. Ripple says treasury teams can view, hold, receive and manage fiat and digital liquidity with “no need to navigate custody, wallets, or exchanges on their own” [2]. Ripple also said the framework “will soon expand to connecting with” its products for cross-border and intercompany settlement. That connection was announced on April 1, 2026, and the release did not describe it as live [2].
In Latin America, Ripple announced on June 9, 2026 that Bitso’s peso stablecoin, MXNB, will be issued on the XRP Ledger. Ripple said that together with RLUSD, MXNB will support settlement for enterprise cross-border payments across the U.S.–Mexico corridor, and that it will be integrated into the ledger’s Permissioned DEX [3]. This is a plan. Silvio Pegado, Ripple’s Managing Director of LATAM, described RLUSD and MXNB on the Permissioned DEX as regulated on-chain liquidity for enterprise payments between dollars and pesos [3].
Where is XRP actually held today?
The public sources show XRP held in three places.
Collateral. Bitnomial is a U.S. derivatives exchange company. Benzinga reported that Higgins described Ripple’s dollar-backed stablecoin RLUSD as becoming part of Ripple Prime’s settlement and collateral strategy, allowing institutions to meet margin calls outside banking hours [9]. Bitnomial named market makers among the firms that can now deploy their digital asset portfolios more efficiently. It called the step “a natural extension of our partnership with Ripple” and said acceptance is subject to all applicable regulatory approvals [4]. Separately, crypto.news reported on July 8, 2026 that Ripple Prime accepts XRP as collateral for margin and settlement within its own brokerage. The publication described that arrangement as Ripple’s own brokerage accepting Ripple’s own asset [5].
Ledger fees. crypto.news reported on July 8, 2026 that every transaction on the XRP Ledger burns a small amount of XRP as a fee. It put total fee burn since 2012 at roughly 14 million XRP, against a 100 billion token supply [5]. Ripple said on April 8, 2025 that Hidden Road would migrate its post-trade activity across the XRP Ledger and would use RLUSD for cross-margining [6]. At announcement on April 8, 2025, Ripple said Hidden Road would migrate its post-trade activity across XRPL to streamline operations and lower costs (Ripple press release); this was a stated plan.
Senders. RedotPay and Ripple announced on December 2, 2025 a feature built on Ripple Payments. In a typical transaction, a user sends XRP or another supported asset from RedotPay, and naira are sent to a local bank account [7]. RLUSD support was listed for the future [7]. In this flow the sender holds the crypto, and the receiving bank account gets naira.
Who would hold the XRP if banks do not?
One possible model has specialised market makers and liquidity providers hold XRP and supply the XRP leg of a payment, while banks and businesses buy the payment service and see only stablecoins or fiat. The evidence does not test it directly; the nearest piece is Ripple’s statement at the April 2025 Hidden Road announcement that Hidden Road would migrate its post-trade activity across XRPL to streamline operations and lower costs. As of September 30, 2026, no public source documents a named market maker supplying XRP for a bank’s cross-border payment, so the joined flow is a hypothesis.
The mechanics of Ripple’s older XRP payment product are on how ODL uses XRP. Why a firm would carry XRP inventory is covered on why market makers hold XRP. Whether a firm has to own that inventory outright is covered on whether market makers need to own all the XRP they provide. A worked example is set out on how borrowed XRP could support a cross-border payment.
Does hidden use still create demand for XRP?
crypto.news reported on July 8, 2026 that Ripple Prime clears more than $3 trillion in trades a year for over 300 institutional clients [5]. The publication then traced how that volume could reach XRP. It found that fee burn is negligible, that collateral is real but largely internal, and that settlement flows to the stablecoin. It called the present-day result “a sliver” and said no serious estimate puts a meaningful number on it [5]. The same article reported that the tokenized-Treasury settlement Ripple ran with JPMorgan, Mastercard and Ondo on the XRP Ledger used RLUSD to carry the money. It argued that an asset able to move ten percent in a day is disqualified from the cash leg [5]. It also noted that XRP holders receive no mechanical claim on Ripple’s businesses [5].
How much XRP is held rather than passed through, and what that means for tradable supply, is covered on how much XRP is available.
What is the strongest case against this view?
crypto.news’s July 25, 2026 audit put Ripple’s 2023–2025 acquisition spending at roughly $4 billion, across Metaco, Standard Custody, Hidden Road, Rail, GTreasury and Palisade [8]. The audit reviewed each acquired business. It found RLUSD, not XRP, doing the new collateral work in prime brokerage. It found corporate treasury running on fiat and Rail running on stablecoins. It concluded that Ripple has built a path to institutional success that does not require XRP demand [8]. The audit set out two readings. The generous one is optionality. The ungenerous one is that Ripple spent three years and $4 billion reducing its dependence on XRP. The audit said it cannot resolve which reading wins [8].
Benzinga reported on June 24, 2026 that Ripple Prime CEO Mike Higgins said RLUSD is becoming part of the firm’s settlement and collateral strategy. Higgins also said “Stablecoins are the lead-in”, according to Benzinga’s June 2026 report [9]. crypto.news wrote on July 8, 2026 that skeptics deny that infrastructure owned by the token’s issuer, absent third-party adoption, amounts to token demand. The publication added that “on the evidence to date they have been right” [5].
The case that stablecoin pairs could route around XRP even on its own ledger is set out on whether direct stablecoin pairs could make XRP unnecessary. The wider question is on whether RLUSD and other stablecoins will replace XRP.
What would show XRP working underneath at scale?
crypto.news named checkable signals on July 8, 2026. The first is a brokerage or clearing venue that Ripple does not own announcing that it accepts XRP as margin collateral. Another is Hidden Road’s post-trade migration becoming visible on-chain [5]. The article also described the bulls’ answer: RLUSD adoption seeds the ledger with institutional liquidity that XRP collateral and bridging could later plug into. It called that a claim about sequencing whose first half is observable and whose second half is not yet [5].
Bitnomial’s November 2025 announcement [4] resembles the first signal, with three limits. Bitnomial calls it an extension of its partnership with Ripple. Acceptance is subject to regulatory approvals. No public source states whether Ripple owns any part of Bitnomial.
The range of roles XRP could take beyond payments is covered on what kinds of capital and roles form around XRP. Whether XRP must displace ordinary money for any of this to matter is the next question, on whether XRP needs to replace money.

What we reason Analysis
- Banks can use Ripple Payments without holding XRP. This follows from Ripple’s April 24, 2026 description of settlement across USDC, USDT, RLUSD and fiat, and its AMINA Bank example.
- The XRP holding recorded in this project’s sources sits with derivatives traders and market makers posting margin, with ledger fee payers, and with senders on a consumer app. This follows from Bitnomial (November 3, 2025), crypto.news (July 8, 2026) and RedotPay and Ripple (December 2, 2025).
- A model where market makers and liquidity providers hold XRP underneath while banks buy only the payment service fits these separate pieces, but no source joins them into one working flow.
- Bitnomial’s November 2025 announcement resembles the third-party collateral signal crypto.news named in July 2026, limited by Bitnomial calling it an extension of its Ripple partnership and by the regulatory-approval condition. This rests on Bitnomial (November 3, 2025) and crypto.news (July 8, 2026).

In plain English
A bank that sends money abroad through Ripple’s system does not have to own XRP; Ripple’s own 2026 materials describe a bank settling in stablecoins, which are dollar-linked tokens, or in ordinary money. The XRP that does get held sits with traders who post it as security for their trades, with people who send it through an app, and in very small fees paid to use the XRP Ledger. The idea that specialist trading firms hold XRP behind the scenes for banks is this site’s reasoning, and no public source shows it happening yet. Critics point out that Ripple’s newer businesses run mainly on ordinary money and Ripple’s dollar token, RLUSD, rather than on XRP.
