Short answer
No evidence held by this site as of September 30, 2026 shows XRP running out. Escrow still held around 32 billion XRP in September 2026 (Finbold), and spot XRP ETFs held 1.8% of XRP’s market value (KuCoin, September 28, 2026).
The full answer
Can XRP run out?
Nothing in the public sources points to XRP running out. Finbold reported in September 2026 that roughly one-third of XRP’s fixed maximum supply of 100 billion tokens remains locked in escrow, and that re-escrow transactions pushed the escrow balance back to around 32 billion XRP [1]. The XRP Ledger enforces the timing of each release, so escrowed tokens cannot be accessed before their scheduled unlock date [1]. KuCoin reported on September 13, 2026 that Ripple originally placed 55 billion XRP into escrow [2]. The page on how the XRP escrow works and what happens when it runs out covers the schedule.
Binance.US states that circulating supply counts only the XRP already released and available to trade, and puts it at 63.09 billion XRP of the 100 billion created at the 2012 launch, with the rest still locked; I could not find a measure of how much of that circulating XRP is free to trade as of October 2, 2026.
Supply outside escrow is still growing. Finbold reported in September 2026 that, because Ripple relocks most newly unlocked tokens, the increase in potentially circulating XRP has generally averaged 200 million to 300 million XRP per month rather than the full 1 billion released [1]. The same report said recent unlocks have not triggered sustained selling pressure [1].
Taking Finbold’s roughly 32 billion in escrow from the 100 billion maximum leaves around 68 billion XRP outside escrow. The 68 billion includes XRP in Ripple’s own non-escrow wallets, which XRP Insights put at about 4.74 billion XRP on October 3, 2026 [22]. A “supply shock” would need buyers to absorb that pool faster than new XRP arrives; the documented holdings below do not show that.
How much XRP do ETFs, treasuries and wrapped tokens hold?
The Bitwise XRP ETF’s Form 10-Q reports a net closing balance of 286,838,445.9126 XRP on June 30, 2026 [4]. The Canary XRP ETF’s Form 10-Q reports 231,279,303 XRP on the same date [5]. Across all spot XRP ETFs, KuCoin reported on September 28, 2026 net assets of $1.77 billion, an ETF net asset ratio of 1.8% of XRP’s total market cap, and cumulative net inflows of $1.79 billion [3].
Evernorth, a company built to hold XRP, said on November 4, 2025 that its XRP purchased and committed exceeded 473,276,430 XRP [6]. Flare reported on September 24, 2026 about 145.2 million FXRP minted, with 130 million FXRP in DeFi [9]. Flare describes FXRP as a 1:1 representation of XRP, minted only after its data protocols verify the payment on the XRP Ledger, and says the backing XRP stays on the XRP Ledger [9].
Bitwise and Canary together held about 518.1 million XRP on June 30, 2026, about 0.76% of the roughly 68 billion outside escrow. Adding Evernorth’s November 2025 total and Flare’s September 2026 FXRP figure gives about 1.14 billion XRP across these named holders, about 1.7% of the XRP outside escrow, or roughly four to six months of net escrow additions at Finbold’s reported rate. The dates differ, and the sources do not show whether any of these holders overlap. A fuller breakdown is on the page about how much XRP institutions hold and put to work.
Is held XRP taken off the market for good?
Not in the structures documented here. The Bitwise trust can create and redeem shares in-kind for XRP or for cash [4]. In the quarter to June 30, 2026 it added about 105.3 million XRP from share creations, while about 13.2 million XRP left the trust for redemptions [4]. Canary describes its trust as a passive vehicle that does not seek returns beyond tracking the XRP price [5].
Evernorth said in October 2025 that, unlike a passive ETF, it seeks to grow XRP per share through institutional lending, liquidity provisioning and DeFi yield [7]. CoinDesk reported in March 2026 that Evernorth’s S-4 filing says it expects to lend XRP, provide automated market-maker liquidity and run options strategies such as covered calls and cash-secured puts [8].
Wrapped XRP also moves both ways. By Flare’s own figures, FXRP minted fell from more than 155 million in late April 2026 to 145.2 million on September 24, 2026, and FXRP in DeFi fell from 144 million in July to 130 million [9]. Flare says FXRP is lent, borrowed and posted as collateral [9], and reported 10.6 million FXRP posted as collateral in Sentora’s RLUSD market on Morpho on September 24, 2026 [9].
Ripple said on November 5, 2025 that Ripple Prime was expanding into collateralized lending for XRP [10]. ICObench wrote in May 2026 that under Ripple Prime’s model a firm can pledge an XRP position as collateral and receive financing against it without selling [11], and that the same XRP collateral can support positions across several product types within one risk system [11]. Because one XRP can sit behind several positions, adding up uses risks counting it twice; the page on whether ETF, treasury, DeFi and derivatives XRP can be added together covers this.
Holding and mobilizing happen at the same time. Funds and treasuries take XRP out of open markets, while redemptions, unwrapping and collateral lending put it back to work. No public source measures which effect is larger.
How much XRP sits on exchanges, and is it falling?
XRP Insights reported on September 26, 2026 that publicly attributed exchange wallets held 21.14 billion XRP, a net drop of 625.9 million XRP across tracked wallets that week. It called this a verified floor, since only attributable wallets are counted, and says some exchanges may have additional unlabeled wallets not included [22].
What is the strongest case that XRP is getting scarcer?
The case rests on steady accumulation by regulated holders. KuCoin reported cumulative spot ETF net inflows of $1.79 billion as of September 28, 2026 [3]. Bitwise’s trust took in about 105.3 million XRP in one quarter against about 13.2 million redeemed [4]. Evernorth said on November 4, 2025 that its total XRP purchased and committed exceeded 473,276,430 XRP since it announced its business combination with Armada II [6]. ICObench reported that Ripple Prime reportedly accepts XRP alongside US Treasuries, fiat, gold, Bitcoin and BlackRock money market funds as eligible collateral, and that a $200 million revolving facility with Neuberger Specialty Finance provides the balance sheet capacity to fund client positions backed by that collateral pool. The article cites a statement by Ripple Prime CEO Mike Higgins on May 12, 2026. The same source wrote that available data could not confirm whether the facility had been drawn in material size [11].
The evidence also has limits. Finbold reported that recent escrow unlocks have not triggered sustained selling pressure [1], and the net monthly addition of 200 million to 300 million XRP continues [1]. The fuller argument for scarcity is on the page asking whether XRP ETF purchases make XRP scarcer.
What data would allow an honest float estimate, and who holds it?
An estimate would need a dated balance for each place XRP can sit, measured on the same day. Some of these are public. ETF sponsors report holdings in quarterly SEC filings, as Bitwise and Canary do [4][5], though with a lag of weeks. Flare publishes FXRP minted and deployed [9]. Evernorth reports through SEC filings [6]. The escrow balance is recorded on the XRP Ledger and reported by outlets such as Finbold [1].
Exchange balances are public only for wallets XRP Insights can attribute, and XRP Insights publishes Ripple’s operational-wallet balance [22]. Other inputs are not public: market-maker inventory, and how much of each holder’s XRP is lent or pledged at a given time. Without those, and without a way to remove overlaps, any float percentage would be invented. I state no float percentage here.
What we know
- Finbold reported in September 2026 that roughly one-third of XRP’s fixed maximum supply of 100 billion remains locked in escrow, with the balance back to around 32 billion XRP after re-escrow transactions.
- Finbold reported in September 2026 that the increase in potentially circulating XRP has generally averaged 200 million to 300 million XRP per month, not the full 1 billion released from escrow each month.
- KuCoin reported on September 28, 2026 that spot XRP ETFs held $1.77 billion in net assets, an ETF net asset ratio of 1.8% of XRP’s total market cap, with cumulative net inflows of $1.79 billion.
- Bitwise XRP ETF held 286,838,445.9126 XRP and Canary XRP ETF held 231,279,303 XRP on June 30, 2026, according to their Form 10-Q filings.
- Evernorth said on November 4, 2025 that its XRP purchased and committed exceeded 473,276,430 XRP.
- Flare reported on September 24, 2026 about 145.2 million FXRP minted, with 130 million FXRP in DeFi.
- Ripple said on November 5, 2025 that Ripple Prime was expanding into collateralized lending for XRP.
- XRP Insights reported on September 26, 2026 that publicly attributed exchange wallets held 21.14 billion XRP, a net drop of 625.9 million XRP across tracked wallets that week, and called the total a verified floor because only attributable wallets are counted.
- XRP Insights reported that on October 3, 2026 Ripple held approximately 36.42 billion XRP: 31.68 billion XRP locked in escrow plus 4.74 billion XRP in operational wallets.
What we reason Analysis
- Around 68 billion XRP sits outside escrow (100 billion minus the roughly 32 billion Finbold reported for September 2026). The 68 billion still includes XRP in Ripple’s own non-escrow wallets, which XRP Insights put at about 4.74 billion XRP on October 3, 2026.
- The XRP held by Bitwise and Canary on June 30, 2026 (about 518.1 million combined, from their 10-Qs) is about 0.76% of the roughly 68 billion outside escrow.
- Adding Evernorth’s purchased and committed total (November 2025) and Flare’s FXRP minted (September 2026) gives about 1.14 billion XRP across named, documented holders, about 1.7% of the XRP outside escrow. The dates differ, and the sources give no way to check overlaps between these holders.
- About 1.14 billion XRP equals roughly four to six months of net escrow additions at the 200 million to 300 million per month Finbold reported.
- ETF share redemptions, FXRP redemptions and collateral lending all return XRP to use, so documented holdings are not a one-way removal from the market. This draws on the Bitwise 10-Q, Flare’s figures and ICObench’s May 2026 description of Ripple Prime.
What's still open
- As of September 30, 2026, no source measures a free-float or bridge-available share of XRP. This site states no float percentage.
- ICObench wrote in May 2026 that available data could not confirm whether Ripple Prime’s $200 million Neuberger facility had been drawn in material size.
- Ripple reported that, as of June 30, 2026, 62,329,587,596 XRP had been distributed and 32,600,000,000 XRP was in escrow, but I could not find any measure of how much circulating XRP is free to trade as of October 2, 2026.
In plain English
No evidence held by this site as of September 30, 2026 shows XRP running out. Finbold reported that around 32 billion XRP was back in escrow after subsequent re-escrow transactions, and that the increase in potentially circulating XRP has generally averaged between 200 million and 300 million tokens per month, rather than the full 1 billion XRP released from escrow. Funds, a treasury company and wrapped-token systems hold XRP, but the amounts they report add up to a small part of what is outside escrow. Much of that held XRP can come back into use, through fund redemptions, unwrapping or lending. This site states no float percentage.
