Do XRP ETF purchases make XRP scarcer?
Also asked as: “Did (or will) the spot ETFs push XRP's price up?” · “How do ETF purchases affect XRP's available supply?” · “What happens to XRP locked in ETFs?”

Short answer
Yes, but only while the shares stay outstanding. Spot XRP ETFs keep XRP with custodians and sell it to meet redemptions, so buying moves XRP out of the tradable float. XRP Insights counted 1.16 billion XRP in US spot ETFs and index funds on 26 September 2026, out of a fixed supply of 100 billion.
The full answer
How much XRP do the US spot ETFs hold?
XRP Insights, a tracker that reads holdings from each issuer’s own website, counted 1.16 billion XRP in US spot ETFs and index funds on 26 September 2026, with $1.76 billion in combined assets [1]. The same report put Ripple’s on-ledger escrow at 31.98 billion XRP, 32.0% of the fixed 100 billion supply, with a further 4.74 billion XRP in operational wallets [1]. MarsBit, citing SoSoValue data, reported on 28 September 2026 that spot XRP ETF net assets stood at $1.77 billion, 1.8% of XRP’s total market value [2]. MarsBit, citing SoSoValue data, also reported that XRP spot ETFs recorded a net inflow of $75.59 million for the week of September 21 to 25, 2026 (EDT), led by the Bitwise XRP ETF with $58.99 million and the Franklin Templeton XRPZ ETF with $16.60 million, and that cumulative historical net inflows reached $1.79 billion.
Earlier counts covered different sets of funds, so they are not a clean time series. CryptoSlate, summarising SEC filings, reported that five spot funds held roughly 906.8 million XRP on 30 June 2026 [3]. PrimeXBT, covering August 2026, put seven US spot funds at about 992.5 million XRP, just under 1% of total supply [4]. The page on how much XRP the US spot ETFs hold follows these counts fund by fund.
By my arithmetic, 1.16 billion XRP is about 1.2% of the 100 billion supply, about 1.7% of the 68.02 billion held outside escrow, and about 1.8% of the 63.28 billion outside escrow and operational wallets. The shares are calculated from the XRP Insights figures [1]. Which denominator counts as float is its own question, taken up in how much XRP is actually available to trade.
How does XRP get into an ETF, and can it come back out?
CryptoSlate notes that creations and redemptions happen between the funds and authorized participants in the primary market [3].
Redemptions move XRP back out of the funds. The 21Shares XRP ETF’s filing shows it began 2026 with 135,559,073.5 XRP, sold 41,458,741.0 XRP for redemptions during the first half, and held 108,256,464.1 XRP on 30 June 2026 [6]. The Grayscale XRP Trust ETF’s filing shows 122,230,386 XRP on 31 December 2025 and 55,035,728 XRP on 30 June 2026 [7]. Across the five funds CryptoSlate tracked, first-half creations were about $629.9 million against $309.1 million of redemptions [3]. The mechanics are set out in how XRP ETF creations and redemptions work.
Shareholders do not take XRP off the ledger themselves. Bitcoin.com, reporting on 13F data on 5 September 2026, noted that an ETF provides indirect exposure through exchange-traded shares without transferring ownership of the underlying cryptocurrency to each shareholder, and that 13F filings cover ETF shares rather than tokens held directly [8]. The page on who owns XRP ETFs covers what those filings show.
How does ETF buying compare with escrow releases and exchange balances?
XRP Insights reported that ETF and index fund holdings rose by 34.0 million XRP in the week from 18 to 26 September 2026 [1]. The same report said the next escrow unlock window opens on 1 October 2026 for up to 1 billion XRP, with unused amounts historically re-locked [1]. PrimeXBT reported that Ripple re-locks most of each monthly release and that roughly 300 million XRP enter circulation each month [4].
300 million a month is about 70 million a week, so the 34.0 million XRP net ETF addition in the week to 26 September 2026 was roughly half of the escrow figure PrimeXBT gives. One week of flows is not a rate.
Flows have varied widely. PrimeXBT, citing 24/7 Wall St., reported $666.61 million of ETF inflows in November 2025 and $1.01 million in August 2026 [4]. Evernorth’s quarterly XRP Ledger report, citing SoSoValue, said US spot XRP ETFs took in $273 million in the second quarter of 2026, with net inflows in all three months [9].
XRP Insights counted 21.14 billion XRP in publicly attributed exchange wallets on 26 September 2026, a net change of minus 625.9 million XRP over the week, and describes the count as a floor because only attributable wallets are included [1]. As of 30 September 2026, no public source ties that exchange outflow to ETF purchases. The page on whether XRP whales are accumulating looks at exchange balances separately.
Why has the supply squeeze not shown up in the price?
PrimeXBT reported that XRP traded between $1.02 and $1.12 through August 2026 while seven US spot funds held about 992.5 million tokens [4]. PrimeXBT offered one possible reason: if issuers source XRP from over-the-counter desks or large holders rather than spot exchanges, the buying would not show up as market pressure [4]. As of 30 September 2026, no public source shows how much ETF-bought XRP came from which channel. In January 2026, FXStreet reported analyst warnings that ETF inflows and sentiment do not guarantee sustained price appreciation [10]. The price question has its own page, did the spot ETFs push XRP’s price up.
Does shrinking float help or hurt XRP’s use as a bridge asset?
Evernorth reported that trading on the XRP Ledger’s decentralized exchange ran at 4.42 million XRP per day in the second quarter of 2026, up about 20% year on year [9]. Evernorth counts that volume as turnover rather than accumulation [9].
Bridge use depends on XRP that trades. The Canary filing passages cited above describe custodians safekeeping the trust’s XRP and sales for expenses or redemptions; none describes lending, pledging or settlement use [5]. On that reading, ETF growth adds scarcity but no settlement capacity. Whether a smaller float helps or hurts bridge liquidity depends on how much XRP liquidity providers keep on order books and in pools, and no public source measures that as of 30 September 2026. The page on whether ETF-held XRP sits idle covers what the funds do with their holdings.
What would larger ETF holdings mean for float?
As a hypothetical, not a forecast: if ETFs held 2%, 5% or 10% of the 100 billion supply, that would be 2, 5 or 10 billion XRP. Against the 1.16 billion counted on 26 September 2026 [1], that is about 1.7, 4.3 or 8.6 times the current holding. Against the 63.28 billion outside escrow and operational wallets, it is about 3.2%, 7.9% or 15.8%. Under the fund structure shown in the filings, that XRP would stay in custody until shares are redeemed or XRP is sold for expenses [5], so the effect would be scarcity rather than more XRP put to work.

What we reason Analysis
- ETF and index fund holdings of 1.16 billion XRP on 26 September 2026 equal about 1.2% of the 100 billion supply, about 1.7% of the 68.02 billion outside escrow, and about 1.8% of the 63.28 billion outside escrow and operational wallets. This follows from XRP Insights’ 26 September 2026 holdings, escrow and operational wallet figures.
- PrimeXBT’s figure of roughly 300 million XRP a month entering circulation from escrow is about 70 million a week; the 34.0 million XRP net ETF addition in the week to 26 September 2026 was roughly half of that. One week is not a trend. This follows from XRP Insights and PrimeXBT figures.
- ETF buying is a scarcity effect, not a productivity effect: the Canary filing passages cited here describe safekeeping and sales for expenses or redemptions, and none describes lending, pledging or settlement use. This follows from the Canary XRP ETF 10-Q.
- The scarcity is reversible: 21Shares’ XRP holdings fell about 20% and Grayscale’s about 55% between 31 December 2025 and 30 June 2026 as shares were redeemed. This follows from the two funds’ 10-Q balances.
- Hypothetical only: ETFs holding 2%, 5% or 10% of the 100 billion supply would mean 2, 5 or 10 billion XRP, about 1.7, 4.3 or 8.6 times the 26 September 2026 count, or about 3.2%, 7.9% or 15.8% of the 63.28 billion outside escrow and operational wallets. This is not a forecast. This follows from XRP Insights’ 26 September 2026 figures.
What's still open
- As of 30 September 2026, no public source shows how much ETF-bought XRP came from exchanges rather than over-the-counter desks or large holders. Searched:
- As of 30 September 2026, no public source measures whether XRP held by ETFs has reduced liquidity available for payments or bridge trades on the XRP Ledger. Searched: the pack’s fund filings, trackers and Evernorth’s Q2 2026 report.
- As of 30 September 2026, no public source links the 625.9 million XRP weekly drop in attributed exchange wallets to ETF purchases.
In plain English
When someone buys shares in a spot XRP fund, the fund holds real XRP with a custodian. That takes some XRP out of the supply that trades, about 1.16 billion out of 100 billion in late September 2026. The XRP can come back when shares are redeemed, and Ripple’s escrow adds XRP to circulation each month. PrimeXBT reports that seven US spot funds now hold close to a billion XRP, while XRP traded in a narrow range through August 2026.
