Short answer
Canadian XRP ETFs are bought through a brokerage account, CryptoNewsDaily.ca reported; it says three launched on the TSX in June 2025 and are available inside TFSAs and RRSPs. An XRP trust’s 10-Q for the period ended 30 June 2026 says its shares are listed and trade on an exchange.

How does a person buy shares in an XRP ETF?
XRP Insights, a tracking site, wrote on 30 September 2026 that XRP ETFs let people gain exposure to XRP through an existing brokerage account, without managing private keys or cryptocurrency wallets [1].
The funds do not sell shares to individuals directly. Canary XRP ETF’s quarterly report for the period to 30 June 2026 says its shares are listed and trade on an exchange, that certain financial firms are authorized to purchase or redeem shares, and that it creates and redeems in blocks of 10,000 shares [2]. Franklin XRP Trust’s report for the same quarter says it issues and redeems shares only to eligible financial institutions called authorized participants, in blocks of 50,000 shares [3]. CryptoSlate described this step on 1 September 2026 as a mechanism distinct from retail investors directly depositing or withdrawing cash [5]. The way authorized participants move XRP into and out of the funds is set out in how XRP ETF creations and redemptions work.
Where are the US spot XRP ETFs listed?
XRP Insights counted six US spot XRP ETFs holding XRP directly as of July 2026: Canary Capital (XRPC), Bitwise (XRP), Franklin Templeton (XRPZ), Grayscale (GXRP), 21Shares (TOXR) and REX-Osprey (XRPR) [1]. It dates the first, REX-Osprey’s XRPR on the Cboe BZX Exchange, to 18 September 2025, followed by Canary’s XRPC on 12 November 2025, the Grayscale, Bitwise and Franklin funds on 24 November 2025, and 21Shares’ TOXR on 11 December 2025 [1]. Franklin’s filing names NYSE Arca as the exchange for XRPZ shares [3].
XRP Insights also notes that futures-based XRP ETFs, such as Volatility Shares’ XRPI, are a separate category and do not hold spot XRP [1]. Its 30 September 2026 comparison puts annual ETF fees between 0.19% and 0.75%, and its two fee tables give different figures for some funds [1]. Fund-by-fund fees are on which XRP ETFs exist and what they charge.
How do Canadians buy the XRP ETFs listed on the TSX?
CryptoNewsDaily.ca reported on 5 April 2026 that Purpose Investments, Evolve Funds and 3iQ launched spot XRP ETFs on the Toronto Stock Exchange in June 2025, after the OSC approved the products that month, with Purpose’s fund launching on 18 June 2025 under the tickers XRPP, XRPP.B and XRPP.U [4]. The guide says all three are physically backed and hold actual XRP, not derivatives [4].
The same guide says major Canadian brokerages support TSX-listed ETFs, and describes buying as searching for XRPP, XRP or XRPQ, choosing a version (hedged or unhedged, CAD or USD) and placing the order [4]. It put all three funds’ fees broadly between 0.69% and 0.75% after 3iQ’s fee holiday ended [4]. XRP is also the ticker of Bitwise’s US fund in XRP Insights’ list [1], so the exchange shown beside a ticker decides which fund an order buys.
Can an XRP ETF be held in a retirement account?
In its 30 September 2026 guide, XRP Insights lists holding in an IRA or 401(k) as a feature of XRP ETFs and “No IRA benefits” as a drawback of holding XRP directly, and calls the ability to hold the funds in tax-advantaged retirement accounts one of their biggest advantages [1]. For Canada, CryptoNewsDaily.ca wrote that the TSX-listed XRP ETFs are available inside TFSAs and RRSPs [4]. Both are secondary guides, not account providers’ own rules.
How are ETF gains taxed compared with holding XRP directly?
As of September 30, 2026, no public source found describes how gains on XRP ETF shares are taxed in a taxable account, in Canada or the US, or how that compares with XRP held directly. The only tax-related statements found are the retirement-account points above [1][4]. Tax on XRP held directly is covered in whether tax is due on XRP in Canada or the US.
Can a Canadian buy a US XRP ETF, and what currency and withholding issues arise?
As of September 30, 2026, it is not known whether Canadian brokerages offer the US-listed spot XRP ETFs, or how US withholding rules apply to Canadian holders of them.
On currency, the 21Shares XRP ETF’s 10-Q for the quarter to 30 June 2026 says its pricing benchmark is designed to reflect the performance of XRP in US dollars [6]. CryptoNewsDaily.ca wrote that returns in Canadian dollars on an unhedged XRP ETF held in a Canadian account are influenced by both XRP’s price and the USD/CAD exchange rate, that a hedged version removes that variable, and that hedging typically costs a small premium [4]. A US-listed fund valued in US dollars would expose a Canadian holder who measures returns in Canadian dollars to the same exchange-rate effect.
What does an ETF share not give its holder?
XRP Insights’ own comparison lists “True ownership”, 24/7 trading and no annual fees on the side of holding XRP directly, against market-hours-only trading and annual fees for ETFs [1]. Under Franklin’s filing, only authorized participants can redeem shares with the fund [3]. Canary’s filing says its custodians, Coinbase Custody and BitGo, safekeep the trust’s XRP, and that the custodians were selected [2].
A share also carries XRP’s price in full. Canary describes its trust as a passive vehicle that does not seek returns beyond tracking the price of XRP, and its 10-Q reports XRP fell 43.27%, from $1.84 on 31 December 2025 to $1.04 on 30 June 2026 [2]. Structures differ too: CryptoSlate left REX-Osprey’s XRPR out of its fund comparison because of its 1940 Act structure and its ability to gain XRP exposure through other funds [5].
Whether an ETF share is the same as, or safer than, holding the coin is set out on the ETF versus owning XRP page, and what the funds actually hold is on whether XRP ETFs hold real XRP.

What we reason Analysis
- Individual buyers trade existing shares on an exchange rather than dealing with the fund. This follows from the Franklin and Canary filings (creation and redemption only with authorized participants) and XRP Insights’ description of buying through a brokerage account.
- The ticker XRP names Bitwise’s US fund in XRP Insights’ list and is one of the three tickers CryptoNewsDaily.ca gives for TSX-listed funds, so the exchange shown next to a ticker decides which fund is bought. This follows from sources [1] and [4].
- A Canadian holding a US-listed spot XRP ETF, measured in Canadian dollars, faces the same USD/CAD effect CryptoNewsDaily.ca describes for unhedged funds. This rests on the 21Shares filing (benchmark in US dollars) and CryptoNewsDaily.ca’s guide [4].
- Retirement-account availability rests on two secondary guides, not on any account provider’s rules, so it remains a claim to confirm with the provider. This follows from the grades of sources [1] and [4].

In plain English
An XRP ETF is a fund that holds XRP and sells shares on a stock exchange. People buy those shares through an ordinary brokerage account, not from the fund itself. In the US there are several such funds, and in Canada three launched on the Toronto Stock Exchange in June 2025. Whether the shares can be held in a retirement or tax-sheltered account depends on the account provider and the plan, so that is worth confirming with the provider. Owning a share is not the same as holding XRP yourself: the fund’s custodians hold the XRP, and the share price falls when XRP falls.
