Is Ripple dumping XRP on holders?

Short answer
Ripple does sell XRP, but its escrowed XRP reaches it on a ledger-enforced schedule, not in one release. Up to 1 billion unlocks monthly, and the increase in potentially circulating XRP has averaged 200 to 300 million a month, Finbold reported in September 2026. crypto.news (July 2026) said XRP sales built, in substantial part, Ripple’s acquisition funds.
The full answer
The question bundles two things. One is the monthly escrow release, which the XRP Ledger enforces on fixed dates [1]. The other is Ripple selling XRP it already controls, which crypto.news reported in July 2026 has rested on years of programmatic sales [2].
Can Ripple release all its escrowed XRP at once?
No. Ripple placed 55 billion XRP into escrow in December 2017 and said the arrangement would let up to 1 billion XRP become available each month, crypto.news reported on September 1, 2026 [1]. The same report said the restrictions operate through the XRP Ledger rather than an informal company commitment. Ripple cannot bring forward the release dates of its existing time-based escrows, and the ledger rejects attempts to finish an escrow before its date [1].
Afterward about 31.28 billion XRP remained in escrow, about 31.28% of the original 100 billion, according to an independent tracker cited by crypto.news. Ripple had not published an updated official balance at the time [1]. Finbold reported in September 2026 that later re-escrow transactions pushed the balance back to around 32 billion XRP, and that roughly one-third of the 100 billion maximum supply remains locked [3]. crypto.news said the next monthly release window is scheduled for Oct. crypto.news reported that the next monthly release window is scheduled for Oct. 1 and that up to another 1 billion XRP could become available, although the exact structure will depend on the escrow objects reaching their programmed release dates.
Does a monthly unlock mean Ripple sold 1 billion XRP?
No. crypto.news said on September 1, 2026 that an unlock makes XRP available to Ripple but does not prove any market sale, and that finishing an escrow does not automatically send the tokens to an exchange, buyer or liquidity provider [1]. The same report said Ripple’s pattern has been to use part of each release for operations, institutional transactions and other corporate purposes and to lock the unused portion again, often returning 600 million to 800 million XRP [1]. The amount returned from the September 2026 release had not been independently confirmed when crypto.news published [1].
Ripple described the same mechanism in its Q1 2025 XRP Markets Report (May 5, 2025). Ripple has no access to escrowed XRP until the monthly release, and the remaining released XRP is put back into escrow each month [4]. When Ripple supports or transfers XRP to third parties such as ETPs and trusts, a reduced amount may be returned to escrow that month, the report said [4].
Finbold reported in September 2026 that up to 1 billion XRP unlocks on the first day of each month, and that the increase in potentially circulating XRP has generally averaged 200 million to 300 million a month rather than the full 1 billion [3]. crypto.news said XRP left outside escrow does not necessarily enter public trading markets immediately, and that the net supply change can only be calculated after re-escrows and transfers from Ripple’s operational wallets are reviewed [1].
How much XRP has Ripple sold each quarter, and to whom?
Ripple reported holding 4,485,366,320 XRP plus 38,030,000,005 XRP in escrow on December 31, 2024, and 4,562,433,147 XRP plus 37,130,000,005 XRP in escrow on March 31, 2025 [4]. Calculating from those figures, escrow fell by 900 million XRP in the first quarter of 2025 while Ripple’s wallets rose by about 77 million, so about 823 million XRP left Ripple’s reported holdings that quarter.
That outflow is not a sales total. Ripple’s report says XRP it transfers to ETPs, trusts and other investments, and reasonably expects to keep in its holdings, stays in “XRP Held by Ripple” until Ripple expects it to enter the broader market [4].
In the same report Ripple said it would sunset the report in its current form starting in Q2 2025, saying its transparency had in many instances been used against the company, especially by former SEC leadership [4]. Ripple said it would keep public access to its XRP holdings on its website [4]. As of October 1, 2026, how much of the XRP leaving Ripple’s holdings since March 2025 was sold, to whom and at what prices has not been established by any public source.
Sales by Ripple’s founders and early insiders are a separate supply source, covered in how the original 100 billion XRP was distributed and how much the founders sold.
Where has the money from Ripple’s sales gone?
crypto.news reported on July 25, 2026 that between 2023 and 2025 Ripple spent roughly $4 billion on acquisitions: Metaco ($250 million), Standard Custody, Hidden Road ($1.25 billion), Rail, GTreasury (about $1 billion) and Palisade [2]. The same report said the war chest behind those deals was built in substantial part on years of programmatic XRP sales, supplemented by equity rounds and a $500 million investment from Fortress, Citadel-linked capital, Pantera, Galaxy, Brevan Howard and Marshall Wace [2]. It said there was nothing improper in the structure and that the sales were disclosed in their era [2]. Whether those purchases create demand for XRP is the subject of what Ripple has bought and whether it helps XRP.
How do Ripple’s sales compare with ETF and treasury buying over the same period?
Ripple’s Q1 2025 report says Ripple from time to time supports or transfers XRP to ETPs, trusts and other investments [4]. That means an XRP fund’s holdings and Ripple’s outflow can contain the same coins, so adding the two together or netting one against the other risks counting XRP twice. Why ETF, treasury, DeFi and derivatives XRP cannot simply be added sets out that problem, and whether the spot ETFs lifted XRP’s price covers fund buying. The sources reviewed for this page do not set Ripple’s XRP sales since March 2025 against ETF and treasury purchases for the same months.
Have the monthly unlocks moved XRP’s price?
Finbold reported in September 2026 that recent escrow releases have had a limited impact on XRP’s market performance and have not triggered sustained selling pressure [3]. crypto.news noted that XRP was higher over the 24 hours before its September 1, 2026 report and said the scheduled unlock alone did not establish the reason, since XRP prices also respond to wider crypto markets, liquidity, institutional activity and developments affecting Ripple or the XRP Ledger [1]. What drives XRP’s price covers those factors.
crypto.news reported XRP near $1.39 around the September 1, 2026 release and said the unlock alone does not establish the reason for price moves [1].
What happens when Ripple’s escrow runs out?
In its May 2025 report Ripple said its escrowed XRP would be released each month over the next 42 months [4]. Re-locking extends that schedule. Ripple said from the beginning that unused XRP would enter new escrows at the end of the existing schedule, and it generally places re-locked XRP behind the escrows already waiting, crypto.news reported in September 2026 [1]. Finbold said in September 2026 that routine re-escrows have extended the program well beyond its original timeline [3]. The mechanics are covered in how the XRP escrow works.
What is the strongest case that Ripple’s selling hurts holders?
The sharpest critique comes from the crypto.news audit of July 25, 2026. It argued that because XRP sales funded the acquisitions, holders did not merely watch Ripple diversify but funded it, transaction by transaction, at whatever prices the sales achieved [2]. It said the acquired businesses run primarily on fiat, traditional assets and RLUSD, giving Ripple a path to institutional success that does not require XRP demand [2]. It also said Ripple’s private status allows selective disclosure of only the numbers that flatter [2].
The audit set an “ungenerous reading”, that Ripple spent three years and $4 billion reducing its dependence on XRP, against a “generous reading” of optionality, with the new businesses as channels XRP could use if demand materializes. It said it could not resolve which reading wins [2]. Ripple ended its quarterly XRP report in its old form in 2025 [4], and for the September 2026 escrow balance crypto.news relied on an independent tracker because Ripple had not published an updated official figure [1].
What we know
- December 2017: Ripple placed 55 billion XRP into escrow and said up to 1 billion XRP could become available each month (crypto.news, September 1, 2026).

What we reason Analysis
- Calling this a dump implies sudden or hidden selling, and the evidence fits neither fully. The escrow opens only on dates the XRP Ledger enforces and most of each release is re-locked (crypto.news’s September 2026 report, Finbold’s September 2026 report and Ripple’s Q1 2025 report). Ripple’s sales are still real and large enough to have funded acquisitions (crypto.news’s July 2026 audit), so they are a scheduled, partly disclosed source of supply to weigh.
- From Ripple’s own Q1 2025 figures, escrow fell 900 million XRP in that quarter while Ripple’s wallets rose about 77 million, so about 823 million XRP left Ripple’s reported holdings. Ripple’s report counts XRP passed to funds and trusts as still held until Ripple expects it to reach the broader market, so this outflow measures XRP Ripple treated as heading to market, not a confirmed sales total.
- Taking Ripple’s 37.13 billion escrow figure for March 31, 2025 and Finbold’s report of around 32 billion after the September 2026 re-escrows, escrow shrank by about 5 billion XRP over roughly 17.5 months, about 290 million a month, consistent with Finbold’s 200 million to 300 million range.
- Because Ripple’s Q1 2025 report says Ripple itself supports or transfers XRP to ETPs and trusts, fund holdings and Ripple’s outflow can contain the same XRP, so adding or netting the two can count coins twice.
- Since Ripple ended its quarterly report in its old form (Ripple, May 2025), outsiders rely more on ledger trackers for escrow balances, as crypto.news did in September 2026, and on reporting such as crypto.news’s July 2026 audit for how sale proceeds were used.
What's still open
- As of October 1, 2026, how much of the XRP that left Ripple’s holdings since March 2025 was sold, to whom, and at what prices has not been established by any public source.
- As of October 1, 2026, how much of the October 1, 2026 release Ripple will lock back into escrow is not yet known.
- As of October 1, 2026, no public source compares Ripple’s XRP sales with ETF and treasury purchases over the same months.
- As of October 1, 2026, the sources checked do not establish this: In a report published September 1, 2026, crypto.news said Ripple unlocked 1 billion XRP in three transactions of 500 million, 400 million and 100 million. Searched:
In plain English
Ripple, the company, holds a large amount of XRP, and most of it sits in locks on the XRP Ledger that open on a fixed monthly schedule. Ripple uses part of each month’s amount and has usually locked most of it again. Ripple does sell XRP, and a July 2026 crypto.news report said those sales helped pay for the companies Ripple bought. Ripple stopped its quarterly XRP report in its old form in 2025, and how much it has sold since then, and to whom, is not public.
