The full answer
What is the XRP escrow?
Ripple originally placed 55 billion XRP into escrow in December 2017, crypto.news reported on September 1, 2026 [3]. The company said the arrangement would make its supply schedule more predictable by allowing up to 1 billion XRP to become available each month [3]. crypto.news reported that Ripple cannot bring forward the release dates of XRP in its existing time-based escrows, and that the ledger rejects attempts to finish an escrow before its specified date [3]. Finbold described the same rule in September 2026: the timing of each release is enforced by the XRP Ledger, so tokens cannot be accessed before their scheduled unlock date [4]. crypto.news reported on September 1, 2026 that approximately 31.28 billion XRP remained inside active on-ledger escrow objects after the September release, according to an independent tracker that queries validated XRP Ledger data.
The escrow is one part of a longer supply story. The page on how the original 100 billion XRP was distributed and what the founders sold covers the XRP that sits outside it.
How does a monthly release work?
Finbold reported in September 2026 that up to 1 billion XRP unlocks on the first day of each month [4]. Ripple’s Q1 2025 XRP Markets Report, published May 5, 2025, said Ripple has no access to escrowed XRP until the escrow releases it on a monthly basis. It said the remaining XRP released is put back into escrow each month [1]. The same report said a reduced amount may be returned to escrow in months when Ripple supports or transfers XRP to third parties such as ETPs and trusts [1].
The September 2026 release shows how this works. Ripple unlocked 1 billion XRP on September 1 in three transactions of 500 million, 400 million and 100 million, crypto.news reported [3]. An EscrowFinish transaction delivers the XRP to its designated account once the release conditions are met. It does not automatically send the tokens to an exchange, buyer or liquidity provider [3]. crypto.news said an unlock makes XRP available to Ripple but does not prove any market sale [3]. It described Ripple’s historical pattern as using part of each release for operations, institutional transactions and other corporate purposes, and locking the unused portion again [3]. When Ripple re-locks XRP, it generally places it behind the escrows already waiting in the release queue [3].
The next window opens October 1, 2026, for up to 1 billion XRP, XRP Insights reported on September 26, 2026 [2]. crypto.news noted that the exact structure depends on which escrow objects reach their programmed release dates [3].
How much XRP is in escrow, and how much does Ripple hold outside it?
Ripple’s last quarterly report gave two figures for March 31, 2025: 37,130,000,005 XRP subject to on-ledger escrow and 4,562,433,147 XRP held by Ripple [1]. Ripple then ended the report in its current form from Q2 2025. It said it would keep public access to its XRP holdings on its website [1].
Later balances come from trackers:
- A tracker cited by crypto.news counted about 32.28 billion XRP in escrow before the September 1, 2026 release and about 31.28 billion after it [3].
- Finbold reported that re-escrow transactions then pushed the balance back to around 32 billion [4].
- XRP Insights sums the live Escrow objects on the ledger. It reported 31.98 billion XRP in escrow on September 26, 2026, which is 32.0% of the fixed 100 billion supply. It also reported a further 4.74 billion XRP in Ripple operational wallets [2].
crypto.news noted that Ripple’s operational wallets hold previously released XRP, separate from the XRP still under time locks [3].
Added together, XRP Insights’ two figures come to about 36.72 billion XRP under Ripple’s control as of September 26, 2026. Ripple’s own count at March 31, 2025 was 41.69 billion. Because the two totals use different methods, the gap of about 5 billion is approximate.
How much of each monthly release has been re-locked, trailing quarters versus earlier years?
Ripple reported escrow of 38,030,000,005 XRP on December 31, 2024 and 37,130,000,005 XRP on March 31, 2025 [1]. crypto.news wrote on September 1, 2026 that Ripple has often returned between 600 million and 800 million XRP after monthly unlocks [3]. Finbold reported in September 2026 that the net increase in potentially circulating XRP has generally averaged 200 million to 300 million a month, rather than the full 1 billion released [4].
Ripple’s two quarter-end figures show the escrow fell by 900 million XRP across three monthly releases in Q1 2025. If each release was the full 1 billion, about 70% was re-locked that quarter. Ripple’s held XRP rose by about 77 million over the same quarter, so about 823 million XRP left Ripple’s reported holdings.
From March 31, 2025 (37.13 billion, Ripple [1]) to September 26, 2026 (31.98 billion, XRP Insights [2]), the escrow fell by 5.15 billion over 18 monthly releases. That is about 286 million a month, so about 71% of each 1 billion was re-locked on average. The two end points come from different sources, so this is an estimate.
The earlier-years comparison stays open, because dated re-lock figures for 2018 through 2023 are not established here.
At the current net release rate, when would the escrow run out?
At the trailing rate of about 286 million a month, 31.98 billion XRP lasts about 112 more months, into early 2036. Finbold’s range of 200 million to 300 million a month [4] puts the end between about mid-2035 and early 2040. The fastest possible path has Ripple re-locking nothing and each release being a full 1 billion. On that path the escrow would be empty after about 32 releases, around May 2029. These are projections from past behaviour. Ripple decides each month how much to re-lock, and crypto.news reported that the size of each release depends on the escrow objects reaching their dates [3].
What happens when the escrow runs out?
In May 2025, Ripple described its escrowed XRP as lockups that will be released each month over the next 42 months [1]. That end date keeps moving. crypto.news reported that Ripple said from the start that unused XRP would enter new escrows at the end of the existing schedule, and that future re-escrows extend the schedule [3]. Finbold reported that the program has extended well beyond its original timeline because unused tokens are routinely re-escrowed [4].
Ripple’s holdings fall into two categories, escrowed XRP and XRP in its wallets [1], and the supply is fixed at 100 billion [2]. Once the escrow is empty, the monthly releases stop, and Ripple holds only the XRP already in its wallets. The end of the escrow does not create new XRP. It removes the time limit on how fast Ripple can use its remaining holdings.
XRP outside escrow does not necessarily enter public trading markets right away, crypto.news noted [3]. How much of the 100 billion can actually be traded is covered on the page about how much XRP is available to trade.
How independent are the escrow figures, and can they be checked on-ledger?
The escrow balance can be read from the ledger. XRP Insights says it sums escrow from Escrow objects on the XRP Ledger via rippled [2]. crypto.news said a tracker’s figure should be attributed to the tracker and not presented as a company disclosure. It noted that Ripple had not published an updated official escrow balance at the time, and that different data services can show temporary discrepancies when they use cached figures [3].
Re-locks can also be checked on-ledger. crypto.news said new EscrowCreate transactions would provide on-chain evidence of how much XRP Ripple returned to time locks [3]. It also reported that September 2026’s returned amount was not yet independently confirmed when it published [3].
The operational wallet figure is weaker. I could not find the Ripple-commissioned escrow report by Blockworks Advisory as of September 30, 2026, so I do not rely on it here.
What is the case against reading the escrow as a safeguard?
The escrow limits when Ripple can use its XRP. It does not limit whether Ripple uses it. Ripple’s report said a reduced amount of XRP may be returned to escrow in months when it transfers XRP to third parties [1]. On Finbold’s figures, 200 million to 300 million XRP a month has been added to potentially circulating supply [4]. In May 2025, Ripple said it would sunset the XRP Markets Report in its current form starting in Q2 2025 and said it would maintain public access to its XRP holdings on its website [1]. It said its transparency had been used against the company, singling out former SEC leadership [1]. Since then, where released XRP goes has had to be traced by trackers, not read from a company report.
Some sources point the other way. crypto.news said an unlock does not prove a sale [3]. Finbold wrote in September 2026 that recent releases had a limited impact on XRP’s market performance and had not triggered sustained selling pressure [4]. What Ripple does with the XRP it keeps each month is examined on the page is Ripple dumping XRP on holders?.
What we know
- Finbold reported in 2026 that Ripple originally placed 55 billion XRP into escrow contracts, and that up to 1 billion XRP is unlocked on the first day of each month.
- The XRP Ledger enforces each release date. Ripple cannot bring forward the release dates of XRP in its existing time-based escrows, and the ledger rejects attempts to finish an escrow before its specified date (crypto.news).
- Ripple’s Q1 2025 XRP Markets Report said the remaining XRP released is put back into escrow each month. It also said a reduced amount of XRP may be returned to escrow in a month when Ripple supports or transfers XRP to third parties such as ETPs and trusts.
- Ripple reported 38,030,000,005 XRP in escrow on December 31, 2024. It reported 37,130,000,005 XRP in escrow and 4,562,433,147 XRP held by Ripple on March 31, 2025 (Ripple Q1 2025 XRP Markets Report).
- Ripple said on May 5, 2025 that it would sunset the XRP Markets Report in its current form starting in Q2 2025.
- XRP Insights reported 31.98 billion XRP in escrow (32.0% of the fixed 100 billion supply) and a further 4.74 billion XRP in Ripple operational wallets as of September 26, 2026.
- crypto.news (September 1, 2026) wrote that Ripple has often returned between 600 million and 800 million XRP after monthly unlocks. Finbold (September 2026) reported that the net increase in potentially circulating XRP has generally averaged 200 million to 300 million a month.
- The next release window opens October 1, 2026, for up to 1 billion XRP (XRP Insights, September 26, 2026; crypto.news, September 1, 2026).
What we reason Analysis
- Q1 2025 re-lock share: Ripple’s escrow fell by 900 million XRP from December 31, 2024 to March 31, 2025. That quarter had three monthly releases of up to 1 billion each. If each release was the full 1 billion, about 70% was re-locked. This follows from Ripple’s two quarter-end escrow figures.
- XRP leaving Ripple’s disclosed holdings in Q1 2025: escrow fell by 900 million while Ripple’s held XRP rose by about 77 million, so about 823 million XRP left Ripple’s reported holdings that quarter. This follows from Ripple’s quarter-end figures.
- Trailing net release: escrow went from 37.13 billion (Ripple, March 31, 2025) to 31.98 billion (XRP Insights, September 26, 2026). That is a fall of 5.15 billion over 18 monthly releases, or about 286 million a month, so about 71% of each 1 billion was re-locked on average. The two figures come from different sources and methods.
- Run-out timing: at about 286 million a month, 31.98 billion lasts about 112 months, into early 2036. At Finbold’s range of 200 million to 300 million a month, it runs out between about mid-2035 and early 2040. If Ripple re-locked nothing and each release were a full 1 billion, the escrow would be empty after about 32 releases, around May 2029. This follows from the XRP Insights balance, the trailing rate and Finbold’s range.
- End state: the supply is fixed at 100 billion, and Ripple’s holdings fall into escrowed XRP and XRP in its wallets. Once the escrow is empty, the monthly releases end, and Ripple holds only XRP outside escrow. This follows from Ripple’s description of its two holding categories and XRP Insights’ fixed-supply figure.
- Ripple’s combined position: XRP Insights’ escrow and operational wallet figures add to about 36.72 billion XRP on September 26, 2026. Ripple’s own count was 41.69 billion on March 31, 2025. The two totals use different methods, so the difference of about 5 billion is approximate.
What's still open
- No dated monthly or quarterly re-lock figures for 2018 through 2023 were public as of September 30, 2026.
- As of September 1, 2026, no independently verified total of how much XRP was re-escrowed after the September release had been published.
- Ripple has not published a quarter-end escrow balance since March 31, 2025. Later balances come from trackers.
- As of October 1, 2026, the sources checked do not establish this: Ripple originally placed 55 billion XRP into escrow in December 2017, crypto.news reported on September 1, 2026. The company said the arrangement would make its supply schedule more predictable by allowing up to 1 billion XRP to become available each month. crypto.news reported that Ripple cannot bring forward the release dates of XRP in its existing time-based escrows, and that the ledger rejects attempts to finish an escrow before its specified date. Finbold described the same rule in September 2026: the timing of each release is enforced by the XRP Ledger, so tokens cannot be accessed before their scheduled unlock date. Finbold described the schedule: up to 1 billion XRP is unlocked on the first day of each month, but Ripple typically does not release the full amount into circulation, and has historically returned most of the unlocked tokens to new escrow contracts. crypto.news reported on September 1, 2026 that an independent tracker querying validated XRP Ledger data showed approximately 31.28 billion XRP in active on-ledger escrow objects after the September release; this is the tracker’s figure as relayed by crypto.news, not a verified total of how much was re-escrowed.
In plain English
In 2017 Ripple put a large part of its XRP under timed locks on the XRP Ledger. Each month up to 1 billion XRP becomes available to Ripple, and Ripple locks the part it does not use back up. About 32 billion XRP was still locked in late September 2026, according to a tracker that reads the ledger. Once the locks are used up, no more XRP is released, and Ripple is left with whatever XRP it already holds outside the locks.
