Does XRP need to replace money to succeed?
Also asked as: “What is XRP actually used for?” · “Will XRP replace fiat currencies?”

Short answer
No. The jobs Ripple describes for XRP, such as liquidity, settlement and collateral, do not require anyone to price goods in XRP or spend it as cash. On its own ledger the dollar role is held by stablecoins: DefiLlama showed $1.213 billion there on 29 September 2026, 92.46% of it Ripple’s RLUSD.
The full answer
What would replacing money mean, and what does the case for XRP claim?
Replacing money would mean people and firms price goods in XRP, hold it as savings and spend it at checkout. The case Ripple makes for XRP is narrower. In its post of 23 July 2026, Ripple wrote that XRP will increasingly serve as a complementary asset for liquidity, settlement, swaps, collateral and payments across supported chains [1]. That sentence is Ripple’s expectation for the future, not a measured result.
The same post gives the digital dollar job to a different token. Ripple says RLUSD is designed for institutional use and is issued by Standard Custody & Trust Company, a New York Department of Financial Services chartered trust company [1]. Ripple says RLUSD was first issued on the XRP Ledger and Ethereum, and that its expansion is anchored by the XRPL EVM Sidechain alongside launches on Base, Optimism, Ink and Unichain [1]. Ripple introduced Ripple Mint on 23 July 2026 for institutions to mint, redeem and manage RLUSD, and the post says it is available to existing RLUSD customers [1]. Ripple wrote that these tools make it easier for exchanges, market makers, fintechs and institutional customers to scale RLUSD activity [1].
This follows from Ripple’s 23 July 2026 post: in Ripple’s own design the unit of account is the dollar. XRP is described as a helper asset beside it, not as the currency that replaces it.
Where does the money role sit on the XRP Ledger today?
It sits with stablecoins. DefiLlama’s XRPL page, checked on 29 September 2026, showed $1.213 billion of stablecoins on the ledger, with RLUSD at 92.46% [2]. DefiLlama’s stablecoins-by-chain page, checked the same day, showed $306.316 billion of stablecoins across all chains, with $146.369 billion on Ethereum and $94.52 billion on Tron [3].
Calculated from those two DefiLlama figures, the XRP Ledger held about 0.4% of all stablecoins on 29 September 2026. It is not the leading stablecoin chain. The argument on this page does not need it to be one, because the roles Ripple describes for XRP sit beside the dollar token, not in place of it. Whether stablecoins could also take over those helper roles is covered in will RLUSD and other stablecoins replace XRP.
If XRP is not money, what does it do?
The fuller list is on what XRP is actually used for. Two roles in this page’s sources work without any consumer spending XRP.
The first is being held by funds. Bitcoin.com News reported that custodians of seven XRP funds hold 1,179.62 million XRP, equal to 1.18% of the fixed 100 billion supply [4].
The second is being wrapped for use on other chains. CoinGecko’s description, checked on 29 September 2026, says uXRP is a tokenized version of XRP designed for trading on chains such as Base, Polygon and Arbitrum, backed 1:1 by XRP reserves held by Coinbase Custody [5]. CoinGecko showed a uXRP market cap of $2,709,303 that day [5].
From the fund holdings and the uXRP data: these roles need XRP to be held, moved and priced by institutions and software. They do not need a shop to list prices in XRP. The payment-side version of this argument, where XRP sits between two currencies for seconds, is explained in how XRP works as a bridge, and whether the firms using it must keep XRP on their books is covered in do banks and businesses need to hold XRP.
Can ordinary people pay for things with XRP today, and where?
The public sources reviewed for this page do not answer this as of 30 September 2026. None of them counts shops, apps or card programmes that accept XRP, and none measures how much XRP consumers spend.
The ledger-wide counts that are held do not show purpose. DefiLlama’s XRPL page, checked on 29 September 2026, showed 3.19 million transactions and 45,184 active addresses over 24 hours [2]. Those counts cover every kind of activity on the ledger, so they cannot show how much of it is people buying things. The answer to this page’s question does not depend on that number, because the roles described above are institutional.
What is the strongest case against the infrastructure argument?
A job that does not need to be visible still has to show up somewhere. On the XRP Ledger itself, DefiLlama’s page checked on 29 September 2026 showed chain fees of $1,659 over 24 hours against an XRP market cap of $95.308 billion [2]. The same page showed DeFi TVL of $46.56 million and DEX volume of $9.67 million over 24 hours [2]. The wrapped uXRP token had a market cap of $2,709,303 on CoinGecko on 29 September 2026 [5].
From those figures: “near-invisible infrastructure” can become a way to explain away small numbers. The claim that XRP does not need to be money is sound as logic, but it does not show that the infrastructure role is happening at scale. Ripple’s 23 July 2026 post gives no volumes for the uses it describes [1]. The critique that most XRP activity is trading rather than use is set out in is most XRP activity speculation.
What would show the infrastructure role working?
The useful evidence would be measured volumes for the roles Ripple names, such as XRP used in settlement between currencies, XRP posted as collateral and XRP supplied as trading liquidity, reported with dates and sources rather than as plans. How to track those measures is covered in how to measure how much XRP is actually used.

What we reason Analysis
- Calculated from DefiLlama’s two pages checked 29 September 2026: $1.213 billion of stablecoins on the XRP Ledger is about 0.4% of the $306.316 billion total. The ledger is not the leading stablecoin chain, and the case for XRP’s jobs set out on this page does not rest on it becoming one.
- Reading Ripple’s 23 July 2026 post: in Ripple’s own description the digital dollar role goes to RLUSD, and XRP is described as a complementary asset. The unit of account in that design is the dollar, not XRP.
- From the fund holdings reported by Bitcoin.com News and the uXRP data on CoinGecko: holding XRP in a fund and wrapping it for use on other chains are roles that work without shops or consumers pricing anything in XRP.
- From DefiLlama’s 29 September 2026 figures: a role that does not need to be visible still has to show up somewhere measurable, and on the XRP Ledger itself the daily fee and DeFi figures are small next to the XRP market cap.
What's still open
- As of 30 September 2026, no public source gives a count of merchants, apps or card programmes that accept XRP for purchases, or a measure of consumer spending in XRP. Searched:
- As of 30 September 2026, no public source splits XRP Ledger transactions by purpose, so consumer payments cannot be separated from trading, transfers or other activity.
- As of 30 September 2026, no source measures how much XRP is used in the liquidity, settlement and collateral roles Ripple describes; Ripple’s 23 July 2026 post gives no volumes.
In plain English
Money is what people use to price things and pay for them, and XRP does not need to become that to have a job. Ripple itself uses a separate dollar token, RLUSD, as the digital dollar and describes XRP as a helper asset for moving and settling value between institutions. The stablecoins on the XRP Ledger are almost all RLUSD, and they are a small share of all stablecoins. The weak point in the argument is that this behind-the-scenes use is hard to see in the numbers today, and the sources here do not show how often ordinary people pay with XRP.
