Is most XRP activity speculation rather than real use?
Confirmed Published 5 min read
Short answer
Trading dominates the published XRP activity figures, much of it in futures. Most productive uses disclose no size, so the full claim cannot be tested. Cryptonomist reported about $9 billion of CME and Binance XRP futures volume against $2.2 billion of spot in the 24 hours to 23 September 2026.
The full answer
The critique holds that most XRP activity is trading on exchanges and derivatives venues. The same critique says the documented productive uses are small or undisclosed. The published numbers support the first half. The second half is harder to test, because the productive uses mostly do not report their size.
What do the published trading figures show?
On 23 September 2026, Cryptonomist cited CoinGlass and CME data. It said combined XRP futures volume on CME and Binance reached about $9 billion in 24 hours. Spot trading over the same period was $2.2 billion [1]. The same report put CME’s XRP futures open interest at $756 million, up more than 16%, and Binance’s at nearly $700 million [1]. Cryptonomist wrote that derivatives traders, not everyday buyers on exchanges, drove the bulk of that move [1].
The quarterly picture points the same way. CCN reported on 20 August 2026, drawing on Blockworks’ State of XRP report, that XRP spot volume on centralized exchanges fell 54% in Q2 2026 to $57.6 billion. In the same quarter, perpetual futures volume fell 44% to $154.9 billion [2]. Futures volume was about four times spot volume on the September day and about 2.7 times spot volume across Q2.
How much activity happens on the XRP Ledger itself?
DefiLlama’s XRPL page, checked 29 September 2026, showed $9.67 million of DEX volume over 24 hours and $57.99 million over seven days [3]. It showed $46.56 million of DeFi total value locked. It also showed chain fees of $1,659 over 24 hours, against an XRP market cap of $95.308 billion [3]. That day’s DEX volume is about 0.1% of the futures day Cryptonomist reported a week earlier. At a flat $1,659 a day, fees would come to about $0.6 million a year, under 0.001% of the market cap on the same page.
CCN, citing Blockworks, reported that the ledger processed 222.4 million transactions in Q2 2026. Average daily active addresses fell 11%, payment volume fell 27% and DEX volume fell 36% in that quarter [2]. Stablecoin transfer volume on the ledger rose to about $10 billion in Q2 2026, and RLUSD generated about $9 billion of it [2]. That value moves in dollar tokens, not XRP. CCN reported an average transaction cost of $0.00024 and about 40,600 XRP burned in the quarter [2]. It concluded that billions of dollars can move across the ledger without creating substantial fee demand or meaningfully reducing XRP’s supply. In its view, adoption of the ledger and appreciation of its token “remain two separate stories” [2]. These are gross counts. The page on how much XRP Ledger activity is bots, spam or wash trading examines how much of them reflects automated or self-trading.
How large are the productive uses of XRP?
Payments. Ripple said on 5 November 2025 that total Ripple Payments volumes had passed $95 billion. It described the platform as using RLUSD and XRP [4]. The company gave no split between the two, no split against fiat legs, and no period. How much of that volume touched XRP is the subject of how much of Ripple’s payment volume actually uses XRP, and the mechanism is covered in how Ripple’s On-Demand Liquidity uses XRP. Payments outside Ripple’s products are a separate evidence set, covered in whether XRP is used for payments outside Ripple.
Collateral. In the same release, Ripple said Ripple Prime “is now expanding into collateralized lending for XRP” [4]. CoinDesk reported on 12 May 2026 that Ripple had closed a $200 million debt facility from funds managed by Neuberger Specialty Finance to support Ripple Prime [5]. ICObench wrote in May 2026 that Ripple Prime “reportedly” accepts XRP as eligible collateral alongside Treasuries, gold and bitcoin [6]. ICObench also said the data cannot confirm whether the Neuberger facility had been drawn in material size [6]. crypto.news wrote on 25 July 2026 that at Ripple Prime, RLUSD rather than XRP does the new collateral work [7].
DeFi. U.Today reported that FXRP, a token representing XRP on Flare, became usable as collateral in Sentora’s RLUSD Main vault on Morpho. It said the market would open with a “conservative supply cap” and gave no number [8].
Holding. CoinDesk reported that spot XRP ETFs had cumulative net inflows of $1.35 billion and net assets of $1.18 billion on 12 May 2026. That was about 1.3% of XRP’s market cap [5]. CCN reported $253.6 million of net inflows into global XRP exchange-traded products in Q2 2026 [2]. Holdings of this kind are neither trading nor use, and the page on whether ETF-held XRP sits idle takes that up.
Is futures trading the same as speculation?
Futures volume and open interest mix two kinds of position. Holders, market makers and lenders use futures to hedge price risk. Other traders use them to bet on direction. None of the sources above splits the CME or Binance figures between the two, so the futures totals set an upper bound on speculation rather than measuring it. The page on hedging XRP on regulated markets covers what CME access allows.
Volume also counts turnover, while collateral, payment inventory and fund holdings are stocks. A billion dollars of XRP posted as collateral produces almost no trading volume. A comparison made only by volume will favour trading for that reason, whatever the real balance of use.
Is XRP’s speculative share higher or lower than bitcoin’s or ether’s on the same measure?
As of 30 September 2026, I could not find an answer to this question. A fair test would take the futures-to-spot volume ratio and chain fees as a share of market cap for XRP, bitcoin and ether. It would use the same data provider and the same dates for all three. The sources hold these figures for XRP only, and the gap is logged for research.
What is the strongest case that the use is real?
Ripple’s own statements are the main evidence for use. The company said on 5 November 2025 that its payments platform uses XRP and that Ripple Prime is expanding into XRP-backed lending [4]. ICObench quoted analysts writing for MoneyCheck, who said Ripple Prime’s model “elevates XRP from a speculative asset into functional market plumbing” [6]. CoinDesk wrote on 12 May 2026 that institutional use cases give XRP “a function beyond speculative trading” [5]. Cryptonomist reported on 23 September 2026 that XRP Ledger transaction activity picked up in step with rising open interest [1].
The counter-evidence is also sourced. crypto.news set out an “ungenerous reading” in which Ripple has spent $4 billion reducing its dependence on XRP. It also set out a “generous reading” of optionality, and said the audit cannot settle which reading wins [7]. ICObench described institutional views on XRP as divided, with record short exposure on Binance alongside spot accumulation [6]. The fuller case for XRP’s uses is set out on what XRP is actually used for.
What would settle the question?
The missing numbers are the XRP share of Ripple Payments volume, the amount of XRP actually posted and drawn against at Ripple Prime and on Morpho, and a hedging split of futures positions. The method for building those measures is on how to measure how much XRP is actually used.
What we know
- 23 September 2026: Cryptonomist, citing CoinGlass and CME data, said combined XRP futures volume on CME and Binance reached about $9 billion in 24 hours. Spot trading over the same period was $2.2 billion. CME’s XRP futures open interest was $756 million and Binance’s was nearly $700 million.
- 20 August 2026: CCN reported on Q2 2026 from Blockworks’ State of XRP report. Centralized exchange spot volume fell 54% to $57.6 billion and perpetual futures volume fell 44% to $154.9 billion.
- 20 August 2026: CCN, citing Blockworks, reported Q2 2026 XRP Ledger figures. The ledger processed 222.4 million transactions. Stablecoin transfer volume was about $10 billion, of which RLUSD generated about $9 billion. The average transaction cost was $0.00024 and about 40,600 XRP were burned.
- Checked 29 September 2026: DefiLlama’s XRPL page showed DEX volume of $9.67 million over 24 hours and $57.99 million over 7 days. It showed DeFi TVL of $46.56 million, chain fees of $1,659 over 24 hours and an XRP market cap of $95.308 billion.
- 5 November 2025: Ripple said total Ripple Payments volumes had passed $95 billion. It described Ripple Payments as using RLUSD and XRP and did not split the volume by asset.
- 5 November 2025: Ripple said Ripple Prime was expanding into collateralized lending for XRP.
- 12 May 2026: CoinDesk reported that Ripple had closed a $200 million debt facility from funds managed by Neuberger Specialty Finance to support Ripple Prime. ICObench reported the same month that Ripple Prime ‘reportedly’ accepts XRP as eligible collateral.
- 25 July 2026: crypto.news wrote that at Ripple Prime, RLUSD rather than XRP does the new collateral work.
- 12 May 2026: CoinDesk reported cumulative net inflows of $1.35 billion to spot XRP ETFs, with total net assets of $1.18 billion, about 1.3% of XRP’s market cap.
What we reason Analysis
- Futures volume was about four times spot volume in the 24 hours Cryptonomist reported on 23 September 2026 ($9 billion against $2.2 billion). Perpetual futures volume was about 2.7 times centralized spot volume in Q2 2026 ($154.9 billion against $57.6 billion, CCN citing Blockworks).
- XRP Ledger DEX volume of $9.67 million over 24 hours (DefiLlama, checked 29 September 2026) is about 0.1% of the roughly $9 billion futures day Cryptonomist reported on 23 September 2026. The two figures come from different days and sources, so the ratio shows scale only.
- Chain fees of $1,659 a day (DefiLlama, 29 September 2026) come to about $0.6 million a year if held flat. That is under 0.001% of the $95.308 billion market cap on the same page.
- Volume counts trades, while collateral, payment inventory and ETF holdings are stocks that produce little volume. Comparing uses by volume therefore favours trading. This follows from how the cited sources define volume and holdings.
- A Cryptonomist report of 23 September 2026 put combined futures volume on CME and Binance at about $9 billion, dwarfing the $2.2 billion recorded in spot trading over the same period.
What's still open
- As of 30 September 2026, Ripple has disclosed no share of Ripple Payments volume that moved through XRP. The only figure available was the $95 billion total from 5 November 2025.
- As of 30 September 2026, I could not find any figure for XRP actually posted as collateral at Ripple Prime. ICObench (May 2026) said it could not confirm whether the Neuberger facility had been drawn in material size.
- As of 30 September 2026, the project holds no figure for FXRP posted on Morpho. U.Today’s launch report described a ‘conservative supply cap’ without a number.
- As of 30 September 2026, I could not find any bitcoin or ether futures-to-spot ratios or fee-to-market-cap figures measured the same way. A same-measure comparison was not possible.
- As of 30 September 2026, I could not find any source that splits CME or Binance XRP futures open interest into hedging and directional positions.
In plain English
Most of the XRP activity that can be counted is trading, and much of that trading is in futures. Futures are contracts on the price, used either to bet or to hedge, rather than uses of the coin itself. Activity on the XRP Ledger is far smaller, and the fees it pays are tiny next to XRP’s total market value. Ripple says its payments platform uses XRP and that Ripple Prime is expanding into collateralized lending for XRP. A Morpho market accepting FXRP as collateral was announced with a conservative supply cap. No source confirms how much XRP is actually used or posted as collateral. The numbers show that trading is far larger than any use that can be measured, but they cannot show how large real use is.
