Is XRP used for payments outside Ripple's own products?
Analysis Published 4 min read
Short answer
Not yet clearly shown. An April 1, 2026 article describes XRP payment routes that run through Ripple’s On-Demand Liquidity rails, with XRP as the bridge asset. No bank is forced to use XRP directly on those routes, so the described use sits inside Ripple’s own product rather than outside it.
The full answer
What counts as XRP use outside Ripple’s products?
For this page, a payment counts as outside Ripple’s products when an independent remittance firm, an exchange moving funds between venues, or a merchant payment processor sends or settles value in XRP without Ripple Payments or On-Demand Liquidity (ODL) doing the conversion. As of September 30, 2026, I found none of those three with a named firm, a date and a volume figure.
The public sources reviewed give no dated XRP volume from an independent remitter or an exchange transfer series.
No such case turned up. The public record names no independent remitter settling in XRP, gives no figure for XRP moved between exchanges, and names no merchant processor with a dated XRP volume. The remittance firms that do appear are Ripple’s own customers: Ripple said on March 11, 2026 that its Australian customers include Hai Ha Money Transfer, Novatti Group, Stables, Caleb & Brown, Flash Payments and Independent Reserve [5].
Where does XRP show up in the payments that are documented?
In Ripple’s On-Demand Liquidity. 24/7 Wall St. reported on April 1, 2026 that ODL is the Ripple product that actually requires XRP as a bridge asset, and that only around 40% of RippleNet partners use it [1]. The same article said RippleNet can run entirely in fiat, that Santander uses RippleNet’s messaging layer without touching XRP directly, and that Deutsche Bank’s integration runs on Ripple’s rails but does not involve the token [1]. CryptoSlate wrote on December 20, 2025 that many institutions use RippleNet messaging and fiat-only settlement, and that XRP only appears where prefunding costs and FX spreads justify taking token volatility risk [7]. It cited DAS Research putting ODL volume at about $1.3 billion in the second quarter of 2025 [7]. The mechanics are covered on How does Ripple’s On-Demand Liquidity (ODL) use XRP?.
Ripple’s own figures do not isolate XRP. Ripple said on November 5, 2025 that Ripple Payments is a cross-border platform using RLUSD and XRP, and that total Ripple Payments volumes had surpassed $95 billion [3]. On April 24, 2026 Ripple said its platform supports stablecoins including USDC, USDT and RLUSD, settles across stablecoins and fiat rails, and powers cross-border payments across 60+ markets and $100B+ in volume [4]. Neither figure is split by settlement asset in the published passages, a gap followed up on How much of Ripple’s payment volume actually uses XRP?.
Does the Thunes route count as use outside Ripple?
Only at the front end. 24/7 Wall St. reported on April 1, 2026 that Thunes, a Singapore-based payments company Ripple has partnered with since 2020, brought stablecoin payouts to all 11,500 SWIFT-connected banks through their existing SWIFT messaging [1]. It said a payment can now flow through SWIFT, be routed via Thunes, and settle on Ripple’s ODL rails using XRP as the bridge asset, without any bank being forced to use XRP directly [1]. The article gave no volume for that route.
A third party starts the payment, but the XRP leg still runs inside Ripple’s ODL, so this is not independent XRP settlement. SWIFT’s own new retail framework does not require XRP at any point in the payment flow, according to the same report [1].
Inside Ripple’s own products, is XRP the settlement asset?
Mostly not, according to crypto.news. It reported on July 8, 2026 that inside Ripple’s product stack the asset doing the settlement work is predominantly RLUSD, Ripple’s dollar stablecoin, not XRP [2]. It said the tokenized-Treasury settlement Ripple ran with JPMorgan, Mastercard and Ondo cleared on the XRP Ledger with RLUSD carrying the money [2]. On collateral, it described the current Ripple Prime arrangement as Ripple’s own brokerage accepting Ripple’s own asset, and said the market has learned to discount announcements in which Ripple is both counterparties [2]. Coin Gabbar reported that in Convera’s Ripple partnership, announced March 31, 2026, payments start and end in fiat with RLUSD used only in the middle [6]. Why partnership headlines do not settle this is covered on Do Ripple partnership announcements mean demand for XRP?.
What is the strongest case against this finding?
Two points cut the other way. 24/7 Wall St. named India-to-Pakistan, UAE-to-Philippines and Japan-to-Thailand as corridors where Ripple’s direct local bank partnerships and pre-existing ODL liquidity give it an edge that SWIFT’s new framework has not solved [1]. crypto.news reported the bull argument that RLUSD adoption seeds the ledger with the institutional liquidity that XRP bridging would one day plug into, and called that argument coherent while noting that its second half is not yet observable [2].
The absence of public outside use is not proof that none exists. No on-chain data on XRP transfers between exchanges has been cited, so that category is unmeasured rather than measured at zero. The broader question of how much XRP activity is trading rather than use is taken up on Is most XRP activity speculation rather than real use?, and the liquidity conditions any bridge route depends on are on Why does liquidity depth matter for XRP as a bridge?.
What would show independent use?
24/7 Wall St. said on April 1, 2026 that the trigger worth watching was mid-2026, when the first wave of SWIFT corridors goes live, and whether banks in the India-Pakistan, UAE and Southeast Asian corridors start routing payments through Thunes into Ripple’s ODL rails [1]. crypto.news named, for collateral, a parallel first signal: a brokerage or clearing venue that Ripple does not own announcing that it accepts XRP as margin collateral [2].
The payments equivalent would be a named firm outside Ripple reporting a dated volume settled in XRP. As of September 30, 2026, no such report has been published, nor any report on whether the mid-2026 SWIFT corridors routed into ODL.

What we reason Analysis
- Every XRP payment route in the public sources reviewed runs through a Ripple product.
- The Thunes route puts a third party at the front of the payment, but the XRP leg still settles on Ripple’s On-Demand Liquidity. This follows from 24/7 Wall St.'s April 1, 2026 description of the routing chain, which gives no volume for it.
- Neither of Ripple’s volume figures ($95 billion, November 2025; $100B+, April 2026) is split by settlement asset in the passages this site holds, so neither shows how much moved in XRP. This follows from Ripple’s November 5, 2025 release and April 24, 2026 post.
- The absence of public outside use is not proof that no outside use exists. No public on-chain data on transfers between exchanges has been cited, so that category is unmeasured rather than measured at zero.
What's still open
- Which independent remittance firm settles in XRP outside Ripple’s products, and at what volume, as of September 30, 2026?
- How much XRP moves between exchanges as a funding or rebalancing rail, as of September 30, 2026?
- Which merchant payment processor accepts or settles in XRP, and at what dated volume, as of September 30, 2026?
- Did the first wave of SWIFT corridors that 24/7 Wall St. expected in mid-2026 route payments through Thunes into On-Demand Liquidity? Nothing public says so as of September 30, 2026.
In plain English
Most talk about XRP being used for payments is about Ripple, the company, and its own payment service. I looked for anyone else using XRP to move money: independent money-transfer firms, exchanges, or shops. As of September 30, 2026, the public record shows none of those with a date and an amount. Even inside Ripple’s own products, a reporter found in July 2026 that most settlement uses Ripple’s dollar stablecoin rather than XRP. Finding no outside use does not prove it never happens, but none has been shown.
