Short answer
Ripple said on November 16, 2022 that it had added machine learning to intelligently manage liquidity. On March 3, 2026 it said its platform moves liquidity for the right price across assets, and on April 24, 2026 that it supports USDC, USDT and RLUSD. crypto.news reported on July 8, 2026 that Ripple’s settlement asset is predominantly RLUSD, not XRP.
The full answer
What does Ripple say its payment system optimises for?
Ripple describes the choice as a liquidity decision. In its November 16, 2022 release, Ripple said it had added capabilities to “intelligently manage liquidity using machine learning” for a variety of transaction types, and its engineering lead said Ripple’s machine learning and automation efforts “are focused on liquidity” [1]. The same release lists liquidity management solutions and lines of credit among the services RippleNet offers [1].
Ripple’s March 3, 2026 release describes the current platform in similar terms. Ripple says customers can collect, hold, exchange and pay out in fiat and stablecoins, and that its platform moves liquidity “to the right place, at the right time, and for the right price across assets” [2]. These are Ripple’s own descriptions. None of the sources held for this page publishes the rule that turns price, depth or timing into a choice of XRP, so this page reports what Ripple says the system aims for, not how it computes a route.
Which assets can a Ripple payment settle in?
Ripple lists several. In an April 24, 2026 post, Ripple said its platform supports USDC, USDT and RLUSD and processes settlement across stablecoins and fiat rails, adding that “different corridors, counterparties, and regulatory environments call for different assets” [3]. Ripple’s November 5, 2025 release described Ripple Payments as a cross-border platform “using Ripple USD (RLUSD) and XRP” [4].
Customer material shows XRP as one input among many. Ripple’s December 2, 2025 release on RedotPay says a user of RedotPay’s “Send Crypto, Receive NGN” feature sends XRP or another supported asset, including USDC, USDT, BTC and ETH, and receives Nigerian naira in a bank account [5]. The allaboutxrp partnerships guide says a current Ripple case study names both RLUSD and XRP as settlement assets for Bitso, and that “Ripple products can use fiat, stablecoins, XRP, or custody infrastructure” [7].
Taken together, Ripple’s March and April 2026 statements describe asset choice as a price-and-corridor decision. On that description, XRP is picked when it gives the better result in a corridor, not by default. For how XRP carries value once it is chosen, see how On-Demand Liquidity uses XRP.
How does this routing layer compare with pathfinding on the XRP Ledger?
The XRP Ledger has its own, documented rule. XRPL.org says auto-bridging uses XRP “when doing so is cheaper than trading directly,” and that an offer can combine direct and XRP-bridged offers to get the best total exchange rate [6]. XRPL.org also says Payment transactions do not use auto-bridging by default, though pathfinding can find paths with the same effect [6]. That rule governs trades on the ledger itself. Ripple’s product layer sits above it and also chooses among fiat rails and stablecoins that may never touch the ledger. The ledger side is covered in how XRP Ledger pathfinding routes payments.
When would a direct fiat or stablecoin route beat XRP?
A 24/7 Wall St. analysis dated April 1, 2026 says at least 30 of the 50+ banks named in Swift’s new consumer-payments framework have Ripple ties, but that most of those banks use RippleNet for messaging without touching XRP [9]. It says a shift to XRP-based ODL “depends on whether the cost savings of using XRP as a bridge asset outweigh the compliance burden of holding a digital asset on their balance sheets” [9]. That puts cost and compliance side by side as the test. Liquidity is the other half of the cost, which is why liquidity depth decides whether XRP wins a route. The case for skipping XRP altogether is set out in why an institution might choose not to use XRP.
Does XRP need to be the only bridge currency?
No. Both routing designs in the sources, XRPL auto-bridging [6] and Ripple’s multi-asset platform [2][3], treat XRP as one candidate that has to beat direct routes. Under either design, XRP can carry a share of flows without carrying all of them. The open question is the size of that share, not whether XRP is the sole bridge.
Does Ripple have a commercial reason to prefer RLUSD routes over XRP routes?
The strongest critique comes from crypto.news. Its July 8, 2026 analysis found that inside Ripple’s own product stack “the asset doing the settlement work is predominantly RLUSD,” not XRP [8]. It argues that Ripple “built RLUSD precisely to capture the settlement flow” that XRP’s volatility rules out, and that every institutional win running through RLUSD is a win for Ripple and the ledger “and only residually for the token” [8]. It concludes that the share of Ripple Prime’s $3 trillion that becomes XRP demand today is “a sliver” [8].
Ripple’s own releases fit that pattern in at least one corridor. Ripple’s June 9, 2026 release on Bitso’s MXNB stablecoin describes RLUSD and MXNB on the XRPL Permissioned DEX as liquidity for dollar-peso enterprise payments, and does not describe XRP in the settlement flow [10]. On the ledger, CCN, citing Blockworks, reported on August 20, 2026 that XRPL stablecoin transfer volume rose 208% to about $10 billion in Q2 2026, with RLUSD generating about $9 billion of it [11].
The same crypto.news piece records the bull reply: RLUSD adoption seeds the ledger with institutional liquidity that XRP-based collateral and bridging could later plug into, a claim whose first half is observable and whose second half “is not yet” [8].
From these sources, XRP’s routing share inside Ripple depends on beating RLUSD as well as fiat. None of the cited sources shows whether Ripple’s routing gives RLUSD any preference beyond price. Whether banks can avoid XRP entirely is covered in whether banks need XRP or only Ripple’s software.
What share of routes pick XRP?
As of September 30, 2026, I could not find any published statement from Ripple on how its payment system decides whether to route a payment through XRP. The allaboutxrp guide says there is no complete public list proving that every Ripple banking customer uses XRP [7]. The evidence on volume is gathered in how much of Ripple’s payment volume actually uses XRP.
What we know
- November 16, 2022: Ripple said it had added machine learning to intelligently manage liquidity for a variety of transaction types, and that its machine learning and automation work is focused on liquidity (Ripple release).
- November 5, 2025: Ripple described Ripple Payments as a cross-border platform using RLUSD and XRP, with total volume above $95 billion (Ripple release).
- March 3, 2026: Ripple said its platform lets customers collect, hold, exchange and pay out in fiat and stablecoins, and moves liquidity for the right price across assets (Ripple release).
- April 24, 2026: Ripple said its platform supports USDC, USDT and RLUSD, settles across stablecoins and fiat rails, and that different corridors, counterparties and regulatory environments call for different assets (Ripple post).
- July 8, 2026: crypto.news reported that inside Ripple’s own product stack the settlement asset is predominantly RLUSD, not XRP.
- Checked September 29, 2026: XRPL.org says on-ledger auto-bridging uses XRP only when that is cheaper than trading directly; Payment transactions do not use it by default.
What we reason Analysis
- This follows from Ripple’s March 2026 and April 2026 statements: Ripple describes asset choice as a price-and-corridor decision, so XRP is picked when it gives the better price in a corridor, not by default.
- This follows from the XRPL.org auto-bridging page and Ripple’s multi-asset platform description: in both designs XRP competes with direct routes, so XRP does not need to be the only bridge currency to be used.
- This follows from crypto.news (July 2026) and CCN/Blockworks (August 2026): RLUSD now does most settlement work in Ripple’s stack and on XRPL stablecoin volume, so XRP’s routing share depends on beating RLUSD, not only fiat.
What's still open
- As of September 30, 2026, no project source states Ripple’s routing rule, its weighting between XRP and RLUSD, or the share of Ripple Payments volume routed through XRP. Searched: I could not find an answer to this in Ripple releases from 2022 to 2026, XRPL.org, crypto.news, 24/7 Wall St. or allaboutxrp, as of October 2, 2026.
- Ripple’s Payments ODL documentation now describes the API steps: the sender requests a quote using the Create quote collection operation, may set quote_filter_types to “LIQUIDITY_WARNINGS” to receive only quotes from liquidity paths with sufficient balance, and then accepts a quote ID and submits the payment for settlement using the Settle payment operation. I could not find any dates for these documentation pages as of October 1, 2026.
- As of September 30, 2026, no project source states whether RLUSD reserves earn income for Ripple, so the page makes no claim about reserve income.
In plain English
Ripple runs a payment service that can move money using ordinary bank rails, several stablecoins, or XRP. Ripple says the service picks whichever asset gets the money to the right place for the right price, and it has used machine learning to manage this since 2022. Ripple does not publish how often XRP is the one chosen. Recent reporting says Ripple’s own dollar stablecoin, RLUSD, now does most of the settlement work in Ripple’s products.
