Short answer
Required liquidity is annual volume divided by how many times the liquidity turns over in a year. DefiLlama data to September 29, 2026 implies XRPL DEX pools turn over 60 to 72 times a year. At 50x to 75x, 1% of $150 trillion, the floor 24/7 Wall St. reported for Swift’s yearly volume (April 2026), would need $20 billion to $30 billion.

How do you turn a payment share into a liquidity figure?
The liquidity that must exist at any moment equals the yearly volume routed through it divided by how many times that liquidity is used in a year. A dollar of liquidity that settles a payment, is released and settles another is counted once in the stock and many times in the flow. So $1 billion turning 50 times a year supports $50 billion of annual volume, and at 75 times it supports $75 billion.
The same identity answers the question of whether $25 billion of annual activity needs $25 billion of capital. It does not. At 50x it needs about $500 million, and at 75x about $333 million. The error runs both ways: treating flow as stock inflates the capital needed, and treating a high turnover rate as permanent can understate it.
How was the 50-75x turnover measured, and over which windows?
DefiLlama’s XRPL DEX entry, checked September 29, 2026, showed $41.59 million of TVL, found by summing the reserves of all AMM pools on the XRP Ledger [1]. The same entry showed DEX volume of $9.66 million over 24 hours, $57.77 million over 7 days and $203.54 million over 30 days, counting all spot token swaps on the DEX [1]. DefiLlama also reported that TVL rose 11% over those 30 days [1].
Dividing volume by TVL gives 4.89x over 30 days, which annualises to about 60x. The 7-day window gives about 72x a year and the 24-hour window about 85x. A single day is the noisiest of the three.
An earlier window points lower. CoinDesk reported on March 13, 2026 that DeFiLlama showed XRPL TVL at $47.54 million and that daily volume ran between $4 million and $8 million [3]. If that volume is DEX volume, it implies 31x to 61x a year.
The 50x to 75x range used on this page sits inside the measured spread of 31x to 85x. Three things can push the true figure either way. TVL rose over the 30-day window, so dividing by the end value slightly understates turnover. Evernorth reported on September 2, 2026 that the order book made up 81% of XRPL DEX trading in Q2 2026, up from 54% a year earlier [2]. DefiLlama’s XRPL entry, checked September 29, 2026, defines its TVL as the sum of AMM pool reserves and its volume as all spot token swaps on the DEX, so if order-book fills are among those swaps, the ratio overstates the turnover of the pools alone. And the rate moves: Evernorth reported on September 2, 2026 that total trading in Q2 2026 was 16% below Q1 2026 [2].
What would 1%, 5%, 10% or 20% of cross-border flow need?
24/7 Wall St. reported on April 1, 2026 that Swift processes over $150 trillion in cross-border payments a year [4]. This page uses $150 trillion as the base; the page on how big the cross-border payments market is covers other estimates.
Analysis, on a $150 trillion base:
| Share | Annual volume | Liquidity at 50x | Liquidity at 75x |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1% | $1.5 trillion | $30 billion | $20 billion |
| 5% | $7.5 trillion | $150 billion | $100 billion |
| 10% | $15 trillion | $300 billion | $200 billion |
| 20% | $30 trillion | $600 billion | $400 billion |
The widely repeated $25 billion estimate for 1% is the arithmetic of $1.9 trillion at 76x. The arithmetic holds; the inputs are an unverified base and a turnover rate measured on AMM pools, and it assumes the stock sits in one dedicated pool rather than being shared across uses. How long the ledger would take to reach such levels is covered on the XRPL liquidity growth timelines page.
How does today’s XRP liquidity compare with these figures?
$20 billion to $30 billion is about 480 to 720 times the $41.59 million of AMM pool value DefiLlama showed on September 29, 2026 [1]. Annualised, the 30-day DEX volume is about $2.48 billion. DefiLlama’s TVL counts only AMM pools, so it excludes order-book and off-ledger XRP liquidity; how deep XRP’s market liquidity is looks at those.
Does a short holding time mean little XRP is needed?
CoinDesk wrote on March 13, 2026 that a payment using XRP for three seconds to settle a cross-border transaction does not generate the same buy pressure as staking ETH for months [3].
A short holding time is what a high turnover rate measures, so it does reduce the stock needed per dollar of flow. It does not make the stock small at scale. At 75x, 1% of the $150 trillion base still needs $20 billion held ready. The formula does not say who holds that stock; market makers or payment providers could hold it rather than the banks sending payments.
Is turnover the same as leverage?
No. Turnover uses the same capital again after each settlement releases it, with no debt involved. The figures on this page assume no borrowing. Whether an XRP liquidity multiplier is just leverage is treated separately.
What is the strongest evidence against reading these figures as XRP demand?
Most bank payment flow does not touch XRP. 24/7 Wall St. reported on April 1, 2026 that only around 40% of RippleNet partners use On-Demand Liquidity, the product that requires XRP as a bridge asset, and that Swift’s new framework does not require XRP at any point in the payment flow [4]. CoinDesk wrote on March 13, 2026 that XRPL activity is increasingly driven by RLUSD and tokenized assets that flow through XRP as a bridge but do not create sustained demand for the token [3].
The table shows what a share would need if it were routed through XRP. It says nothing about whether it will be. How much of Ripple’s payment volume actually uses XRP is the measured counterweight to these scenarios.
Does this mean XRP will capture any of these shares?
The table’s shares of 1%, 5%, 10% and 20% are illustrative sizing inputs chosen for this page, not forecasts. The table is a sizing tool that can be checked against measured turnover and measured routed volume. Turning it into a valuation raises further questions, covered in how to build an XRP capacity model that is not a price target.

What we reason Analysis
- Required working liquidity equals annual routed volume divided by annual turnover. This is a stock-and-flow identity, not a forecast.
- This follows from DefiLlama’s September 29, 2026 XRPL DEX figures: 30-day volume over TVL is 4.89x, about 60x a year; the 7-day window gives about 72x a year; the 24-hour window gives about 85x a year.
- This follows from CoinDesk’s March 13, 2026 figures, if the $4 million to $8 million daily volume it cited is DEX volume: 31x to 61x a year.
- A planning range of 50x to 75x sits inside the spread of measured windows (31x to 85x). It is a calibration from AMM pool data, not a measure of institutional bridge liquidity.
- On a $150 trillion base (the floor 24/7 Wall St. reported for Swift), 1% needs $20 billion to $30 billion, 5% needs $100 billion to $150 billion, 10% needs $200 billion to $300 billion and 20% needs $400 billion to $600 billion at 75x to 50x.
- This follows from DefiLlama’s $41.59 million TVL: $20 billion to $30 billion is about 480 to 720 times the AMM pool value on September 29, 2026.
- The $25 billion figure for 1% is the arithmetic of $1.9 trillion at 76x. Its base ($190 trillion) is not verified in this project’s sources, and it treats the stock as one dedicated pool.
What's still open
- DefiLlama’s XRPL DEX page defines DEX volume as the volume of all spot token swaps on the DEX, and its methodology describes only AMM pools on the XRP Ledger, finding all AMM pools, checking their reserves, and summing their TVL in XRP; as of October 2, 2026, I could not find any statement on the page saying whether XRPL order-book fills are included in that volume. If they are, volume over AMM-only TVL overstates turnover of all working liquidity.
- As of September 30, 2026, I could not find any source reporting the turnover of Ripple’s On-Demand Liquidity inventory or of market-maker XRP used for payments.
- Is the $190 trillion cross-border figure attributed to McKinsey right? It remains unverified against the original source as of September 30, 2026.
- Has anyone published a projection that XRP will capture a share of cross-border payments? None was found as of September 30, 2026.
In plain English
Money used to settle payments can be used again and again, so the amount that must sit ready is much smaller than the total that flows through in a year. On the XRP Ledger’s trading pools, recent data shows that money being used about 60 to 72 times a year. At that pace, handling 1% of the payments Swift carries would need about $20 billion to $30 billion ready at any moment, hundreds of times what those pools held in late September 2026. None of this shows that XRP will win any of that business.
