Total value locked (TVL)
Plain definition. Total value locked (TVL) is the total value of digital assets currently deposited, or “locked,” in a DeFi protocol, a platform or a whole blockchain ecosystem, usually measured in US dollars.
Technical definition. CoinMarketCap’s glossary calculates TVL by adding up the total market value of all cryptoassets locked in a protocol’s smart contracts at current market prices, using the formula TVL = Sum of (Number of Tokens Locked × Current Price Per Token). These assets are usually locked through staking, supplying liquidity to trading pools, lending or yield farming. The figure changes daily with user deposits and withdrawals, price changes in the underlying assets, and changes in rewards or incentive structures.
