What's the difference between Ripple, XRP and the XRP Ledger?
Also asked as: “Is XRP the same as Ripple?” · “Who created XRP and the XRP Ledger?”

Short answer
XRP is the digital asset built into the XRP Ledger. The XRP Ledger is a public blockchain that launched in June 2012 and is kept in agreement by validators run by many parties. Ripple is a privately held company that holds XRP, builds products, and ran one of 35 recommended validators in July 2023, according to XRPL.org.
The full answer
What is each of the three?
XRP is a digital asset. XRPL.org, the documentation site for the ledger, describes it as “native to the XRP Ledger”, which it calls “an open-source, permissionless and decentralized blockchain” [1]. The ledger’s technical documentation says XRP “has no issuer”, while every other asset on the ledger is a token issued by some account [13].
The XRP Ledger is that blockchain: a shared record of accounts and payments kept on many computers. It first launched in June 2012 [2]. Each server chooses a set of validators it trusts, and the network confirms new transactions and ledger versions through their agreement, without mining [15].
Ripple is a privately held company; its November 5, 2025 press release carries a San Francisco dateline [7], and its president has said it has “no plans for an IPO”, as reported by Yahoo Finance in August 2026 [14]. XRPL.org describes Ripple as a technology company and says “XRP is a digital asset independent of this” [1]. Ripple describes itself as “a holder of and one of many developers building on and contributing to XRP” [6].
Who created XRP and the XRP Ledger?
XRPL.org says David Schwartz, Jed McCaleb and Arthur Britto began developing the ledger in 2011, and that it launched in June 2012 [2][3]. At creation there were 100 billion XRP [3]. In September 2012, McCaleb and Britto, together with Chris Larsen, formed the company now called Ripple. It was first named NewCoin, then OpenCoin [2]. XRPL.org says they gave the company 80 billion XRP in exchange for developing on the ledger [3]. The federal court in the SEC’s case against Ripple recorded the same split: the founders kept 20 billion, including 9 billion for Larsen, and provided 80 billion to Ripple [4].
The company later renamed itself Ripple Labs and then Ripple [2]. The page on what “XRP” stands for traces the naming.
How much XRP does Ripple still hold, and how is it released?
Ripple says “the majority of Ripple’s XRP supply is in escrow” [6]. It reports its holdings on the last day of each quarter: as of June 30, 2026, Ripple said it held 37,656,053,914 XRP, of which 32,600,000,000 was in escrow [6]. XRPL.org says Ripple locked 55 billion XRP, 55% of the total possible supply, into a series of escrows on the ledger [1]. crypto.news reported on September 1, 2026 that about 31.28 billion XRP remained in on-ledger escrow after the September release, citing an independent tracker, and wrote that “an escrow unlock makes XRP available to Ripple but does not prove any market sale” [10]. The monthly release schedule is covered in how XRP escrow works.
Does running one validator give Ripple control over the ledger?
XRPL.org’s FAQ answers “No, Ripple does not own or control the XRP Ledger or XRP Ledger network” and says Ripple’s rights “are the same as those of other contributors” [5]. The same FAQ says that, as of July 2023, Ripple ran 1 of the 35 validators on the default recommended list; it also counts more than 150 validators on the network, without a date for that figure [5]. The XRP Ledger Foundation publishes a default UNL (dUNL), a list of vetted, independent node operators [12].
The strongest counterpoint concerns that recommended list, not Ripple’s single validator. According to xora.finance, the official xrpld example configuration names two list publishers, Ripple and the XRP Ledger Foundation, and its dated snapshot of August 24, 2026 found both default publisher lists contained the same 35 validator keys [11]. The arguments on both sides are set out in does Ripple control XRP.
Which Ripple products use XRP and which don’t?
Ripple says its solutions “use XRP, RLUSD, and other digital assets” [6]. Its November 2025 announcement lists Ripple Payments, Ripple Custody and the Ripple Prime brokerage, and says Ripple’s stablecoin RLUSD and XRP “are leveraged across these solutions” [7]. The Ripple Payments product page lets customers “pay in, pay out, and settle in RLUSD, USDC, USDT, or fiat”, and describes the sender’s provider converting money “into a digital asset like XRP or a stablecoin like RLUSD” [9]. On Ripple’s own description, XRP is one option in Ripple Payments rather than a requirement; does Ripple Payments require XRP goes through them one by one.
Is owning XRP the same as owning part of Ripple?
No. Ripple’s owners hold company shares. In November 2025 Ripple said it had raised $500 million from outside investors at a $40 billion valuation and had repurchased more than 25% of its outstanding shares in recent years [7]. In March 2026 CoinDesk, citing Bloomberg, reported that Ripple began buying back up to $750 million of shares from investors and employees at about $50 billion [8]. Neither report describes any role for XRP holders in those transactions. The page is buying XRP the same as owning part of Ripple covers what an XRP holder does and does not get.
Does Ripple’s success flow through to XRP holders?
The case for not treating the three as fully separate rests on this link. Ripple held about 37.66 billion XRP on its own June 2026 report [6] and uses XRP in some products [7], so the company and XRP holders share some interests. In July 2017, Schwartz, then Ripple’s chief cryptographer, wrote on Reddit that “Ripple’s interest[s] closely (but, yes, not perfectly) align with those of other XRP holders”, a post the court quoted in its 2023 ruling [4]. How much of Ripple’s growth reaches XRP, and through which channels, is examined in does Ripple’s success lift XRP.
What we know
- June 2012: the XRP Ledger first launched, built by David Schwartz, Jed McCaleb and Arthur Britto (XRPL.org).
- September 2012: McCaleb and Britto, with Chris Larsen, formed the company now called Ripple (then OpenCoin) and gave it 80 billion of the 100 billion XRP created (XRPL.org). The founders kept 20 billion, including 9 billion for Larsen (SEC v. Ripple order, July 13, 2023).
- July 2023: Ripple ran 1 of the 35 validators on the default recommended list (XRPL.org FAQ). The same FAQ, checked September 29, 2026, counts more than 150 validators on the network.
- Ripple announced a $500 million investment at a $40 billion valuation on November 5, 2025, and said it had bought back more than 25% of its shares in recent years (Ripple).
- In a March 11, 2026 report citing Bloomberg, CoinDesk described a buyback of up to $750 million of Ripple shares from investors and employees at about $50 billion.
- September 1, 2026: about 31.28 billion XRP remained in on-ledger escrow after that month’s release, according to an independent tracker cited by crypto.news.
- June 30, 2026: Ripple reported holding 37,656,053,914 XRP, of which 32,600,000,000 was in escrow (Ripple’s XRP page, checked September 29, 2026).
- September 29, 2026: Ripple’s payments product page listed RLUSD, USDC, USDT or ordinary currencies as settlement assets and described XRP as one digital asset, alongside RLUSD, that can carry the value (Ripple).
- The tracking site xrp-insights.com reported on October 2, 2026 that Ripple holds about 35.72 billion XRP, made up of 30.98 billion XRP locked in on-ledger escrow (31.0 percent of total supply) and 4.74 billion XRP in operational wallets, and it said these figures come from on-chain wallet tracking, not company press releases. Ripple’s own figure for after June 30, 2026 was still unpublished as of September 29, 2026, so no company-reported holding for that period is public.
What we reason Analysis
- Holding XRP and owning Ripple are separate things: Ripple’s equity changes hands in tender offers among investors and employees, while XRP moves on a public ledger. This follows from Ripple’s November 2025 release and the March 2026 buyback report.
- Ripple’s commercial results reach XRP only through indirect channels, such as its use of XRP in some products and the size of its own XRP holding. This follows from Ripple’s description of its products and its escrow disclosures.
- Running one validator does not settle the question of influence, because Ripple also publishes a recommended validator list that matched the XRP Ledger Foundation’s in August 2026. This follows from the XRPL.org FAQ and the xora.finance snapshot.
What's still open
- How many validators Ripple itself operates today. XRPL.org’s figure is dated July 2023; searched xrpscan (would not load) and 2026 validator reports (no operator split) on September 29, 2026.
In plain English
The XRP Ledger is a shared record book, run on many computers, where a kind of digital money called XRP lives and moves. Ripple is a company that received most of the XRP when it started and builds financial products for businesses. Buying XRP does not make you a part-owner of Ripple. On the ledger, Ripple is one participant among many.
