Short answer
Watch whether use of the XRP Ledger turns into demand for XRP itself. DefiLlama showed $1.213 billion of stablecoins on the ledger but $46.56 million in DeFi on September 29, 2026. Track ETF flows, XRP-paired liquidity, the lending vote and supply alongside those, and judge Ripple announcements by whether they need XRP.

Why look past the daily price?
XRP closed the second quarter of 2026 at $1.04, down 20% from the end of the first quarter, CCN reported on August 20, 2026 [1]. In the same quarter, stablecoin supply native to the XRP Ledger rose 195% to $825.5 million, according to Blockworks’ State of XRP report as cited by CCN [1]. The two moved in opposite directions. CCN’s own summary was that growth in the ledger does not automatically produce equivalent appreciation in the token [1].
Price is set by trading in the market, as Analytics Insight put it on September 25, 2026 [2]. I watch the figures below for a narrower reason. They show whether the activity that could create demand for XRP is growing, which is a separate question from what drives XRP’s price on a given day.
Which numbers show whether the ledger is being used?
Stablecoins are the largest figure. DefiLlama’s XRPL page showed $1.213 billion in stablecoins on September 29, 2026, with RLUSD making up 92.46% of it [3]. The same page showed $46.56 million locked in DeFi and $57.99 million of DEX volume over the previous seven days [3]. Most of that DeFi value sits in the ledger’s own exchange: DefiLlama’s XRPL DEX page put the reserves of all AMM pools on the ledger at $41.59 million on September 29, 2026 [9].
Liquidity in XRP itself is smaller again. On September 12, 2026, CryptoSlate reported that an XRP/RLUSD AMM pool tracked by XRPL.to held about $4.6 million across both sides, roughly 0.41% of DefiLlama’s XRPL stablecoin total [4]. Evernorth said in its report of September 2, 2026 that trading on the ledger’s DEX ran at 4.42 million XRP a day in the second quarter, up about 20% year on year [5]. Evernorth also notes that this counts each swap gross of direction, so it measures turnover rather than accumulation [5].
Tokenized assets need a careful read. CCN, citing Blockworks, reported a record $4.46 billion of tokenized real-world assets on the ledger for the second quarter of 2026, while the freely transferable share fell 5% to $386.1 million [1]. Messari’s first-quarter 2026 report, as covered by crypto.news, tied XRP to network use through transaction fees, account reserves, liquidity, asset ownership and bridging across currencies [6]. The page on measuring how much XRP is actually used separates those channels.
Supply sits on the other side of the ledger. How Ripple’s locked XRP is released is covered on how the XRP escrow works, and tradable supply on how much XRP is available.
Messari, as reported by crypto.news in its coverage of Messari’s Q1 2026 report, noted that XRP remains tied to network use through transaction fees, account reserves, liquidity, asset ownership and bridging across currencies [6].
Evernorth reported that DEX trading ran at 4.42 million XRP a day in Q2 2026, up about 20% year over year, with the order book at 81% of DEX trading [5].
Evernorth also reported that over the six quarters to Q2 2026, XRP-paired pools grew 26% while trading through those pools fell 74% [5].
What do ETF flows and holdings show?
US spot XRP ETFs took in $273 million in the second quarter of 2026, with net inflows in all three months, Evernorth reported [5]. Its SoSoValue figures give $81.59 million in April, $131.94 million in May and $59.46 million in June [5]. CCN reported that global XRP exchange-traded products drew $253.6 million of net inflows in the quarter, while their assets under management fell 17% to $1.99 billion because of the price decline [1]. Flows and assets measure different things: money came in while the dollar value held went down with the price.
Holdings as a share of supply are the other ETF figure. Messari’s first-quarter 2026 report, as covered by crypto.news, said US spot XRP ETFs ended the first quarter holding 775.4 million XRP, 1.26% of circulating supply and up 1.9% from the previous quarter [6].
By SoSoValue’s monthly totals, as listed by Evernorth, that was $81.59 million in April, $131.94 million in May and $59.46 million in June 2026 [5].
Where does the XRP Ledger’s lending protocol stand?
CCN described a proposed native lending protocol that would support fixed-term loans and single-asset vaults, potentially expanding XRP’s use in credit, collateral and yield products [1]. Evernorth said both amendments were in validator voting at the end of the second quarter and had not activated [5]. A September 17, 2026 snapshot of XRPL Foundation validator-history data showed 16 of 35 trusted validators supporting SingleAssetVault and 13 of 35 supporting LendingProtocol, crypto.news reported [7]. Activation needs more than 80% support from trusted validators, held for two continuous weeks [7]. crypto.news added that these counts are time-sensitive and come from an independent tracker [7].
How the protocol would work is covered in how the XRP Ledger’s native lending protocol works.
How do I tell whether a Ripple announcement adds demand for XRP?
My test is whether the product needs XRP to work, or raises the amount of XRP it uses. Routing is the reason. CryptoSlate wrote on September 12, 2026 that the ledger can send issued-token trades through XRP when that bridge offers better pricing, while direct routes can bypass it [4]. A new stablecoin or bank partner can therefore grow the ledger without moving value through XRP. The page on whether Ripple partnerships mean XRP demand applies this to specific deals.
Which XRP numbers can be measured in public, and which can’t?
Datasets on stablecoin supply, turnover, pool reserves, DEX volume and payment volume are published. CryptoSlate reported on September 12, 2026 that the available datasets report supply, turnover and pool reserves but not the share of flow that actually uses XRP. CryptoSlate noted on September 12, 2026 that available datasets report supply, turnover and pool reserves, but not the share of flow that actually uses XRP or how long liquidity providers keep it [4]. Evernorth points out that cross-network figures are in US dollars while XRP’s own measures are in XRP, and the two are not directly comparable [5].
Where can each of these numbers be checked, and how often are they updated?
| Measure | Where it is published | How it is reported |
|---|---|---|
| Stablecoins, DeFi value and DEX volume on the ledger | DefiLlama XRPL chain page [3] | 24-hour and seven-day figures |
| XRP/RLUSD pool reserves | XRPL.to, as reported by CryptoSlate [4] | a snapshot at one ledger |
| US spot XRP ETF flows | SoSoValue, Total XRP Spot ETF History, via Evernorth [5] | daily net flows |
| XRP trading volume, accounts transacting, new wallets | Evernorth XRPL report, rebuilt from Dune’s ledger tables [5] | the same six measures every quarter |
| Stablecoin supply, tokenized assets, network activity | Blockworks State of XRP (second quarter 2026) [1]; Messari (first quarter 2026) [6] | reports covering one quarter |
| Stablecoin transfer volume | RWA.xyz, as reported by The Crypto Basic [8] | trailing 30 days |
| Lending and vault votes | XRPL Foundation validator-history data, via crypto.news [7] | time-sensitive counts |
The Crypto Basic, citing RWA.xyz, reported on July 30, 2026 that stablecoin transfer volume on the ledger rose 10.8% over 30 days to $4.28 billion [8].
What would mark a change, and how far off is it?
I use four working markers, reached at the same time: XRPL stablecoins near $5 billion, XRP/RLUSD liquidity of $250 million or more, the native lending protocol activated and holding meaningful balances, and US spot ETF holdings at several percent of circulating supply. They are reference points I chose, not forecasts. The latest public readings are $1.213 billion of stablecoins on September 29, 2026 (DefiLlama) [3] and about $4.6 million in one XRP/RLUSD pool on September 12, 2026 (CryptoSlate) [4]. For the other two, crypto.news counted 13 of 35 trusted validators supporting the lending protocol on September 17, 2026 [7], and Messari put US spot ETF holdings at 1.26% of circulating supply at the end of the first quarter of 2026, as reported by crypto.news [6]. Current depth is tracked on how deep XRP/RLUSD liquidity is. The checks I would apply over the next year are on what would show the thesis working, and a model built on these inputs is on building a capacity model that isn’t a price target.
What is the case against reading these numbers as good news for XRP?
Several of the figures fell. In the second quarter of 2026, average daily active addresses declined 11%, payment volume fell 27% and DEX volume dropped 36%, CCN reported [1]. Fees barely touch supply: CCN said only about 40,600 XRP were burned that quarter, so billions of dollars can move across the ledger without creating substantial fee demand [1]. Its conclusion was that adoption of the ledger and appreciation of its token remain two separate stories [1]. CryptoSlate reached a similar view on September 12, 2026, calling the stablecoin base an opportunity for XRP liquidity rather than a confirmed source of sustained token demand [4]. The full critique is on why XRP’s price isn’t rising with adoption.
What we know
- XRP closed the second quarter of 2026 at $1.04, down 20% from the end of the first quarter, while XRPL-native stablecoin supply rose 195% to $825.5 million, CCN reported on August 20, 2026, citing Blockworks.
- DefiLlama’s XRPL page showed $1.213 billion in stablecoins (RLUSD 92.46%), $46.56 million in DeFi and $57.99 million of seven-day DEX volume on September 29, 2026.
- CryptoSlate reported on September 12, 2026 that an XRP/RLUSD AMM pool tracked by XRPL.to held about $4.6 million across both sides.
- US spot XRP ETFs took in $273 million in the second quarter of 2026, with net inflows in all three months, Evernorth reported on September 2, 2026, citing SoSoValue.
- US spot XRP ETFs held 775.4 million XRP at the end of the first quarter of 2026, 1.26% of circulating supply, according to Messari as reported by crypto.news.
- On September 17, 2026, 16 of 35 trusted validators supported SingleAssetVault and 13 of 35 supported LendingProtocol; activation needs more than 80% support for two continuous weeks (crypto.news, September 18, 2026).
- CryptoSlate wrote on September 12, 2026 that available datasets report supply, turnover and pool reserves, but not the share of flow that uses XRP.
- Evernorth reported (September 2, 2026) XRPL DEX trading of 4.42 million XRP a day in Q2 2026, up about 20% year over year, and XRP-paired pools up 26% over six quarters while trading through them fell 74%.
What we reason Analysis
- The stablecoin base on the ledger grew about 47% between June 30, 2026 (Blockworks, $825.5 million) and September 29, 2026 (DefiLlama, $1.213 billion), while the XRP/RLUSD pool CryptoSlate measured on September 12 held about $4.6 million. The gap between dollars on the ledger and XRP committed to trade against them is the one number here that most directly tests whether ledger growth reaches XRP.
- My working markers, carried over from the research conversation, are XRPL stablecoins near $5 billion, XRP/RLUSD liquidity of $250 million or more, the native lending protocol activated and holding meaningful balances, and US spot ETF holdings at several percent of circulating supply, reached together. Against DefiLlama’s September 29 figure the first is about 4.1 times away; against CryptoSlate’s September 12 pool figure the second is about 54 times away. Lending had 13 of 35 trusted validators on crypto.news’s September 17, 2026 count, and Messari put ETF holdings at 1.26% of circulating supply at the end of the first quarter of 2026, as reported by crypto.news. These are reference points, not forecasts.
- A Ripple announcement adds to XRP demand only if the product needs XRP or raises the XRP it uses. CryptoSlate’s description of routing, where direct issued-token pairs can bypass XRP, and CCN’s point that ledger growth does not automatically lift the token both support applying that test.
- ETF flows matter more as a run of months than as a single print. Evernorth’s SoSoValue figures show net inflows in each month of the second quarter of 2026, while CCN reported global XRP product assets falling 17% in the same quarter, so dollar assets mostly track price and flows are the cleaner demand signal.
- Activation of the lending protocol needs more than 80% of 35 trusted validators, which means at least 29. By crypto.news’s September 17, 2026 count, it had 13.
What's still open
- The datasets CryptoSlate reviewed on September 12, 2026 report supply, turnover and pool reserves, but not the share of payment flow that uses XRP; whether any public dataset reports that share is not established as of October 1, 2026.
- When, or whether, the XRP Ledger lending protocol activates on mainnet is not known as of October 1, 2026.
- Whether the stablecoin growth seen between June and September 2026 continues into the fourth quarter is not known as of October 1, 2026.
- Growth on the XRP Ledger does not automatically lift XRP’s price, and no public source establishes otherwise as of October 1, 2026. Yahoo Finance noted that network growth does not automatically produce equivalent appreciation in XRP, and reported that average daily active addresses on the ledger declined 11%, payment volume fell 27% and decentralized exchange volume dropped 36%.
In plain English
Yahoo Finance reported that in the second quarter, average daily active addresses on the XRP Ledger declined 11%, payment volume fell 27% and decentralized exchange volume dropped 36%, and wrote that adoption of the ledger and appreciation of its native token remain two separate stories. Instead of the price, this page follows a few numbers that show whether people and firms are using the network and XRP. The biggest unknowns are the share of stablecoin flow that actually uses XRP and how long liquidity providers retain it; CryptoSlate wrote on September 12, 2026 that the available datasets report supply, turnover and pool reserves but not those two measures, and that XRP-linked pools and order books would need to deepen alongside stablecoin turnover. The page also follows money going into XRP funds and a vote on a new lending feature. None of these numbers sets the price. Some important ones, such as how many payments actually use XRP, were not reported in the datasets CryptoSlate reviewed for its September 12, 2026 article.
