Short answer
Yes, AI agents can pay in XRP on the XRP Ledger today, at a small and early scale. Ripple released an XRPL AI starter kit on June 9, 2026, with x402 payments in XRP and RLUSD. The XRP Ledger Foundation said agents passed 1 million x402 payments on July 8, 2026; xrpl.fi reports each is a fraction of a cent.
The full answer
An AI agent is software that acts on its own, for example calling a paid data service when it needs an answer. x402 is a way for such software to pay inside a normal web request: the service replies with a price, the agent pays on a blockchain, and the service delivers. XRPL.org describes it as “an open protocol for HTTP-native machine-to-machine payments”.[2]
What is Ripple’s XRPL AI Starter Kit?
A set of developer tools that Ripple released on June 9, 2026. Ripple wrote that the launch “includes support for X402-powered payments using XRP and Ripple USD (RLUSD), enabling AI agents to transact for APIs, compute, and other digital services”.[1] The first phase is a documentation server that AI coding tools can query, wallet and payment “skills” for Claude, and tutorials.[1] Ripple says a developer can “run a confirmed payment on testnet in under 30 minutes”, on the test network rather than with real money.[1] The x402 support came from a partner: “Thanks to a contribution from our partners at t54 , XRPL is now a supported chain in the X402 protocol”.[1]
On the XRP Ledger, an x402 payment involves three parties: the service being paid, the paying agent, and a checking service called a facilitator.[2] XRPL.org says t54 runs a main-network facilitator “listed as a production option in x402’s official facilitator directory”.[2]
Who else is behind x402?
x402 was started at Coinbase. On July 14, 2026 the Linux Foundation announced the “operational launch of the x402 Foundation and the completed contribution of the x402 protocol by Coinbase”, with 40 member organizations.[3] Its premier members include Ripple, Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Circle and Coinbase.[3]
Has anyone deployed the starter kit in production since June 2026?
The XRP Ledger Foundation posted on July 8, 2026: “We just surpassed 1,000,000 agentic payments via x402 on the $XRP Ledger.”[4] crypto.news reported the same day that t54 had launched an XRPL AI Hub for developers, agents and payment services.[4] The site xrpl.fi publishes hourly rates from its own scans of XRP Ledger x402 payments. It says “the facilitator operator has cited nearly one million XRPL agent transactions” but that “we cannot audit their cumulative total”.[5] Its page also gives two different hourly rates, about 28,300 and “several hundred to over a thousand per hour”,[5] so the rate as of September 29, 2026 is not known. This site has not found a named business using the starter kit in production; Ripple’s launch announcement of June 9, 2026 describes the tools and x402 support but is not evidence of production use.
How much x402 machine-payment volume exists, and on which chains?
The published measures disagree, and most of the measured value is in USDC on other chains. CoinDesk reported $24 million over 30 days in July 2026, Bitquery counted $2.6 billion in August 2026, and TRM Labs found $52.7 million in total since May 2025. CoinDesk’s July 15, 2026 report said x402 “processed about 75 million transactions totaling $24 million over the past 30 days”, an average of about 32 cents.[7] The x402 site still showed 75.41 million transactions and $24.24 million for its last 30 days when read on September 29, 2026,[6] the same figures as in July, so that counter may not have been updated. xrpl.fi says “most x402 volume to date has settled on other chains, primarily in USDC on Base and Solana”.[5]
How much of it is agents is disputed. Bitquery counted 18.3 million payments worth $2.6 billion in August 2026 on five of the six chains it counted, but “almost nine tenths of it is a single bridging contract on Arbitrum”, and agents on Base and Polygon “moved about $57,000 between them”.[8] TRM Labs found about $52.7 million settled since May 2025 on Base, Solana and Polygon, 99.6% of it in USDC, and estimated that 0.6% to 7.5% of screened commerce came from agents.[9] In March 2026 CoinDesk reported about $28,000 a day of x402 volume, much of it tests and “gamed” transactions.[10] No cited study names the XRP Ledger among the chains it measured, and no dollar total for XRP Ledger x402 payments was found.
Are XRP Ledger fees and speed suited to micro-payments?
On cost and speed, yes. XRPL.org says transactions settle in 3-5 seconds for fractions of a cent.[12] The current minimum fee for a standard transaction is 10 drops, 0.00001 XRP, and it is destroyed rather than paid to anyone; XRPL.org says it sometimes increases with load.[11] Each account must also hold a base reserve of 1 XRP.[13] The details are on XRP transaction cost and speed.
Would agents pay in XRP or in stablecoins?
XRPL.org describes x402 as an open protocol for HTTP-native machine-to-machine payments in which a service states its payment requirements, a client pays on-chain, and the service delivers the resource. Ripple said on June 9, 2026 that its XRPL AI Starter Kit includes support for x402 payments using XRP and Ripple USD (RLUSD).[14] The size of any RLUSD or XRP flow is not established by the sources found. Whether stablecoins take over XRP’s payment role is on whether stablecoins will replace XRP, and the case for USDC as the bridge instead is on XRP as a bridge versus USDC.
Should machine payments add value to XRP today?
Not by any measure found. Payments of fractions of a cent burn at least 10 drops each at the current minimum, and a new account locks 1 XRP.[11][13] By our arithmetic from those XRPL.org figures, one million payments at 10 drops burn about 10 XRP. The effect would be larger only if agents held working balances of XRP, and none of the sources cited here measures such balances. What does move XRP’s price is on what drives the XRP price, and which XRP Ledger features are live or coming is on XRP Ledger features, live and coming.

What we reason Analysis
- Machine payments add almost nothing to XRP demand today: each payment is a fraction of a cent and burns the current minimum fee of 10 drops of XRP, which sometimes rises with load. This follows from xrpl.fi and XRPL.org.
- At 10 drops each, one million payments burn about 10 XRP. Our arithmetic from XRPL.org’s current minimum fee (1,000,000 x 0.00001 XRP). The effect would be larger only if agents held working balances of XRP, and no cited source measures such balances.
- Each new agent account locks 1 XRP as a reserve, so even a million new agent accounts would lock about 1 million XRP. Our calculation from XRPL.org’s reserve rule; how many XRPL x402 payer accounts exist was not found.
- In the x402 studies found, dollar stablecoins are the payment asset; XRP competes with RLUSD on its own ledger and with USDC elsewhere. This follows from TRM Labs’ study of Base, Solana and Polygon and Ripple’s starter kit post.
What's still open
- Dollar value of x402 payments on the XRP Ledger: no audited figure found as of September 29, 2026.
- Named businesses using the starter kit in production: none found in Ripple’s, XRPL.org’s or t54’s pages as of September 29, 2026.
- Mastercard’s June 2026 agent-payments programme and Ripple’s role in it: the press releases could not be fetched on September 29, 2026, so it is left out here.
In plain English
Some software programs, called AI agents, can now pay small amounts on their own, for example to use a data service. Since June 2026 they can do this on the XRP Ledger with XRP or Ripple’s dollar coin, using a shared method called x402. The payments are tiny, often a fraction of a cent, and on the networks studied most of the money moved this way is in dollar stablecoins, not XRP. It is a real use at an early stage.
