What was the JPMorgan, Mastercard and Ondo tokenized Treasury redemption on XRPL?
Company-reported Published 4 min read
Short answer
On 6 May 2026, Ondo Finance announced that it, Kinexys by J.P. Morgan, Mastercard and Ripple completed a pilot redemption of Ondo’s tokenized Treasury fund OUSG. Ripple redeemed OUSG on the XRP Ledger, which the companies said processed that leg in under five seconds, and Kinexys paid US dollars to Ripple’s Singapore bank account.

What happened in the transaction?
On 6 May 2026, Ondo Finance announced the completion of what it called the first near real-time cross-border, cross-bank redemption of a tokenized U.S. Treasury fund [1]. Ondo ran it as a pilot with Kinexys by J.P. Morgan, Mastercard and Ripple [1]. The release describes three steps:
- Ripple redeemed a portion of its holdings of OUSG, the Ondo Short-Term U.S. Government Treasuries fund token, on the XRP Ledger [1].
- Ondo processed the redemption and initiated a fiat payout instruction via the Mastercard MTN, which routed the instruction to Kinexys [1].
- Kinexys debited Ondo’s Blockchain Deposit Account and settled U.S. dollar proceeds to Ripple’s bank account in Singapore through its correspondent banking network [1].
According to the companies, the XRP Ledger processed the asset leg in under five seconds [1]. The release says one leg ran on a public blockchain and the other settled on bank infrastructure, and that the redemption was executed outside traditional cut-off windows [1]. A 10 June 2026 Yahoo Finance article by Sam Daodu reported that the redemption settled in under five seconds, and said such a trade normally takes one to three business days [2].
Why did the companies call it a first?
Ondo’s release says redemption infrastructure for tokenized assets has largely depended on wire systems, manual processes and limited operating hours [1]. Ondo said the pilot establishes a framework for 24/7, near real-time cross-border settlement across global banks for tokenized asset redemption [1]. Zack Chestnut of Kinexys called it an important step towards a framework for institutional-scale tokenized asset markets [1]. These are the participants’ own descriptions of their own pilot.
Two limits come from the same release. OUSG is available only to accredited investors and qualified purchasers [1]. Ondo also says the architecture is designed to support redemptions from any public blockchain on which OUSG is issued, including XRPL [1], so the design does not depend on the XRP Ledger. The release names Ripple as the redeeming party; for the separate question of what Ripple’s treasury-management product does, see What is Ripple Treasury, and how big is it?.
Did XRP play any role in the transaction?
The release describes Kinexys debiting Ondo’s Blockchain Deposit Account and settling U.S. dollar proceeds to Ripple’s bank account in Singapore via its correspondent banking network [1]. Yahoo Finance said RLUSD did the bridging and the banks handled the cash leg [2], and crypto.news said the instrument that carried the money was RLUSD [3]. The release describes dollar proceeds settled by Kinexys through correspondent banking, while the secondary reports name RLUSD, so which instrument carried the cash is listed under what is not yet known.
This follows from CCN’s reported $0.00024 average transaction cost, the fee is a negligible amount. CCN reported an average XRP Ledger transaction cost of $0.00024 during the quarter covered in its report [4].
The Yahoo Finance article says XRP liquidity would be used if tokenized assets start trading on-ledger rather than just being recorded there, so for XRP to carry more than the fee in flows like this, it would need a trading or bridging role. The Yahoo Finance article said that if tokenized assets start trading on-ledger rather than just being recorded there, XRP liquidity would get used in the process [2]. The wider question is covered in Does tokenization on the XRP Ledger create any demand for XRP?.
Was it a one-off pilot, or has it been repeated or moved to production?
Ondo’s release calls the transaction a pilot [1]. Kinexys said it was excited to continue working with Ondo, Ripple and Mastercard to bring this to life [1], which is a stated intention, not a launch date. As of September 30, 2026, no source reports a second redemption or a production service. How does it compare with other tokenized settlement rails?
The strongest critique, per crypto.news on 8 July 2026, is that the bank in this pilot, JPMorgan with its Kinexys platform, runs its own competing tokenization ledger. The same article called Kinexys the largest bank-run tokenization platform in existence [3]. Banks are also building 24/7 settlement elsewhere: CoinDesk reported that on 5 September 2026 DBS and Citi made a weekend cross-border USD payment using tokenized deposits on Swift’s Digital Ledger, settling in minutes [5]. How much OUSG is on the XRP Ledger?
The Crypto Basic reported on 26 January 2026 that Ondo accounted for $40.8 million of the tokenized U.S. Treasuries on the XRP Ledger [6]. The Yahoo Finance article of 10 June 2026 said Ondo runs OUSG on the ledger with 24/7 minting and redemption [2]. The release does not state the size of the redemption, and that is listed under what is not yet known. The wider Treasury picture is on Are tokenized US Treasuries live on the XRP Ledger?.

What we reason Analysis
- The pilot shows the XRP Ledger acting as the register where the fund token was redeemed, while dollar settlement ran on bank infrastructure. This follows from the step-by-step description in Ondo’s 6 May 2026 release.
- The XRP Ledger was not a requirement of the design: Ondo says the same architecture is meant to work on any public chain where OUSG is issued. This follows from the 6 May 2026 release.
- The documented role of the XRP token in this pilot is the network fee, which at the average cost of $0.00024 per transaction reported by CCN for the quarter covered in its report is a negligible amount. This follows from the June 2026 Yahoo Finance report and the CCN/Blockworks figure.
- One pilot transaction shows the flow can work; it does not show volume. Ondo’s release calls it a pilot, and no later repeat has been reported as of September 30, 2026.
What's still open
- As of 30 September 2026: reports disagree on the cash leg. Ondo’s release describes U.S. dollar proceeds settled by Kinexys through its correspondent banking network; crypto.news (8 July 2026) says RLUSD carried the money, and Yahoo Finance (10 June 2026) says RLUSD did the bridging. Searched: The passages of the release reviewed do not mention RLUSD.
- As of September 30, 2026, no source reports a second redemption or a move to production. Searched:
- As of September 30, 2026, the release does not state the size of the redemption.
- As of September 30, 2026, the release names Ripple, not Ripple Treasury, so any role for Ripple Treasury is not documented.
In plain English
In May 2026 four companies tested a new way to cash out a digital token that represents a share in a fund holding US government debt. Ripple handed back its fund tokens on the XRP Ledger, and US dollars arrived in its bank account in Singapore through JPMorgan’s systems. The companies said the part on the XRP Ledger took under five seconds. Reports differ on whether Ripple’s own dollar token was involved, and no source shows the test has been repeated.
