Is JPMorgan's JPM Coin or Kinexys a competitor to XRP?
Also asked as: “What is JPM Coin exactly?” · “How much volume does Kinexys process?” · “Is XRP clearly better than JPMorgan's system?”
Analysis Published 5 min read
Short answer
Yes, in settlement: Kinexys is JPMorgan’s bank-run platform for moving deposits held at JPMorgan, while XRP is a token on a public blockchain, the XRP Ledger. Kinexys says it averages more than $7 billion in daily transaction volume (its website, checked September 29, 2026). The two worked together in a May 2026 pilot.
The full answer
What is Kinexys, and where does JPM Coin fit?
Kinexys is JPMorgan’s blockchain platform. crypto.news described it on July 8, 2026 as “the largest bank-run tokenization platform in existence” [3]. Ondo’s May 6, 2026 release shows one of its accounts at work: Kinexys debited Ondo’s Blockchain Deposit Account and settled U.S. dollar proceeds to Ripple’s bank account in Singapore through its correspondent banking network [2].
JPMorgan’s own product description of JPM Coin is not among the records this page cites as of September 30, 2026, so its terms are listed under what is not yet known. The wider category, bank money recorded on a blockchain, is explained on the page about what tokenized bank deposits are and how they differ from stablecoins and XRP.
How much volume does Kinexys process?
Kinexys states on its website that it averages more than $7 billion in daily transaction volume; the page carries no date and was checked on September 29, 2026 [1]. This is JPMorgan’s own figure. The project holds no independent count of Kinexys volume as of September 30, 2026.
For scale, Ripple said on March 3, 2026 that Ripple Payments had more than $100 billion in processed volume, on a platform where customers collect, hold, exchange and pay out in fiat and stablecoins [5]. Ripple’s number is a running total and JPMorgan’s is a daily average, so the two do not measure the same thing.
How fast is Kinexys volume growing, and how much is cross-border?
I could find only one Kinexys volume figure and no earlier one, so I could not calculate a growth rate as of September 30, 2026. None of the cited sources splits Kinexys volume into cross-border and domestic payments. Both gaps are recorded for a later update.
Can non-JPMorgan clients use Kinexys, and on what terms?
The cited records show at least one outside firm using a Kinexys account. In the May 2026 pilot, Ondo processed a redemption and sent a fiat payout instruction through the Mastercard MTN, which routed it to Kinexys; Kinexys then debited Ondo’s Blockchain Deposit Account [2]. J.P. Morgan states on its Kinexys JPM Coin page that the coin is currently available in USD and operates on a public blockchain where only vetted counterparties transact; as of October 2, 2026, I could not find any statement of who can open such an account or at what cost. Those terms remain open as of September 30, 2026.
Has JPMorgan done anything on the XRP Ledger?
Yes, in one pilot. On May 6, 2026, Ondo Finance announced the first near real-time cross-border, cross-bank redemption of a tokenized U.S. Treasury fund, conducted with Kinexys by J.P. Morgan, Mastercard and Ripple [2]. Ripple redeemed part of its OUSG holdings on the XRP Ledger, which processed the asset leg in under five seconds, according to the release [2]. The release says one leg ran on a public blockchain and the other settled on bank infrastructure [2]. Zack Chestnut of Kinexys called it “an important step towards establishing a framework for institutional-scale tokenized asset markets” [2].
XRP’s part was small. An article on Yahoo Finance reported on June 10, 2026 that in the JPMorgan pilot RLUSD did the bridging, the banks handled the cash leg, and XRP covered the network fee [4]. crypto.news reported on July 8, 2026 that the instrument that carried the money was RLUSD [3]. The full list of banks linked to XRP is on the page about which major financial institutions are involved with XRP.
Where do the two models differ?
In the pilot, the Kinexys leg ran on bank infrastructure and the XRP Ledger leg ran on a public blockchain [2]. crypto.news set out the case against a volatile token in settlement on July 8, 2026: institutional settlement requires a stable, audited, dollar-denominated instrument, and an asset that can move ten percent in a day is disqualified from the cash leg [3]. 24/7 Wall St. wrote on April 1, 2026 that bank use of XRP depends on whether the cost savings of using it as a bridge asset outweigh the compliance burden of holding a digital asset on their balance sheets [7].
A Kinexys user holds money with JPMorgan and depends on JPMorgan as its bank. An XRP user depends on no issuing bank but takes on price risk. These are different trade-offs rather than one system being a faster copy of the other. The question of whether any other neutral bridge asset matches XRP turns on the same trade-off.
What is the strongest evidence against XRP in this contest?
Large banks are building their own ledgers. In May 2026 the DTCC named Ripple Prime to a roughly 50-firm working group for its tokenization service alongside JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, BlackRock, Citi, Circle and Ondo Finance, crypto.news reported [3]. The same article said several members, most prominently JPMorgan with Kinexys, run their own competing tokenization ledgers, and that the likely output is a standard letting each major dealer plug in its own infrastructure, leaving the XRP Ledger as one candidate among several [3].
Bank deposits are also moving across borders without XRP. CoinDesk reported that on September 5, 2026 DBS and Citi made a weekend cross-border USD payment with tokenized deposits on Swift’s ledger, settling in minutes [6]. CaptainAltcoin reported on September 10, 2026 that the transaction did not use XRP and did not settle on the XRP Ledger [8]. The reasons an institution would pass on XRP are set out on the page about why an institution might choose not to use XRP, and Swift’s own ledger has its own page on its status.
Is XRP clearly better than JPMorgan’s system?
The cited evidence does not show that either system is better for every user. Kinexys reports far larger volume [1], and the settlement asset in the joint pilot was a stablecoin, not XRP [3][4]. XRP’s case rests on being a public asset no single bank issues. An institution that wants a dollar claim on a large bank has a reason to choose Kinexys, and one that does not want to depend on a single bank has a reason to look elsewhere. The evidence to date shows competition between two models, with each serving a different set of users.
What we know
- Kinexys by J.P. Morgan states on its website that it averages more than $7 billion in daily transaction volume. The page is undated; it was checked on September 29, 2026.
- May 6, 2026: Ondo Finance announced a pilot with Kinexys by J.P. Morgan, Mastercard and Ripple. Ripple redeemed part of its OUSG holdings on the XRP Ledger, which processed the asset leg in under five seconds, and Kinexys debited Ondo’s Blockchain Deposit Account and settled U.S. dollar proceeds to Ripple’s bank account in Singapore through its correspondent banking network.
- June 10, 2026: an article on Yahoo Finance reported that in the JPMorgan pilot RLUSD did the bridging, the banks handled the cash leg, and XRP covered the network fee.
- July 8, 2026: crypto.news described Kinexys as the largest bank-run tokenization platform in existence and named JPMorgan, with Kinexys, as the most prominent member of the DTCC tokenization working group running its own competing tokenization ledger.
- September 5, 2026: DBS and Citi made a weekend cross-border USD payment with tokenized deposits on Swift’s ledger (CoinDesk, September 7, 2026). CaptainAltcoin reported on September 10, 2026 that the transaction did not use XRP and did not settle on the XRP Ledger.
- JPMorgan’s Kinexys pages, as read by September 30, 2026, say JPM Coin is currently offered in USD as a bank-backed digital deposit token, that clients deposit USD into a Blockchain Deposit Account and convert it into JPM Coin with funds staying inside J.P. Morgan’s banking infrastructure, and that Kinexys has added five new Asia-Pacific currencies to those accounts. The pages do not name those five currencies, give a date for the expansion, or say on what terms firms that are not JPMorgan clients can open an account, and no public source found so far shows those terms as of September 30, 2026.
What we reason Analysis
- Kinexys and the XRP Ledger compete for the same job, moving institutional money and tokenized assets around the clock. This follows from crypto.news (July 8, 2026) calling Kinexys a competing tokenization ledger and from the Ondo release (May 6, 2026) showing one leg on a public blockchain and one on bank infrastructure.
- Money in a Kinexys Blockchain Deposit Account sits with JPMorgan, so a user depends on JPMorgan as its bank. XRP on the XRP Ledger carries no bank’s name but carries price risk. This follows from the Ondo release’s description of Kinexys debiting a deposit account and from crypto.news on the price moves that rule XRP out of the cash leg.
- In the May 2026 pilot the two systems did different jobs side by side, so the pilot shows cooperation on one transaction, not a decision by JPMorgan to use XRP as a settlement asset. This follows from the Ondo release and the Yahoo Finance and crypto.news accounts of which asset carried the money.
- At the daily rate Kinexys reports, it would pass Ripple Payments’ reported cumulative total of more than $100 billion in about 15 days. This divides one company figure by another; the two measure different things and neither is independently counted. This follows from the Kinexys website (checked September 29, 2026) and Ripple’s March 3, 2026 release.
- Neither system wins for every institution. One that wants a dollar claim on a large bank has reason to prefer Kinexys; one that weighs XRP’s cost savings against the burden of holding a digital asset reaches its own answer. This follows from crypto.news (July 8, 2026) and 24/7 Wall St. (April 1, 2026).
What's still open
- JPMorgan describes Kinexys Digital Payments as a permissioned blockchain system that serves as a payment rail and deposit account ledger, allowing participating J.P. Morgan clients to transfer funds held on deposit with J.P. Morgan, and as a digital representation of depository accounts facilitating real-time cross-border movement of funds between JPMorgan branches. As of October 2, 2026, I could not find a date on JPMorgan’s pages stating when these descriptions were published. JPMorgan’s Kinexys page describes JPM Coin as a bank-backed USD deposit token, issued on the Layer 2 Ethereum network Base, that carries the credit risk profile and balance sheet certainty of commercial bank money; the page also notes the service, now called Kinexys Digital Payments, later launched a Euro. I could not find a date for when JPM Coin launched, as of my check on October 2, 2026.
- As of September 30, 2026, I could find only one Kinexys volume figure and no earlier one, so no growth rate is available. None of the sources splits Kinexys volume into cross-border and domestic. Searched: the Kinexys website record, the Ondo release, crypto.news and CoinDesk records.
- As of September 30, 2026, no announcement moving the May 2026 Ondo, Kinexys, Mastercard and Ripple pilot into regular production was found in the project’s sources.
In plain English
According to J.P. Morgan’s Kinexys website (checked September 29, 2026), Kinexys averages more than $7 billion in daily transaction volume. Money in Kinexys stays as a deposit with JPMorgan, so users rely on the bank. XRP is a token on a public network that no bank issues, but its price moves. In a May 2026 test, JPMorgan’s system and the XRP Ledger each handled one part of the same transaction. They compete for the same work, and different institutions will prefer different ones.
