Can an RLUSD payment route through XRP automatically?
Also asked as: “What is RLUSD, and what does it mean for XRP?” · “Does RLUSD use XRP?”

Short answer
As of October 1, 2026, no public source describes an XRP Ledger rule that would route an RLUSD payment through XRP automatically. Public data does show XRP in RLUSD flows. CryptoTimes, citing Evernorth, reported on July 3, 2026 that the RLUSD/XRP pair carried nearly 90% of RLUSD trading on the ledger. Ripple’s ODL documentation calls XRP a bridge currency.
The full answer
What do the sources say about RLUSD and XRP routing?
Ripple’s product documentation, undated and read in September 2026, says On-Demand Liquidity (ODL) uses XRP as a bridge currency, sourcing liquidity on demand [1]. The same documentation describes ODL as a liquidity management solution for RippleNet [1]. This describes a Ripple product. It does not describe the XRP Ledger’s own exchange rules for RLUSD. How Ripple’s products choose a route is covered in how Ripple’s payment system decides whether to route a payment through XRP.
On the ledger itself, CoinDesk wrote on March 13, 2026 that XRPL activity is increasingly driven by RLUSD, Ripple’s stablecoin, and by tokenized assets that flow through XRP as a bridge currency but do not create sustained demand for the token [3]. Messari’s Q1 2026 report, as reported by crypto.news, said XRP remains tied to network use through transaction fees, account reserves, liquidity, asset ownership and bridging across currencies [6].
The trading data points the same way. The Crypto Times reported on July 3, 2026, citing Evernorth, that the RLUSD/XRP pair processed roughly $900 million in trading volume over the previous six months, nearly 90% of all RLUSD trading on the XRP Ledger [4]. XRP is the main market RLUSD trades against on the ledger. The figure does not show how many of those trades were one leg of a longer route from RLUSD to a third asset. The trading split is covered in more detail in how much XRPL trading involves RLUSD and how much of it is against XRP.
Evernorth’s Q2 2026 report, published September 2, 2026, excludes trades between two non-XRP assets from its volume count. Evernorth says those trades were 18% of trades and roughly 9% of value in the quarter [5]. About 82% of the trades Evernorth counted in Q2 2026 had XRP on one side, and some trading on the ledger already happens directly between other assets. How often a stablecoin conversion uses XRP is the subject of whether every payment on the XRP Ledger goes through XRP.
As of October 1, 2026, no public source gives a technical description of how the ledger compares a direct route with a route through XRP. That mechanism is the subject of how XRP Ledger pathfinding routes payments and what auto-bridging is on the XRP Ledger.
XRPL.org says cross-currency payments that exchange one token for another “can automatically use XRP to bridge the tokens, when it decreases the cost.”[10] Its own example is a USD to MXN payment that goes USD to XRP to MXN “if doing so is cheaper.”[10] Ripple says RLUSD is “Natively issued on XRP Ledger,” so the rule applies to it like any other token there.[11]
For orders placed on the exchange, auto-bridging “happens automatically on any OfferCreate transaction,” and the ledger uses XRP “when doing so is cheaper than trading directly.”[12] Execution can mix the two, using “a combination of direct and auto-bridged offers to achieve the best total exchange rate.”[12]
XRPL.org warns that pathfinding results are not guaranteed to be the best paths, and cautions about results from untrusted servers: “A server could be modified to return less-than-optimal paths to earn money for its operators.”[13] The details are on how XRP Ledger pathfinding works.
Because “both GBP and BRL have active, competitive markets to XRP,” the ledger fills the rest by buying XRP with GBP and selling it for BRL.[12]
Can a payment from RLUSD to MXNB use XRP?
Ripple said on June 9, 2026 that Bitso’s MXN-backed stablecoin, MXNB, will be issued on the XRP Ledger and integrated into Ripple’s Payments on DEX infrastructure and XRPL’s Permissioned DEX. Ripple said that, together with RLUSD, MXNB will support settlement for enterprise cross-border payments across the U.S.–Mexico corridor [2]. This is an announcement of planned issuance. The release quotes Silvio Pegado, Ripple’s Managing Director of LATAM, describing RLUSD and MXNB together on the XRPL Permissioned DEX as on-chain liquidity for payments between dollars and pesos. The release does not describe XRP as part of that settlement flow [2]. The partnership is covered in what the Ripple and Bitso MXNB stablecoin is.
A conversion from RLUSD to MXNB could in principle take a direct pair or a two-leg route through XRP. As of October 1, 2026, no public source shows which one such a conversion would use, or confirms that MXNB has been issued.
What conditions make the XRP route beat the direct pair (depth, spread, fees)?
No public source states the conditions under which a route through XRP beats a direct stablecoin pair. The available data describes the markets such a route would depend on. Evernorth reported on September 2, 2026 that the order book was 81% of trading on the XRPL decentralized exchange in Q2 2026, up from 54% a year earlier [5]. Evernorth also reported that over the six quarters to Q2 2026, XRP-paired automated pools grew 26% while trading through those pools fell 74% [5]. Evernorth’s September 2, 2026 press release says that over the same six quarters to Q2 2026, measured at quarter-end, the count of assets XRP trades against on the order book fell from 479.9 to 319.4, a series low [5].
A route through XRP has two legs, so it needs a working market from the starting asset into XRP and another from XRP into the target asset. No public source gives a depth or spread figure for an XRP/MXNB market. Why depth matters for a bridge asset is covered in why liquidity depth matters for XRP as a bridge.
Do trades on the permissioned DEX get auto-bridged through XRP the same way?
Messari’s Q1 2026 report, as reported by crypto.news, said Permissioned Domains, Permissioned DEX and Token Escrow went live on XRPL [6]. Ripple’s June 9, 2026 release places RLUSD and MXNB together on the XRPL Permissioned DEX [2]. XRPL.org’s documentation says trades in a permissioned DEX can still use auto-bridging as long as the necessary orders all exist in the same permissioned DEX [9]. It adds that a single transaction can use multiple order books in the same permissioned DEX, either as part of a longer cross-currency payment or through auto-bridging [9].
Does Ripple’s own product stack settle in XRP or RLUSD?
crypto.news wrote on July 8, 2026 that inside Ripple’s own product stack, the asset doing the settlement work is predominantly RLUSD, the company’s dollar stablecoin, not XRP [7]. The same article says institutional settlement requires a stable, audited, dollar-denominated instrument [7].
What is the strongest case that RLUSD payments do not need XRP?
Analytics Insight wrote on September 15, 2026 that growing dollar liquidity can support settlement and trading without requiring participants to hold equivalent exposure to XRP’s price [8]. CoinDesk wrote on March 13, 2026 that a payment using XRP for three seconds to settle a cross-border transaction does not generate the same kind of buy pressure as someone staking ETH for months or locking SOL in a DeFi protocol [3]. Ripple’s own MXNB release describes the dollar-to-peso flow with RLUSD and MXNB and does not describe XRP in it [2].
The bull reply, as crypto.news put it on July 8, 2026, is that RLUSD adoption seeds the ledger with the institutional liquidity that XRP-based collateral and bridging would one day plug into. crypto.news called this a claim about sequencing whose first half is observable and whose second half is not yet [7]. The full critique is set out in whether direct stablecoin pairs could make XRP unnecessary on its own ledger, and the wider question follows in whether RLUSD and other stablecoins will replace XRP. Why short use of XRP in a route may not lift its price is covered in why XRP’s price is not rising with adoption. The background on stablecoin liquidity is in why stablecoins matter for XRP liquidity.

What we reason Analysis
- From Evernorth’s 18% figure for trades between two non-XRP assets in Q2 2026: about 82% of the trades Evernorth counted had XRP on one side. Some trading on the ledger already happens directly between other assets.
- From the RLUSD/XRP share reported by CryptoTimes and Evernorth: XRP is the main market RLUSD trades against on the ledger. That figure does not show how many of those trades were one leg of a longer route from RLUSD to a third asset.
- From the two-leg route in the question (RLUSD to XRP, then XRP to MXNB) and Evernorth’s falling count of assets XRP trades against: an XRP route needs a working market on both legs. Fewer assets with an XRP market means fewer destinations an XRP route can reach.
- From Ripple’s ODL documentation: it describes a Ripple product for RippleNet. It is not a description of the XRP Ledger’s own exchange rules for RLUSD.
What's still open
- As of October 1, 2026, no public source gives a technical description of how the XRP Ledger compares a direct route with a route through XRP.
- As of October 1, 2026, no public source measures how often RLUSD conversions on XRPL actually pass through XRP.
- As of October 1, 2026, no public source says whether MXNB has been issued on the XRP Ledger.
In plain English
RLUSD is Ripple’s dollar stablecoin. People ask whether swapping it for another currency on the XRP Ledger passes through XRP along the way. Most RLUSD trading on the ledger has been against XRP, and Ripple’s documentation for one of its payment products calls XRP a bridge currency. No public source describes the ledger rule that would pick an XRP route on its own, or says how often that happens. Critics note that a payment can touch XRP for seconds without creating lasting demand for it.
