Stellar

Plain definition. Stellar is a decentralized blockchain for financial products and services, launched in 2014 to link the world’s financial systems with near-instant global payments and currency exchanges.

Technical definition. Stellar reaches agreement through the Stellar Consensus Protocol (SCP), a Proof-of-Agreement mechanism built on Federated Byzantine Agreement. SCP secures the network through reputation rather than computing resources or staked tokens, and every validator must have a public, verifiable record identifying itself. The network’s native currency, Lumens (XLM), pays transaction fees and can serve as an intermediate currency, with the protocol converting money first into XLM and then into the requested currency. Its smart contract platform, Soroban, is built with Rust and WebAssembly and was released in 2024 with Protocol 20.
