Swift
Plain definition. SWIFT is a member-owned cooperative in Belgium that runs the main network banks use to send each other messages about cross-border payments; it does not move the money itself.
Technical definition. The Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) is a cooperative organization headquartered in Belgium that provides financial messaging services for financial institutions. It is the primary international messaging service for cross-border payments, but it does not provide clearing and settlement services. At launch it introduced a central messaging platform, a computer system to validate and route messages, and a set of messaging standards, and ISO has designated it the registration authority that issues business identifier codes (BIC). The Congressional Research Service describes SWIFT as a cooperative organization headquartered in Belgium, founded in 1973, owned by over 2,400 financial institutions and governed by an elected board of 25 directors.
