Who does XRP actually compete with in cross-border payments?
Also asked as: “Does XRP have competitors as a bridge?” · “What is the biggest competitor to XRP?” · “Will XRP win every payment route?”

Short answer
XRP competes less with other cryptocurrencies than with dollar stablecoins such as Circle’s USDC, bank tokenized deposits and Swift’s own networks, all of which move money across borders without XRP. Stellar is the closest crypto comparison. Swift’s ledger carried its second live tokenized-deposit payment on 5 September 2026, CoinDesk reported.
The full answer
Which networks already move cross-border money without XRP?
Dollar stablecoins are one group. In its own press release, Circle announced the launch of CPN Managed Payments. According to Circle, the service lets financial institutions settle cross-border transactions in USDC while partners interact solely in fiat, and Circle handles USDC minting and burning and the blockchain infrastructure [1]. Circle also reports that USDC has supported over $70 trillion in cumulative onchain settlement, with onchain transaction volume nearing $12 trillion in the fourth quarter of 2025 [1]. Across all issuers, DefiLlama showed $306.3 billion of stablecoins outstanding on 29 September 2026, $74.9 billion of it USDC [6]. The page on whether USDC and Circle can do cross-border payments without XRP covers that comparison.
Bank tokenized deposits are a second group. On 5 September 2026, DBS in Singapore and Citi’s New York office completed a weekend cross-border US dollar payment using tokenized deposits on Swift’s Digital Ledger, and it settled in minutes rather than the industry norm of up to two business days, CoinDesk reported [3]. It was the second confirmed live transaction on the ledger, after HSBC and Standard Chartered’s first live cross-border transfer in August [3]. Citi’s Mridula Iyer said the weekend transaction shows always-on cross-border payments are already a reality [3]. The page on what tokenized bank deposits are explains how they differ from stablecoins and XRP.
Swift’s consumer payments framework is a third. In April 2026, 24/7 Wall St. reported that the framework does not require XRP at any point in the payment flow, and said the first wave of corridors was expected to go live in mid-2026 [2]. The same report said Swift connects over 11,500 financial institutions across more than 200 countries and processes over $150 trillion in cross-border payments a year, and that Ripple’s network is a fraction of that size [2].
A fourth competitor sits inside the XRP Ledger. In the May redemption of a tokenized Treasury fund on the XRP Ledger run by JPMorgan’s Kinexys, Mastercard, Ripple and Ondo, RLUSD did the bridging, the banks handled the cash leg and XRP covered the network fee, according to a report syndicated on Yahoo Finance on 10 June 2026 [4]. Blockworks data reported by CCN show stablecoin supply native to the XRP Ledger rose 195% in the second quarter of 2026 to $825.5 million, with RLUSD at 82% of it [5]. Stablecoin transfer volume on the ledger rose 208% to about $10 billion that quarter, about $9 billion of it in RLUSD [5].
Among crypto networks, Stellar is the closest comparison. A 2025 Finance Magnates report on Swift’s tests connecting its ISO 20022 framework to blockchain networks described Ripple as used for interbank settlements and CBDC payments, and Stellar as supporting cross-border transfers and stablecoins [7]. The page on whether Stellar is a real competitor goes further.
Central bank digital currency platforms and fintech remittance firms are also in the field. This page holds no checked figures on them; they are covered on whether CBDC platforms such as mBridge compete with XRP and in the cost comparison on whether XRP is cheaper for payments.
Where does XRP fit among them?
XRP’s payment role runs mainly through Ripple’s On-Demand Liquidity. In April 2026, 24/7 Wall St. reported that RippleNet does not automatically mean using XRP, that banks can run it entirely in fiat, and that only around 40% of RippleNet partners use On-Demand Liquidity, the product that requires XRP as a bridge asset [2]. The same report said a payment can flow through Swift, be routed via Thunes and settle on On-Demand Liquidity with XRP as the bridge asset, without any bank being forced to use XRP directly [2]. The author argued that in corridors such as India to Pakistan, UAE to the Philippines and Japan to Thailand, Ripple’s local bank partnerships and existing On-Demand Liquidity give it an edge Swift’s new framework has not solved [2]. The share of Ripple’s volume that uses XRP is examined on how much of Ripple’s payment volume uses XRP.
Where does Swift’s ledger overlap with XRP, and where does it not?
Both aim at cross-border money that moves outside banking hours. The DBS and Citi payment ran over a weekend [3], and DBS said the Friday-to-Monday wait costs companies running 24/7 operations money in delayed supplier payments and frozen working capital [3]. In April 2026, 24/7 Wall St. reported that Swift was building its blockchain ledger to handle real-time, 24/7 settlement without relying on Ripple or any other external blockchain [2]. CoinDesk framed the tests as Swift’s response to pressure from stablecoins and tokenized deposits that settle around the clock [3].
The asset moved differs. The live transactions reported on Swift’s ledger moved banks’ tokenized deposits [3]; On-Demand Liquidity uses XRP as a bridge asset between currencies [2]. The stage differs too: CoinDesk describes the ledger as a pilot that launched in July 2026 with 17 banks across six continents [3]. 24/7 Wall St. reported that most of the 30 banks in Swift’s framework with Ripple ties are tied to Ripple’s network infrastructure rather than to the XRP token [2].
The DBS and Citi transfer was a US dollar payment [3], and none of the reports held here show a currency conversion on Swift’s ledger, which is the step an XRP bridge performs. Swift’s reach of 11,500 institutions [2] is therefore a measure of Swift, not of XRP use. The ledger’s status is tracked on what Swift’s blockchain ledger is, and whether it is live.
What did Fed Governor Waller say about payments at Sibos 2026?
Governor Waller’s Sibos 2026 remarks, published by the Federal Reserve Board on 29 September 2026, say: “Much has been said about how stablecoins can potentially improve cross-border payments.” The other Federal Reserve material held is a FEDS Note [18] published on 4 September 2026. It says transactions on a blockchain settle instantaneously, so payment stablecoins could arguably be more liquid than demand deposits, while the vast majority of payments between banks still take 1-2 days [8].
Does XRP have to win every payment route?
No held source measures how many cross-border routes XRP wins. 24/7 Wall St. Reported in April 2026 that only around 40% of RippleNet partners use On-Demand Liquidity, and placed Ripple’s clearest advantage in emerging-market corridors such as India-to-Pakistan [2]. What could give XRP a lasting advantage is examined on what would give XRP a real competitive moat.
What is the strongest evidence against XRP holding a place in this field?
The main alternatives work without XRP. 24/7 Wall St. reported that Swift’s framework does not require XRP and that Santander uses RippleNet’s messaging layer without touching XRP directly [2]. The same report said adoption depends on whether the cost savings of using XRP as a bridge outweigh the compliance burden of holding a digital asset on a bank’s balance sheet [2]. On the XRP Ledger, Ondo’s OUSG mints and redeems in RLUSD, and the June 2026 report said XRP’s volatility rules it out for that job [4]. In the second quarter of 2026, XRPL payment volume fell 27% while stablecoin transfer volume rose, according to Blockworks data reported by CCN [5], which also noted that the XRP Ledger supports stablecoins and tokenized assets while XRP is its native asset [5]. On the other side, 24/7 Wall St. reported that banks in Swift’s framework are operating inside both ecosystems at the same time [2] and that Swift’s overhaul shows pressure from blockchain alternatives has been real enough to force a response [2]. The case for skipping XRP is set out on why an institution might choose not to use XRP, and a side-by-side table is on how Ripple/XRP, Stellar, Circle, JPMorgan, Swift, Ethereum and Solana compare.

- 1 April 2026: 24/7 Wall St. reported that only around 40% of RippleNet partners use On-Demand Liquidity, the Ripple product that requires XRP as a bridge asset [2].
- 10 June 2026: a report syndicated on Yahoo Finance said that in the May tokenized Treasury fund redemption on the XRP Ledger run by JPMorgan’s Kinexys, Mastercard, Ripple and Ondo, RLUSD did the bridging and XRP covered the network fee [4].
- Q2 2026: stablecoin supply native to the XRP Ledger rose 195% to $825.5 million and XRPL payment volume fell 27%, according to Blockworks data reported by CCN on 20 August 2026 [5].
- Governor Christopher Waller of the Federal Reserve gave a speech titled Payments in the Age of AI Agents at Sibos 2026 in Miami on September 29, 2026, and the full text is published as a Federal Reserve PDF. A Yahoo Finance article of September 30, 2026 reports that he called trust the biggest barrier to scaling agentic commerce, especially the agent-delegated model, and said the outcome was not clear but could significantly influence how the market structure evolves; as of September 30, 2026, none of the sources says whether he named XRP or Ripple.
What we reason Analysis
- The main contest is between a neutral bridge asset and dollar-denominated rails that need no bridge asset. This follows from Circle’s USDC settlement service [1], the tokenized-deposit payments on Swift’s ledger [3], and the Swift framework’s lack of any XRP requirement [2].
- Stellar is the closest crypto comparison because its reported role in Swift’s blockchain tests, cross-border transfers and stablecoins, sits next to Ripple’s reported role in interbank settlement. This follows from the Finance Magnates report [7].
- XRP does not need to win every route to have a role; it competes corridor by corridor. This follows from the 40% On-Demand Liquidity share and the corridor-edge argument reported by 24/7 Wall St. [2]. On May 30, 2026, 24/7 Wall St. reported that the network spans more than 70 currency corridors and covers an estimated 80% of major global remittance routes, with the highest-volume corridors running through Japan, the Philippines, and Mexico; I could not find a count of how many of those routes XRP wins, as of October 2, 2026.
- On the XRP Ledger itself, Ripple’s RLUSD competes with XRP for the bridge job. This follows from the Kinexys redemption [4] and the Q2 2026 stablecoin figures [5].
- The DBS and Citi transfer was a US dollar payment, and the reports held here show no currency conversion on Swift’s ledger, the step an XRP bridge performs. This follows from CoinDesk [3] and 24/7 Wall St. [2].
What's still open
- As of 30 September 2026, I could not find whether the more than 25 banks in Swift’s consumer framework went live by June 2026; the only thing I could find was a 24/7 Wall St. report of 1 April 2026.
- As of 30 September 2026, I could not find any source measuring the share of cross-border routes or volume that XRP wins against stablecoins, tokenized deposits or Swift. Searched: the evidence pack for this page and the held fact records.
- As of 30 September 2026, Swift’s own July 2026 announcement of its ledger and Stellar’s institutional infrastructure report are mapped to this page but their text is not in the checked passages, so no figures from them are used.
- As of October 1, 2026, the sources checked do not establish this: Each corridor is a separate contest against rival rails such as stablecoins and Swift. In plain English
Several systems now compete to move money between countries. According to Circle’s own announcement, Circle offers the stablecoin USDC and a payments platform that manages USDC minting and burning. According to CoinDesk (September 2026), DBS and Citi have completed a cross-border payment using tokenized deposits on Swift’s Digital Ledger, the second confirmed live transaction after HSBC and Standard Chartered’s transfer in August. Swift, whose network 24/7 Wall St. described in April 2026 as reaching 11,500 connected banks, was said by that outlet to be separately building its own blockchain-based shared ledger for real-time, 24/7 settlement. According to CoinDesk (September 2026), Swift rolled out that ledger in July with 17 banks. XRP is one option in this group, used mainly through one Ripple service, and many banks that work with Ripple do not use XRP. No source held here shows what share of payments XRP wins.
