Solana

Plain definition. Solana is a smart contract platform built for high throughput, where much of crypto’s DeFi and memecoin activity takes place, CoinDesk wrote in April 2026.

Technical definition. In an April 18, 2026 article, CoinDesk called Solana “a throughput-optimized smart contract platform where the DeFi and memecoin activity actually lives.” It contrasted this with XRP, which “has historically functioned as a payment-rail token settled directly on the XRP Ledger.” XRP reaches Solana as wrapped XRP (wXRP), a token issued by custodian Hex Trust and bridged through LayerZero, with each wXRP backed 1:1 by native XRP held in segregated custody accounts.
