Short answer
CME’s XRP futures grew against the wider XRP market in late August 2026: CoinDesk reported CME open interest rose about 36%, to roughly 387 million XRP, while total XRP futures open interest fell about 16% to 2.34 billion XRP between August 17 and 31.
The full answer
What does the evidence show about XRP’s growth at CME?
The clearest evidence covers two weeks in late August 2026. CoinDesk reported, citing CoinGlass data, that total XRP futures open interest fell from about 2.77 billion XRP on August 17 to about 2.34 billion on August 31, a fall of 16%, while XRP rose from roughly $0.99 to $1.38 [1]. CME went the other way. CoinDesk reported that XRP open interest on CME rose from about 284 million to about 387 million XRP, roughly 36%, while positions on the rest of the market fell by about 533 million XRP, or 21% [1]. CoinDesk put CME’s share of outstanding XRP futures exposure at roughly 17% on August 31, up from about 10% in mid-August [1]. Crypto Times reported the same figures on September 8 [2].
The quarterly comparison with bitcoin, ether and Solana is not yet checked against CME’s reports.
Earlier in 2026, CME Group reported that XRP futures open interest peaked at 14.8K contracts on April 6 and that its XRP futures generated $3.7 billion of notional volume in May [5]. The background to these contracts, from the May 2025 launch onward, is on the page about how big CME XRP futures trading is and how fast it has grown.
How does XRP compare with bitcoin, ether and Solana at CME?
CME Group reported H1 2026 average daily volume of 279,800 contracts ($8.3 billion notional) and average open interest of 264,600 contracts ($15.4 billion notional) across its whole crypto futures and options complex [3]. That release does not split the total by coin.
CME’s quarterly cryptocurrency report for Q2 2026 says XRP futures generated $3.7 billion in notional volume in May 2026 []. The same report shows XRP futures open interest peaking at 14.8K contracts on April 6, 2026, bringing the XRP suite to 18.2K contracts [5]. I therefore give no quarter-on-quarter figures for bitcoin, ether, Solana or XRP. Those figures remain open.
The August data answer a narrower question. They compare CME with other venues for XRP alone. They show a shift within XRP futures, not a comparison between XRP and other coins.
How does XRP’s share of CME crypto volume compare with its share of crypto market value?
As of September 30, 2026, no public source sets XRP’s share of CME crypto volume beside its share of total crypto market value. Both numbers are needed for the comparison, and CME’s per-coin volume table is one of them.
Was the late-August shift of open interest toward CME a one-off or a continuing trend?
As of October 1, 2026, CME’s share of total XRP futures open interest after August 31, 2026 has not been published. The later data points use different units. CME Group data cited by Cryptonomist put XRP futures open interest at 9,184 contracts on September 22 [4]. Cryptonomist reported both venues growing over 24 hours, with CME’s open interest up more than 16% to $756 million and Binance’s up 10% to nearly $700 million; the report does not show whether one venue is taking share from the other.
CME’s own figures show open interest peaking at 14.8K contracts on April 6, 2026 [5], above the 9,184 contracts reported for September 22 [4]. On that evidence, CME XRP open interest has risen and fallen during 2026 rather than climbing steadily.
Does migration to a regulated venue mean less leverage overall, or leverage moving elsewhere?
In late August, total XRP futures open interest fell while CME’s rose [1]. Crypto Times read the combination of shrinking total open interest and rising CME participation as giving the August rally a different structure from one driven by offshore speculation, and added that this does not by itself establish a price direction, because futures serve both directional bets and hedging [2].
Positions at CME are not all hedges. CFTC data through August 25 showed leveraged funds holding 892 long contracts against 3,206 shorts, a net short of about 116 million XRP, more than double the roughly 57 million a week earlier [1]. Dealers added nearly 60 million XRP of net-long exposure and asset managers about 28 million [1]. CoinDesk noted that the CFTC data does not show whether the leveraged funds were betting against XRP or protecting positions held elsewhere [1].
Cryptonomist reported on September 23 that combined CME and Binance futures volume reached about $9 billion against $2.2 billion of spot trading, and that traders opening leveraged bets drove most of the activity [4]. CME is also not the only regulated US venue. Coinbase Derivatives, operated by a CFTC-registered futures commission merchant, lists a nano XRP perpetual-style future of 500 XRP per contract [7], which showed $29.35 million of open interest as of September 2026 [7]. How leveraged positions move prices is covered on the page about leveraged XRP derivatives, funding rates and liquidations.
Did smaller coins listed at CME show the same migration?
CME Group lists futures on Bitcoin, Ether, XRP, Solana, Cardano, Chainlink, Stellar, Avalanche and Sui [3]. It reported that the 2026 additions (Cardano, Chainlink, Stellar, Avalanche and Sui) contributed more than $1 billion in total notional value year to date as of September 22, 2026 [3], and announced Bitcoin Cash and Uniswap futures for October 19, pending regulatory review [3]. None of the cited sources reports how open interest in those smaller coins split between CME and other venues, so the question is open.
Why can dollar notional fall while contract counts rise?
Each CME XRP contract is sized in XRP: 50,000 XRP for the larger contract and 2,500 XRP for the micro [6]. The same number of contracts is worth fewer dollars when XRP’s price is lower. A quarter with more contracts traded can therefore show lower dollar notional. This is arithmetic from the contract sizes, not a measured result for any particular quarter.
What is the strongest case against reading this as XRP-specific institutional growth?
CoinDesk, which reported the shift, also wrote that traders usually move toward regulated venues when they are getting defensive [1]. CoinDesk reported that CFTC data through August 25 showed leveraged funds net short by about 116 million XRP, up from roughly 57 million a week earlier, alongside dealers adding nearly 60 million XRP of net-long exposure and asset managers about 28 million [1]. CoinDesk called CME’s rising share only a rough signal of more professional money in the XRP futures trade [1]. A single two-week window cannot show a trend, and a report of September 23, 2026 describes XRP futures open interest rising to a nine-month high, which it attributes to traders opening leveraged derivatives positions rather than spot buying, citing Coinglass figures referenced by CoinGape [4]. The case that 2026’s rates will not carry forward is set out in whether XRP’s growth rates will continue. What regulated contracts allow institutions to do with XRP exposure is covered in whether XRP can be hedged on regulated markets.
What we know
- Between August 17 and 31, 2026, total XRP futures open interest fell from about 2.77 billion to about 2.34 billion XRP, while XRP rose from roughly $0.99 to $1.38 (CoinDesk, citing CoinGlass, published August 31, 2026).
- Over the same two weeks, CME’s XRP open interest rose from about 284 million to about 387 million XRP, roughly 36%, and positions on the rest of the market fell by about 533 million XRP, or 21% (CoinDesk, August 31, 2026).
- CME’s share of outstanding XRP futures exposure rose from about 10% in mid-August to roughly 17% on August 31, 2026 (CoinDesk, August 31, 2026; the same figures in Crypto Times, September 8, 2026).
- CFTC data through August 25, 2026 showed leveraged funds at 892 long and 3,206 short CME XRP contracts, a net short of about 116 million XRP, more than double the roughly 57 million a week earlier (CoinDesk, August 31, 2026).
- On September 22, 2026, CME’s XRP futures open interest was reported at $756 million and 9,184 contracts, and Binance’s at nearly $700 million (Cryptonomist, September 23, 2026).
- CME Group reported H1 2026 average daily volume of 279,800 contracts ($8.3 billion notional) across its whole crypto futures and options complex (CME Group, September 22, 2026).
- CME Group reported that XRP futures open interest peaked at 14.8K contracts on April 6, 2026, and that XRP futures generated $3.7 billion of notional volume in May 2026 (CME Group, Q2 2026 report).
What we reason Analysis
- Within the late-August window, the CME rise was specific to CME’s share of XRP futures: CME added positions while the rest of the XRP futures market shed about 533 million XRP. The CoinDesk open-interest figures for August 17 to 31, 2026 support this.
- The August data compare venues for one coin. They do not compare XRP with bitcoin, ether or Solana, so on their own they cannot show that XRP grew while other coins did not. The CoinDesk and Crypto Times reports measure only venue share for one coin, which is why this holds.
- CME’s September 22 open interest of 9,184 contracts sits below the 14.8K-contract peak CME reported for April 6, 2026, so CME XRP open interest has not risen in a straight line through 2026. The Cryptonomist and CME figures support this, though the two counts may not use identical contract definitions.
- Because each CME XRP contract is fixed in XRP (50,000 XRP, or 2,500 for the micro), the dollar value of the same number of contracts falls when XRP’s price falls. A quarter can therefore show more contracts and less dollar notional. CME’s contract sizes make this follow.
What's still open
- As of September 30, 2026, the per-asset Q1 and Q2 2026 volume tables in CME’s quarterly Crypto Catch-Up reports (bitcoin, ether, Solana, XRP) have not been compared here.
- As of September 30, 2026, I could not find XRP’s share of total crypto market value alongside its share of CME crypto volume.
- As of September 30, 2026, I could not find any source reporting CME’s share of total XRP futures open interest after August 31, 2026.
- As of September 30, 2026, I could not find any source reporting whether open interest in CME’s Cardano, Chainlink, Stellar, Avalanche or Sui futures shifted toward CME in the same way.
In plain English
Futures are contracts that let traders bet on or protect against a coin’s price moving. In the second half of August 2026, the total amount of XRP tied up in these contracts fell, but the amount on CME, a regulated US exchange, went up. That means a bigger slice of XRP futures moved to the regulated exchange. CME’s own reports that compare XRP with bitcoin, ether and Solana were not part of this comparison as of September 30, 2026, so that comparison stays open.
