RippleNet
Plain definition. RippleNet is one of Ripple’s two products for cross-border payments, a shared system that copies how banks hold accounts with each other so partners can message and settle payments.
Technical definition. Ripple’s product documentation describes RippleNet as “a peer-to-peer distributed application that maintains a virtual ledger to emulate Nostro and Vostro accounts and relationships and consists of a bi-directional messaging layer and a settlement layer.” Rather than reaching into a financial institution’s core banking systems, the institution’s middleware integrates with RippleNet through API operations that replicate funding into the RippleNet virtual accounts. Ripple hosts RippleNet in a cloud environment, and its APIs include RippleNet Server, RippleNet Orchestration, Smart Liquidation Service and Report Service.
