Executive order

Plain definition. An executive order is a legally binding order the President gives to federal agencies, usually directing how they carry out laws or policies that Congress established.

Technical definition. The NIST Computer Security Resource Center glossary defines Executive Orders as “legally binding orders given by the President, acting as the head of the Executive Branch, to Federal Administrative Agencies.” They are generally used to direct federal agencies and officials in their execution of congressionally established laws or policies.
