CFTC

Plain definition. The CFTC, or Commodity Futures Trading Commission, is a commission created in 1974 whose mission is to promote the integrity, resilience and vibrancy of U.S. derivatives markets through sound regulation.

Technical definition. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission was created in 1974 with the enactment of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission Act, at a time when most futures trading took place in the agricultural sector. Its stated mission is to promote the integrity, resilience and vibrancy of the U.S. derivatives markets through sound regulation. Futures contracts for agricultural commodities had already been under Federal regulation since the 1920s, and the CFTC says the futures industry has since grown increasingly varied and complex.
