What fees do I really pay to buy XRP, and what's cheapest?

Short answer
The XRP Ledger’s own charge is 10 drops (0.00001 XRP) per standard transaction, destroyed rather than paid to anyone, XRPL.org said as of September 2026. Every other cost comes from the business in the middle: a trading platform, an ATM operator or a fund. 21shares listed a 0.30% management fee on its XRP ETF on September 29, 2026.
The full answer
What does the XRP Ledger itself charge?
The ledger charges a transaction cost, and it is small. XRPL.org puts the current minimum for a standard transaction at 10 drops, says the amount sometimes rises when the network is busy, and says the XRP is destroyed rather than paid to any party [1]. One drop is 0.000001 XRP, so 10 drops is 0.00001 XRP [2].
The cost is taken only when a transaction lands in a validated ledger. XRPL.org says that applies whether the transaction succeeds or fails with a tec code [1]. Some transactions cost more: deleting an account costs 200,000 drops, which is 0.2 XRP [1]. The page on what it costs to send XRP and how fast it is covers the mechanics in more depth.
This site does not rank platforms, so it names no cheapest one. The ledger’s charge is the same for everyone, which means differences in what buyers pay come from the business they buy through.
What does moving XRP to my own wallet cost?
Withdrawing to a new self-custody address adds a cost that is not a fee. XRPL.org lists the Mainnet reserve at 1 XRP per account plus 0.2 XRP for each item the account owns, and says reserved XRP cannot be sent to others [3]. The first time an address receives XRP, 1 XRP is locked indefinitely [5]. These levels date from December 2, 2024, when validators cut them from 10 XRP and 2 XRP [4], and they can change again through Fee Voting [3].
A first transfer that is too small fails. XRPL.org says a payment to an address that does not exist yet returns tecNO_DST_INSUF_XRP if it sends too little XRP to create the account, and a tec failure still destroys the transaction cost [6]. Getting most of the reserve back means deleting the account, which destroys at least 0.2 XRP [7]. The page on why some of your XRP is locked explains the reserve in full.
Sending to an exchange can cost time instead of XRP. A destination tag tells the exchange which customer to credit [8]. Without one, XRPL.org says the payment can need manual intervention and a discussion with the sender [8], and an address that requires tags rejects the payment with tecDST_TAG_NEEDED [6]. See what a destination tag is.
How do I calculate the spread I paid from my trade confirmation?
The arithmetic below is our method, not a regulator’s. Divide the total you paid, including any listed fee, by the XRP you received. That gives your effective price. Then compare it with a reference price for XRP at the same minute. The gap, times the XRP you received, is roughly what the trade cost you beyond the market price.
A made-up example shows the steps. Say you paid $1,000 and received 650 XRP. Your effective price is about $1.538. If a reference price at that moment was $1.50, then 650 XRP was worth $975 at that price, and the trade cost about $25, or 2.5% of what you paid.
Reference prices differ between sources, so the result is an estimate.
How does an XRP ETF’s fee compare?
A fund charges every year instead of once per trade. 21shares listed a 0.30% management fee for its US XRP ETF (TOXR) on September 29, 2026, and says an investment in TOXR is not a direct investment in XRP [9]. In Canada, Purpose Investments launched the Purpose XRP ETF on the TSX under the ticker XRPP in June 2025, and says it can be held in TFSAs, RRSPs and other registered accounts without managing wallets or keys [10]. Brokerage commissions on fund shares are a separate cost that these issuer pages do not set out. Whether that trade-off suits a holder is the subject of whether an XRP ETF is the same as owning XRP.
What do crypto ATMs cost?
The public figures are about losses. The FBI’s IC3 counted 13,460 complaints and $389 million in losses involving crypto ATMs and kiosks in 2025, up 23% and 58% from 2024 [11]. The FTC reported that in 2024, 33% of older adults who lost $10,000 or more to business or government imposters paid in crypto, and most of those reports mentioned Bitcoin ATMs [12]. The page on whether crypto ATMs are a sensible way to buy XRP goes further.
Are fees part of my cost for tax?
In Canada, the CRA describes the adjusted cost base of a crypto-asset as usually its cost plus expenses to acquire it, and counts outlays and expenses of disposing when working out a gain [14]. US treatment and worked examples are on the page about working out cost basis on XRP.
What can cost more than any fee?
The strongest case against shopping on fees alone is that the larger losses on record come from failures and fraud, not from fees. The Ontario Securities Commission says CIPF does not cover losses of crypto assets if a trading platform goes insolvent [13]. The FTC says crypto payments typically are not reversible and are usually returned only if the person paid sends them back [15]. A low-fee route through an unregistered platform or an ATM used under a scammer’s instructions can cost the whole amount. The question of whether crypto is insured like a bank account sets out what protection exists.

What we reason Analysis
- At the size of a typical purchase, the ledger’s 10-drop charge (0.00001 XRP, from XRPL.org’s transaction-cost and currency-format pages) is too small to separate one way of buying from another, so any difference in what buyers pay comes from the business they buy through.
- Moving XRP to a brand-new wallet carries a cost that is not a fee: XRPL.org’s reserves and accounts pages say the first 1 XRP received is locked, so a buyer who plans to self-custody should count that XRP as unavailable.
- An ETF fee repeats every year while a spread is paid once per trade. On the 0.30% management fee 21shares listed on September 29, 2026, a $10,000 holding would carry about $30 a year, before any brokerage commission or spread on the fund shares, which the 21shares page does not set out.
- A spread can be estimated from a trade confirmation by comparing the effective price paid (total paid divided by XRP received) with a reference price at the same time. This is our own arithmetic, not a regulator’s method, and the answer depends on which reference price is chosen.
What's still open
- As of October 1, 2026, no Canadian or US regulator has published data on the spreads or markups that platforms charge retail buyers of XRP.
- As of October 1, 2026, no public regulator source gives typical fee levels charged at crypto ATMs; the public figures cover losses to scams paid through ATMs, not machine fees.
- No public source establishes whether any Canadian or US regulator has published data on the spreads platforms charge retail buyers of XRP as of October 1, 2026, so treat your number as an estimate rather than a comparison with an official benchmark.
- What fees do crypto ATMs typically charge for buying XRP as of October 1, 2026?
In plain English
Sending XRP on its own network costs a tiny amount, 0.00001 XRP, and that amount is destroyed rather than paid to anyone. Most of what you pay when you buy goes to the company you buy through, such as a trading platform, an ATM operator or a fund manager. If you move XRP to your own new wallet, the first 1 XRP stays locked in that wallet. An XRP fund charges a yearly fee, and owning its shares is not the same as owning XRP. The cheapest option on paper can still cost you more if the company fails or the purchase is part of a scam.
