Market capitalization

Plain definition. Market capitalization, or market cap, is one measure of a company’s size: the total value of its outstanding shares of stock, FINRA explains.

Technical definition. FINRA defines market cap as the total value of a company’s outstanding shares of stock, counting publicly traded shares plus restricted shares held by company officers and insiders. To calculate it, multiply the number of shares outstanding by the current stock price, so 5 million shares at $20 each gives a market capitalization of $100 million. Because investors set the stock price, FINRA calls market cap the perceived value of a company, which is not necessarily its actual value.
