Short answer
People can buy and sell XRP on crypto platforms, which trade around the clock, or through U.S. spot XRP ETF shares bought at a brokerage during market hours. The xrp-insights site counted 7 such ETFs on October 2, 2026. Crypto.com says accounts need a legal name, government ID and selfie. Ledger says payment options vary by region.
The full answer
This page sets out what public sources show about the routes to XRP as of October 1, 2026, and where they stop. For background on the asset itself, start with What is XRP?.
What are the main routes to owning XRP?
The sources describe two routes. One is holding XRP itself. The other is buying shares of a U.S. spot XRP exchange-traded fund (ETF). An xrp-insights guide counted six U.S. spot XRP ETFs that hold XRP directly as of July 2026, and it says futures-based XRP ETFs are a separate category that do not hold spot XRP [1].
The same guide, updated September 30, 2026, sets out the trade-off. In its words, ETF shares trade on stock exchanges during market hours only, can be held in IRA/401(k) accounts and carry annual fees of 0.19% to 0.75%. XRP held directly trades 24/7, carries no annual fund fee and carries self-custody risk [1]. The guide also says ETF exposure is available through an existing brokerage account without managing private keys or wallets, and that the funds hold XRP with institutional custodians such as Coinbase Custody or BitGo [1].
Before opening any account on a crypto trading platform, the steps for confirming it is real are covered in How do I check that a crypto platform is registered and legitimate?. No regulator or platform source cited here covers account opening, identity checks or payment methods such as cards, PayPal, cash or gift cards. The reason platforms ask for identification has its own page: Why does the exchange want my ID?. Crypto ATMs are treated separately in Are crypto ATMs a safe or sensible way to buy XRP?.
How does buying an XRP ETF work?
ETF shares are listed on stock exchanges. Franklin XRP ETF shares trade under the ticker XRPZ on NYSE Arca and were first listed on November 24, 2025, according to the trust’s Form 10-Q for the quarter to June 30, 2026 [3]. 21Shares lists Cboe BZX Exchange as the primary exchange for its TOXR fund [5].
The fund itself deals only with large firms. Franklin’s 10-Q says the fund issues and redeems shares only to eligible financial institutions called Authorized Participants, in blocks of 50,000 shares [3]. For redemptions in cash, the filing says the sponsor arranges for the XRP behind the redeemed shares to be sold and the cash proceeds, after fees, costs and adjustments, distributed [3].
An ETF share is a different thing from a coin. 21Shares states that an investment in TOXR is not a direct investment in XRP, and that TOXR is not registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940, as of September 29, 2026 [5]. The comparison is examined in Is owning an XRP ETF the same as, or safer than, owning XRP?, and the purchase steps, including retirement accounts, in How do I buy an XRP ETF?.
Do traditional brokerages sell XRP itself?
Only one brokerage source is cited here, Charles Schwab. Charles Schwab’s April 16, 2026 release said Schwab Crypto would include direct trading in bitcoin and ethereum at launch; XRP was not among the assets named [2]. The release said Schwab plans, over time, to add more cryptocurrencies and transfer capabilities for deposits and withdrawals [2]. It named Charles Schwab Premier Bank, SSB as the entity offering the crypto account, and said that bank will serve as custodian of clients’ digital assets [2]. As of October 1, 2026, no public source says whether Schwab has added XRP since the launch described in that release.
What order types are there, and what is slippage on a large order?
As of October 1, 2026, no platform documentation or regulator guidance is cited on order types or on slippage. This section stays short for that reason. The one related item comes from a fund filing: the 21Shares 10-Q says that when the trust’s XRP is sold for a cash redemption, the sale takes into account any spread, commissions or other trading costs [4]. The full cost picture, including spreads, belongs on What fees do I really pay to buy XRP, and what’s cheapest?.
How does selling and cashing out work?
For ETF shares, selling happens where they trade: on the stock exchange, through the brokerage account, during market hours [1]. For XRP itself, there is one company-reported cash-out example. Ripple said on December 2, 2025 that in RedotPay’s Send Crypto, Receive NGN feature a user sends XRP or another supported asset from RedotPay and NGN is sent to a designated local bank account [6]. No cited source describes how registered platforms in Canada or the U.S. handle sales and bank withdrawals.
The US Internal Revenue Service says digital assets are treated as property, and that if you sell digital assets for U.S. dollars or similar currency, you must recognize any capital gain or loss on the sale [38]. Records worth keeping from the first purchase are listed in What records do I need to keep and report for crypto taxes?.
What happens to the XRP after a purchase?
XRP bought on a platform either stays in the platform’s custody or is withdrawn to a wallet the holder controls. That choice is examined in Where should I keep my XRP: on the exchange or in my own wallet?. A wallet on the XRP Ledger has its own rule: 21Shares states that XRP remains required for core ledger functions, including maintaining wallet reserves [5]. What that means for a new wallet is explained in Why is some of my XRP locked (the reserve)?. XRP left on a platform depends on the security of that account, covered in How do I secure my account on a crypto trading platform?.
What do the sellers’ own risk statements say?
The firms offering these products describe the risks themselves. 21Shares states that XRP is largely unregulated and that XRP investments may be more susceptible to fraud and manipulation than more regulated investments [5]. Schwab’s release states that investing in cryptocurrencies involves risk, including the risk of total loss of principal invested [2]. Whether any protection applies when a platform or fund fails is a separate question, taken up in Is my crypto insured like a bank account?.
What we know
- As of July 2026, an xrp-insights guide (updated September 30, 2026) counted six U.S. spot XRP ETFs that hold XRP directly, and said futures-based XRP ETFs are a separate category that do not hold spot XRP.
- The same guide (September 30, 2026) lists the trade-off: ETF shares trade on stock exchanges during market hours only, can be held in IRA/401(k) accounts and carry annual fees of 0.19% to 0.75%; XRP held directly trades 24/7, carries no annual fund fee and carries self-custody risk.
- Franklin XRP ETF shares trade under the ticker XRPZ on NYSE Arca and were first listed on November 24, 2025 (Form 10-Q, quarter to June 30, 2026).
- Franklin’s 10-Q (quarter to June 30, 2026) says the fund issues and redeems shares only to eligible financial institutions called Authorized Participants, in blocks of 50,000 shares.
- 21Shares says, as of September 29, 2026, that an investment in its TOXR fund is not a direct investment in XRP, and that TOXR is not registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940.
- Charles Schwab’s April 16, 2026 release said Schwab Crypto would include direct trading in bitcoin and ethereum at launch; XRP was not among the assets named.
- Ripple said on December 2, 2025 that in RedotPay’s Send Crypto, Receive NGN feature a user sends XRP or another supported asset from RedotPay and NGN is sent to a designated local bank account.
- Crypto.com’s help pages say that opening an account happens only through its app and requires a full legal name, a photo of a government-issued ID and a selfie, and that once verification is approved a user can buy, sell, store and send crypto; its exchange help page, dated July 24, 2024, adds nationality, date of birth, email and a mobile number for a one-time passcode. Robinhood’s XRP page says people sign up for a Robinhood Crypto account to buy or sell XRP. As of October 1, 2026, the platform documents reviewed do not cover payment methods (bank transfer, credit or debit card, PayPal, cash, gift cards) or withdrawing sale proceeds to a bank, and no regulator document on any of these points was found.
What we reason Analysis
- Because Franklin’s fund creates and redeems shares only with Authorized Participants in 50,000-share blocks, an individual ETF buyer buys and sells existing shares on the exchange and does not deal with the fund directly. This follows from the Franklin 10-Q.
- The 21Shares 10-Q describes its own XRP sales as taking into account any spread, commissions or other trading costs. A spread is therefore a cost on an XRP sale alongside any stated fee.
- Schwab described transfer capabilities for deposits and withdrawals as a plan to add over time. On a platform without withdrawals, the only way out of a crypto position is a sale on that platform.
- The choice between routes is a choice of custody: an ETF holder relies on the fund and its custodians, while a direct holder either relies on a platform or carries self-custody risk.
What's still open
- As of October 1, 2026, no cited source describes order types or slippage on crypto trading platforms.
- As of October 1, 2026, I could not find any source saying whether Coinbase or any other named platform supports buying, sending and receiving XRP.
- No cited source covers Canadian-listed XRP funds, or whether Schwab has added XRP since its launch release, which says Schwab plans over time to add more cryptocurrencies.
- As of October 1, 2026, public sources do not settle how large the risks are, though 21Shares lists large price swings, lack of liquidity and theft among XRP’s risks and says the value of an investment in its fund could drop sharply and without warning, including to zero. Searched:
In plain English
There are two broad ways to get XRP: hold XRP itself, or buy shares of a fund that holds XRP through an ordinary brokerage account. XRP itself trades at any hour, while fund shares trade only when the stock market is open, and funds charge a yearly fee. One fund maker says its fund share is not a direct investment in XRP. The companies selling these products warn that the value can fall to zero.
