What is Ripple Mint, and what does it say about RLUSD use?
Company-reported Published 3 min read
Short answer
Ripple Mint is Ripple’s platform for institutions to mint, redeem and manage RLUSD through a screen or an API, launched on July 23, 2026 for existing RLUSD customers. Ripple says its earlier platform-based approach does not fully support institutions operating at scale as stablecoins become embedded in trading, payments and treasury operations.
The full answer
Ripple built Ripple Mint so that institutions can mint and redeem RLUSD.[1] Under Ripple’s user terms, a Customer can redeem one RLUSD for one US dollar with Ripple, less fees.[3]
What is Ripple Mint?
The launch came on July 23, 2026, when Ripple described it as “a unified way for institutions to access, mint, redeem, and manage Ripple USD (RLUSD).”[1] Ripple’s stablecoin page describes it as “a unified platform for institutions to mint, redeem, and manage RLUSD liquidity.”[2]
The announcement lists two ways in: a user interface and programmatic access through an API. Through them, customers can mint and redeem RLUSD, bridge RLUSD across chains, track funds through each transaction, query transaction status and balances, and receive webhook notifications for events Ripple lists as “fiat receipt, mint processing, onchain settlement, and payout completion.”[1] Ripple ties it to RLUSD’s newer networks, saying the multichain expansion “is being anchored by the XRPL EVM Sidechain, alongside launches on Base, Optimism, Ink, and Unichain.”[1]
Why did Ripple build it?
Ripple’s stated reason is scale. The announcement says: “As stablecoins become embedded in trading, payments, and treasury operations, access must evolve beyond manual workflows.” It adds that the earlier approach “does not fully support the needs of institutions operating at scale, where automation, real-time visibility, and system integration are critical.”[1] That is Ripple’s account of customer needs. It gives no figures to show them.
Who can use Ripple Mint, and are there minting or redemption fees or minimums?
Ripple says “Ripple Mint is available to existing RLUSD customers today.”[1] The user terms define a Customer as a holder with a customer account at Ripple, covered by the RLUSD Customer Agreement, and say that “to purchase RLUSD from or redeem RLUSD with Ripple, you must be a Customer.”[3] The terms set direct redemption at one dollar per RLUSD “less Fees.”[3]
Ripple’s July 23, 2026 announcement says Ripple Mint is available to existing RLUSD customers.[1] Fees, minimums and any other eligibility rules are not established in the sources reviewed; see the open list. The terms also note that Ripple “cannot control how third parties quote or value RLUSD.”[3] Where RLUSD can be found outside Ripple is covered on the page about where RLUSD is available.
Have RLUSD mint and redemption volumes risen since Ripple Mint launched?
Ripple has not published Mint volumes. The nearest public numbers are total supply figures:
| Date | RLUSD outstanding | Source |
|---|---|---|
| July 6, 2026 | 1,589,084,487 | July 2026 reserve report, examined by an independent accountant[7] |
| July 31, 2026 | 1,463,694,758 | July 2026 reserve report, examined by an independent accountant[7] |
| August 17, 2026 | 1,763,215,434 | August 2026 reserve report, examined by an independent accountant[4] |
| August 31, 2026 | 2,325,969,308 | August 2026 reserve report, examined by an independent accountant[4] |
| September 3, 2026 | $2,395.6 million in circulation | Ripple dashboard, company figure[5] |
On those numbers, supply fell by about 125 million tokens across July, a month that includes the launch, then rose by about 862 million by August 31 (our calculation). Supply is the net of all minting and redemption from every channel, so these numbers cannot show what Ripple Mint itself did. Supply over time is tracked on the page about how much RLUSD exists.
Does building minting infrastructure show demand already exists, or only that Ripple expects it?
Analysis, based on Ripple’s July 23, 2026 announcement: that post explains why institutions at scale need automation, but it gives no customer count or volume figures.[1] On that evidence, building an API for minting shows that Ripple expects institutional volume. It does not show that the volume has arrived.
The critique that Ripple and the XRP Ledger build capacity faster than use shows up is set out on whether XRP infrastructure is ahead of demand. Ripple Mint is built for RLUSD, so any growth it brings is growth in Ripple’s stablecoin business first.
How does Ripple Mint compare with the institutional minting tools of other stablecoin issuers?
Analysis, based on Circle’s documentation and Ripple’s July 23, 2026 announcement, which describe each service separately: Circle’s documentation describes a similar service, Circle Mint; we have not established which came first. Circle’s documentation describes Circle Mint as a service “for institutional customers minting USDC, EURC, or cirBTC,” and says it is “typically used by exchanges, institutional traders, wallet providers, banks, and consumer-app companies.” Circle says it lets customers “mint and redeem USDC, EURC, and cirBTC directly from Circle,” through a console or an API.[6]
On that reading, the shape is the same, according to Circle’s documentation: direct minting and redemption for institutional customers, with a console and an API.
What we know
- July 23, 2026: Ripple introduced Ripple Mint, ‘a unified way for institutions to access, mint, redeem, and manage’ RLUSD, available ‘to existing RLUSD customers today.’
- The same July 23, 2026 announcement listed a user interface and an API for minting and redeeming, bridging RLUSD across chains, tracking transactions, balance queries and webhook notifications.
- August 17 and August 31, 2026: 1,763,215,434 and 2,325,969,308 RLUSD outstanding (issuer’s August 2026 report, examined by an independent accountant).
- July 6 and July 31, 2026: 1,589,084,487 and 1,463,694,758 RLUSD outstanding (issuer’s July 2026 report, examined by an independent accountant in a report dated August 27, 2026).
- September 3, 2026: Ripple’s dashboard showed $2,395.6 million RLUSD in circulation (company figure).
- September 29, 2026: Circle’s documentation describes Circle Mint as its service for institutional customers to mint and redeem USDC, EURC and cirBTC through a console or API.
What we reason Analysis
- Outstanding RLUSD fell by about 125 million tokens between July 6 and July 31, 2026, a period that includes the July 23 launch, then rose by about 862 million to August 31 (our calculation from the July and August reports). Supply is the net of all minting and redemption, so it cannot isolate Ripple Mint’s effect.
- Ripple’s list of webhook events puts fiat receipt before mint processing, which suggests minting follows a payment in dollars; the announcement does not state how minting is funded (our reading of Ripple’s July 23, 2026 announcement).
- Building an API for minting and redemption shows that Ripple expects institutional volume. It does not by itself show that the volume exists (our reading of Ripple’s announcement, which gives no usage figures).
What's still open
- Ripple Mint fees and minimums, and any eligibility rule beyond being an existing RLUSD customer: not found in Ripple’s July 23, 2026 announcement as of September 29, 2026.
- Mint and redemption volumes through Ripple Mint: not published as of September 29, 2026.
In plain English
This is a service from Ripple that lets large firms create new RLUSD, or hand RLUSD back for dollars. They can do it on a website or have their own computer systems do it automatically. Ripple built it because it says hand-run processes did not fully support firms working at scale, which need automation, real-time visibility and system integration. Ripple has not said how much has gone through it.
