Short answer
Whether the same XRP can be held, hedged and put to work at once is not established as of September 30, 2026. Flare said on September 24, 2026 that FXRP is lent and borrowed, posted as collateral, and backs a stablecoin through Enosys CDP. Bitwise’s Crypto Carry Fund held custody XRP against a short future on September 21, 2026.
The full answer
What does Bitwise’s carry fund show about holding and hedging the same XRP?
Bitwise publishes the holdings of its Crypto Carry Fund (USCC). As of September 21, 2026 at 4pm EDT, the table listed 16,331,438.36 XRP in custody with a notional value of $25,934,324, or 14.61% of the portfolio, and a short Coinbase October 2026 XRP future of 16,150,000 XRP with a notional value of -$26,067,715 [1]. Bitwise’s table showed an implied yield of 16.03% on that XRP future and 0.00% on the XRP in custody [1]. The same table listed a CME XRP October 2026 1.4 call with a quantity of 200,000 and a notional value of $48,320 [1]. As of September 21, 2026, it listed collateral rows of USD at $49,147,428, Bitcoin at 79.20 BTC, and Ether and Solana at zero, with no XRP collateral row [1]. The Bitwise fund page lists Anchorage Digital next to the label “Auditor” and says the fund is available to Qualified Purchasers in supported jurisdictions [1]. The page shows only the name and the label “Auditor”, with no further description [1].
This follows from that table: the short future covers about 98.9% of the custody XRP by quantity. The custody line values XRP at about $1.588 each and the future at about $1.614 each, a gap of about 1.6%. The XRP is held, its price exposure is almost fully offset, and the yield the table shows sits on the futures line. On this evidence, the work the XRP does is to back a hedged carry position, not to be lent out. The mechanics are set out in what a hedged XRP carry trade is and who runs one, and the wider tools in how lenders and market makers hedge XRP price risk.
Is the hedged XRP also lent out or posted as collateral?
The cited excerpt lists ‘Minimum Investment’ among the fund’s terms but includes no figure, so the amount cannot be determined from it.
XRP does serve as collateral elsewhere. crypto.news reported on July 8, 2026 that Ripple Prime accepts XRP as collateral for margin and settlement within its own brokerage [2]. Ripple said on November 5, 2025 that Ripple Prime “is now expanding into collateralized lending for XRP” [3]; that is the company’s own description of its direction. Evernorth said on October 20, 2025 that it seeks to grow XRP per share by participating in institutional lending, liquidity provisioning and DeFi yield opportunities [4].
Bitcoin.com reported on September 11, 2026 that Evernorth has identified the XRP Ledger’s upcoming lending protocol as part of its strategy, targeting fixed-rate loans without wrapping XRP [5]. The same report said the XLS-65 Single Asset Vault and XLS-66 Lending Protocol standards are proposed and remain subject to validator approval before they can operate on mainnet, and that Clearpool, whose planned XRPL loans would be denominated in RLUSD, has been testing on Devnet [5]. How that protocol is designed is covered in how the XRP Ledger’s native lending protocol works.
How could XRP lending feed back into XRP payment liquidity?
The loop I sketched runs from a holder lending XRP to a market maker, to the maker quoting XRP against RLUSD or other currencies, to payments routing through XRP, to the maker earning spreads and paying a borrow fee that becomes the holder’s yield. As of September 30, 2026, no public source shows that chain operating. The step-by-step case is on how borrowed XRP could support a cross-border payment, and the inventory side on whether market makers need to own all the XRP liquidity they provide.
The published figures point toward the stablecoin for now. Ripple said on November 5, 2025 that Ripple Payments is a cross-border platform using RLUSD and XRP [3]. CCN reported on August 20, 2026, citing Blockworks’ State of XRP report, that XRP Ledger stablecoin transfer volume rose 208% to about $10 billion in Q2 2026, with RLUSD generating about $9 billion of it, while the ledger’s payment volume fell 27% and its decentralized exchange volume fell 36% [6]. crypto.news reported on July 8, 2026 that inside Ripple’s own product stack, the settlement asset is predominantly RLUSD, not XRP [2]. The wider map of roles is on what kinds of capital and roles form around XRP in tokenized finance.
Which jobs can the same XRP do at the same time?
A short future is a separate contract on an exchange, so it can sit alongside XRP in custody without moving it. Lending XRP, pledging it as margin or placing it in a pool moves or locks the units, so one unit cannot be in two of those places at once under ordinary terms. A borrower who receives lent XRP can use it again, which is how one holder’s XRP can support a second party’s activity. That is also why totals of ETF, treasury, DeFi and derivatives XRP can overlap, as explained in whether those holdings can be added together.
Does stacking jobs stack risk, so one price drop hits every layer at once?
XRP’s price moves are large. CCN reported that XRP fell 20% in Q2 2026 and closed the quarter at $1.04 [6]. crypto.news wrote on July 8, 2026 that XRP traded near $1.13, down roughly 70% from its 2025 peak, and that an asset able to move ten percent in a day is disqualified from the cash leg of institutional settlement [2].
Analysis, general reasoning not drawn from the cited Bitwise excerpt: a hedge is meant to offset a fall in XRP with a gain on a short position. What happens to a loan in that case is covered in what happens to an XRP-backed loan if XRP’s price drops, and the wider loop in whether XRP lending could create a self-reinforcing feedback loop.
What is the strongest evidence against the several-jobs case?
crypto.news described Ripple Prime’s arrangement on July 8, 2026 as Ripple’s own brokerage accepting Ripple’s own asset, and wrote that the collateral path “today mostly runs in a circle” [2]. The same article found collateral real but largely internal, settlement flowing to the stablecoin, and the XRP demand from Ripple Prime’s business today “a sliver” [2]. It named the first signal that would change this: a brokerage or clearing venue Ripple does not own announcing that it accepts XRP as margin collateral [2]. The Bitwise evidence is one fund, and its XRP was 14.61% of that fund’s portfolio on September 21, 2026 [1]. The case that multiplied uses are simply borrowing is made in whether an XRP liquidity multiplier is just borrowing.
What we know
- As of September 21, 2026 (4pm EDT), Bitwise’s Crypto Carry Fund (USCC) table listed 16,331,438.36 XRP in custody ($25,934,324, 14.61% of the portfolio, implied yield 0.00%) and a short Coinbase October 2026 XRP future of 16,150,000 XRP (-$26,067,715, implied yield 16.03%).
- The same table, as of September 21, 2026, listed a CME XRP October 2026 1.4 call with a quantity of 200,000 and a notional value of $48,320.
- Which collateral backs which Bitwise futures position is not established.
- Bitwise names Anchorage Digital as USCC’s custodian; the fund is limited to Qualified Purchasers in supported jurisdictions (fund page, as of September 2026).
- crypto.news reported on July 8, 2026 that Ripple Prime accepts XRP as collateral for margin and settlement within its own brokerage, and called that collateral real but largely internal.
- Ripple said on November 5, 2025 that Ripple Prime is expanding into collateralized lending for XRP.
- Evernorth said on October 20, 2025 that it seeks to grow XRP per share by participating in institutional lending, liquidity provisioning and DeFi yield opportunities.
- Bitcoin.com reported on September 11, 2026 that the XLS-65 and XLS-66 lending amendments are proposed and remain subject to XRP Ledger validator approval before operating on mainnet, and that Clearpool’s planned RLUSD-denominated XRPL lending product was being tested on Devnet.
- CCN reported on August 20, 2026, citing Blockworks, that XRP fell 20% in Q2 2026 to close at $1.04, that RLUSD generated about $9 billion of roughly $10 billion in XRPL stablecoin transfer volume, and that XRPL payment volume fell 27% and DEX volume fell 36% in the quarter.
- September 21, 2026: Bitwise’s holdings table for its Crypto Carry Fund showed 16,331,438.36 XRP in custody, valued at $25,934,324, against a short Coinbase October 2026 XRP futures position of 16,150,000 XRP, valued at -$26,067,715 (Bitwise, as of September 21, 2026).
What we reason Analysis
- This follows from the September 21, 2026 USCC table: the short future covers about 98.9% of the custody XRP by quantity (16,150,000 / 16,331,438.36), so the fund’s XRP is held and almost fully hedged at the same time.
- This follows from the same table’s notional values: custody XRP is valued at about $1.588 per XRP ($25,934,324 / 16,331,438.36) and the future at about $1.614 per XRP ($26,067,715 / 16,150,000), a gap of about 1.6%. This reads as the fund being paid through the futures premium, not through lending the XRP.
- From the difference between a futures contract and the underlying units: a short future does not move the XRP, so it can overlap with holding. Lending, pledging or pooling the XRP moves or locks the units, so those uses compete with each other for the same units.
- From the Q2 2026 and 2026-to-date price moves reported by CCN and crypto.news: when the same unhedged XRP backs several positions, one price fall reduces the value of each position at once. A hedge offsets price moves but leaves the holder exposed to the futures venue and to changes in the futures premium.
What's still open
- As of September 30, 2026, is any pool of XRP held, hedged and lent or posted as collateral at the same time? No public source shows it.
- As of September 30, 2026, I could not find any source documenting XRP lent to a market maker and used to quote XRP/RLUSD or XRP/MXNB pairs for payments.
- As of the September 21, 2026 snapshot, the USCC table does not state which collateral row backs which futures position.
- Evernorth signed a financing agreement on September 11, 2026, for a $30 million convertible note, with net proceeds of approximately $30.0 million intended for general corporate purposes including the acquisition of XRP and other activities within the XRP ecosystem, according to an SEC filing reported on September 18, 2026. I could not find any figure for XRP loans at Ripple Prime as of October 1, 2026.
- As of October 1, 2026, the implied yield of the Bitwise Crypto Carry Fund is not established by the cited records.
In plain English
A fund run by Bitwise holds about 16.3 million XRP and has also sold a contract of almost the same size that gains when XRP falls, so most of the price swings cancel out. The fund’s own table shows a yield on that contract, which is how the held and hedged XRP is put to work. Lending the same XRP out or pledging it for a loan is a separate step, and no source this site uses shows that happening to the same XRP at the same time. When one pile of XRP backs several uses without a hedge, a single price drop can reduce the value of all of them together.
