Short answer
This site gives no buy, sell or hold advice. Since 2025, XRP has gained US spot ETFs and a collateral role at Ripple’s own prime broker, but crypto.news found in July 2026 that the share of that activity creating XRP demand today is “a sliver”. It reported XRP near $1.13 then, about 70% below its 2025 peak.
The full answer
This site gives no buy, sell or hold advice, and this page makes no price prediction. It sets out what the sources show about XRP over long holding periods, what they do not show, and what would change the picture.
What has changed for XRP since 2025?
Ripple wrote in April 2026 that the legal uncertainty that had kept institutional capital at arm’s length resolved by mid-2025, and that the SEC introduced generic listing standards for commodity-based crypto ETPs [1]. According to Ripple, US spot XRP ETFs launched in late 2025, including Canary’s XRPC on 13 November and Bitwise’s fund on 20 November [1]. The same Ripple post counted seven US spot ETFs with $1.53 billion in assets and 773 million XRP in custody [1]. Ripple also reported that Goldman Sachs disclosed a $153.8 million spot XRP ETF position in its Q4 2025 13F filing, and that CME XRP futures, launched in May 2025, were the fastest CME crypto futures contract to reach $1 billion in open interest [1].
SoSoValue data reported by KuCoin on September 28, 2026 put US spot XRP ETF net assets at $1.77 billion, equal to 1.8% of XRP’s market cap, with cumulative net inflows of $1.79 billion and $75.59 million of net inflow in the week of September 21 to 25 [2]. On May 12, 2026 CoinDesk had reported net assets of $1.18 billion, about 1.3% of market cap [3].
Outside the funds, crypto.news reported in July 2026 that Ripple Prime, the prime broker Ripple bought as Hidden Road, clears more than $3 trillion in trades a year for over 300 institutional clients, and accepts XRP as collateral for margin and settlement within its own brokerage [4]. Analysts writing for MoneyCheck, quoted by ICObench in May 2026, said the model “elevates XRP from a speculative asset into functional market plumbing” [5].
How much of that activity creates demand for XRP?
crypto.news counted three ways a business creates demand for a token: paying fees in it, posting it as collateral, or using it as the settlement asset [4]. Its July 2026 finding for Ripple Prime was that fee burn is negligible, collateral is real but largely internal, and settlement flows to the stablecoin, adding up to “a sliver” [4]. It reported total XRP Ledger fee burn since 2012 at roughly 14 million XRP against a 100 billion supply, and found that the settlement asset inside Ripple’s product stack is predominantly RLUSD, not XRP [4]. It also noted that Ripple Prime’s revenues belong to Ripple’s shareholders, that XRP holders receive no mechanical claim on Ripple’s businesses, and that Ripple funds its expansion substantially from escrowed XRP, so holders bear the dilution [4].
The ETFs work through a narrower channel. Cheeky Crypto, published by KuCoin on September 22, 2026, explained that collateral acceptance of ETF shares adds zero direct XRP demand and that XRP buying happens only when new fund shares are created [7]. More on this gap is on XRP’s value-capture problem.
What has the price done for holders?
CoinDesk reported on May 12, 2026 that XRP was down 39% over six months and well off its July 2025 high near $3.65 [3]. crypto.news reported in July 2026 that XRP traded near $1.13, down roughly 70% from its 2025 peak, after “sliding through a year of institutional wins” [4]. The 21Shares XRP ETF’s 10-Q reports net assets down 54.41% from December 31, 2025 to June 30, 2026 as XRP’s price declined 42.91%, and the fund’s XRP fell from 135,559,073.5 to 108,256,464.1 units, with 41,458,741 XRP sold for redemptions [6]. Measured swings and drawdowns over longer periods are on how volatile XRP is.
On these sources, the institutional build-out and holder returns moved in opposite directions in the first half of 2026. Infrastructure progress and returns for a holder are separate questions.
Does the current price already include future adoption?
The SoSoValue figures reported by KuCoin on September 28, 2026 ($1.77 billion equal to 1.8% of market cap) imply an XRP market cap of roughly $96 billion to $101 billion [2]. A long-term holding gains only if demand grows beyond what that valuation already reflects, and no public source measures that. The question has its own page: is future adoption already priced into XRP.
The bull answer, as crypto.news described it in July 2026, is that RLUSD adoption seeds the ledger with institutional liquidity that XRP-based collateral and bridging would later plug into; crypto.news called this coherent but a claim about sequencing whose second half is not yet observable [4].
What is the strongest case against holding XRP long term?
crypto.news wrote in July 2026 that skeptics do not deny the infrastructure is real; they deny that infrastructure owned by the token’s issuer, without third-party adoption, is token demand, and “on the evidence to date they have been right” [4]. It added its own view that the DTCC’s tokenization service is not built on the XRP Ledger, and that collateral demand at scale needs firms other than Ripple to accept XRP as margin, which requires commodity classification and risk-committee approval [4]. According to crypto.news, a secondary source, the DTCC’s tokenization service is not built on the XRP Ledger, and the DTCC itself has never said otherwise [4]. ICObench reported in May 2026 record short exposure on Binance alongside spot accumulation, and set out a bear case in which bank risk committees decline XRP as collateral, stalling Ripple Prime’s model at the pilot stage [5]. The full risk list is on how risky XRP is, and each kind of risk is separated on the kinds of XRP risk.
What would show the thesis is working?
crypto.news named checkable signals in July 2026: a brokerage or clearing venue that Ripple does not own accepting XRP as margin, and Hidden Road’s post-trade activity moving onto the XRP Ledger in visible volume [4]. Cheeky Crypto named two numbers to watch: collateral levels and net fund creations [7]. It reported that XRP fund collateral grew from roughly $36,000 in April 2026 to at least $8.3 million by August [7]. A longer list is on what to watch instead of the price.
What would show the thesis is failing?
crypto.news, in July 2026, listed the counter-signals as: a working-group standard that specifies dealer-owned ledgers, the October full launch proceeding with no XRPL role, or Ripple Prime’s growth continuing while its XRPL migration stays a press-release commitment [4]. According to crypto.news, the DTCC’s tokenization service is not built on the XRP Ledger, and the DTCC itself has never said otherwise [4]. The counter-signal is therefore the DTCC’s tokenization service continuing to operate with no XRP Ledger role. crypto.news reported that in May 2026 the DTCC named Ripple Prime to the roughly 50-firm Industry Working Group shaping its tokenization service, with a full launch planned for October [4]. crypto.news also said to watch the RLUSD share of Ripple’s own settlement flow: if the stablecoin keeps absorbing each new institutional product, as it has across the OUSD consortium and beyond, the token’s role narrows even as the company’s widens [4]. ICObench’s bear case, bank risk committees declining XRP as collateral, is a further failure signal [5].
What is still pending?
Evernorth signed a $30 million convertible note agreement on September 11, 2026 whose proceeds may be used to buy XRP, issued only if its combination with Armada Acquisition Corp. II closes, which depended on a September 30 vote, Crowdfund Insider reported [8]. The same report put Evernorth’s existing position at more than 473 million XRP at the end of 2025 [8]. ICObench wrote in May 2026 that the data could not confirm whether bank risk committees had approved XRP as collateral or whether the Neuberger facility had been drawn in material size, and quoted Ripple Prime CEO Mike Higgins: “we’re still early on in the space” [5].
Ripple Prime’s CEO Mike Higgins positioned XRP in May 2026 as institutional-grade collateral alongside bitcoin, ether and Solana; ICO Bench describes his own caveat, “we’re still early on in the space”, as the most honest framing available [5].
How are gains taxed after years of holding?
Tax on a sale after a long holding period is covered on XRP tax in Canada and the US.

What we know
- SoSoValue data reported by KuCoin on September 28, 2026 put US spot XRP ETF net assets at $1.77 billion, 1.8% of XRP’s market cap, with cumulative net inflows of $1.79 billion.
- CoinDesk reported on May 12, 2026 cumulative XRP spot ETF net inflows of $1.35 billion and net assets of $1.18 billion, about 1.3% of XRP’s market cap.
- Ripple wrote in April 2026 that seven US spot XRP ETFs held $1.53 billion in assets and 773 million XRP, and that Goldman Sachs disclosed a $153.8 million spot XRP ETF position in its Q4 2025 13F filing.
- crypto.news reported on July 8, 2026 that Ripple Prime clears more than $3 trillion in trades a year for over 300 institutional clients and accepts XRP as collateral within its own brokerage.
- crypto.news concluded on July 8, 2026 that the present-day XRP demand from Ripple Prime’s business is “a sliver”: fee burn is negligible, collateral is largely internal, and settlement flows to the RLUSD stablecoin.
- crypto.news reported on July 8, 2026 that XRP traded near $1.13, down roughly 70% from its 2025 peak.
- The 21Shares XRP ETF (TOXR) 10-Q reports net assets down 54.41% from December 31, 2025 to June 30, 2026 as XRP’s price declined 42.91%.
- Evernorth signed a $30 million convertible note agreement on September 11, 2026 that is issued only if its combination with Armada Acquisition Corp. II closes, Crowdfund Insider reported on September 22, 2026.
- Armada II shareholders approved the business combination with Evernorth at the September 30, 2026 meeting, with 20,514,034 votes for, 1,362,081 against and 930 abstentions, as Evernorth and Armada II announced on October 1, 2026. The deal is expected to raise about $300 million in gross cash, including $30 million of convertible notes, which Evernorth arranged at 4% annual interest maturing in 2031. As of October 2, 2026, no public source says whether those notes have actually been issued, and Nasdaq trading under XRPN is expected to begin on October 8, 2026.
What we reason Analysis
- Working from the SoSoValue figures KuCoin reported on September 28, 2026 ($1.77 billion of ETF net assets equal to 1.8% of market cap), XRP’s market cap was roughly $96 billion to $101 billion at that time. The range reflects rounding in the 1.8% figure.
- Set the crypto.news July 2026 price report beside the TOXR 10-Q: institutional infrastructure grew while holders from the end of 2025 to mid-2026 lost value, so infrastructure progress and holder returns are separate questions.
- Taking crypto.news’s three demand routes and the Cheeky Crypto ETF mechanism (KuCoin, September 22, 2026) together, a long-term case rests on XRP demand from firms other than Ripple and on net ETF share creations, because holders have no claim on Ripple’s revenue.
- Given ETF holdings, Ripple Prime’s collateral use and the RLUSD findings, the case no longer rests only on hypothetical bank adoption. Still, no public source shows whether demand will grow beyond what a valuation near $96 billion to $101 billion already reflects.
What's still open
- As of October 1, 2026, no source shows a brokerage or clearing venue that Ripple does not own accepting XRP as margin; ICObench wrote in May 2026 that the data could not confirm bank risk-committee approval.
- As of October 1, 2026, no source says whether the DTCC tokenization service’s October full launch gives the XRP Ledger any role.
- crypto.news wrote on July 8, 2026 that no serious estimate puts a number on how much of Ripple Prime’s $3 trillion becomes XRP demand, and no later estimate has been published as of October 1, 2026.
In plain English
This site does not tell anyone to buy, sell or hold XRP. Large financial firms now offer and hold XRP funds, and Ripple’s own broker accepts XRP as security for trading. A July 2026 analysis found that only a small slice of that activity creates demand for the coin itself, and XRP’s price fell about 70% from its 2025 peak while these deals arrived. Whether holding XRP pays off depends on whether real demand grows faster than what the price already assumes.
