Short answer
XRP’s maximum supply is 100 billion. CoinMarketCap listed that cap on 29 September 2026, and Finbold and XRP Insights describe it as fixed. CoinMarketCap showed 62.87 billion circulating that day. Ripple says 80 billion were gifted to it in 2012 to build uses for XRP, and Ripple reported holding 37.66 billion on 30 June 2026.

How many XRP exist today?
On 29 September 2026, CoinMarketCap listed XRP with a maximum supply of 100 billion, a total supply of 99.98 billion and a circulating supply of 62.87 billion [1]. CoinGecko, checked the same day, counted 63 billion XRP as tradable [2]. CoinGecko calculated XRP’s market cap from that circulating figure, not from the full 100 billion [2]. Finbold and XRP Insights, both writing in September 2026, describe the 100 billion as XRP’s fixed maximum supply [5][6]. The page on whether XRP fee burns make XRP scarce covers how much XRP transaction fees have destroyed since launch.
CoinGecko said the same day that 63 billion XRP were tradable on the market, and gave a market cap of $93,682,448,248 [2].
How much of the 100 billion does Ripple hold?
Ripple reports its XRP holdings as of the last day of each quarter. It splits them into XRP in its wallets and XRP in on-ledger escrow [3]. Ripple’s XRP page gives these figures as of 30 June 2026 [3]:
- 37,656,053,914 XRP held by Ripple
- 62,329,587,596 XRP distributed
- 32,600,000,000 XRP placed in escrow
The page also states that the majority of Ripple’s XRP supply is in escrow [3]. These are Ripple’s own figures.
crypto.news noted on 1 September 2026 that Ripple also controls operational wallets containing XRP released earlier [4]. XRP Insights sums the escrow objects on the ledger directly. On 26 September 2026 it counted 31.98 billion XRP in Ripple’s escrow and a further 4.74 billion in operational wallets [6]. How much of the circulating figure can actually be traded is a separate question, covered in how much XRP is actually available to trade.
Why are there so many XRP, and who received them first?
Ripple’s XRP page says David Schwartz, Jed McCaleb and Arthur Britto launched the XRP Ledger, with its native currency XRP, in 2012 [3]. The same page says the company now known as Ripple was founded in September of that year. It also says 80 billion XRP were gifted to Ripple so it could build use cases around the asset [3]. None of the cited sources gives a reason for choosing 100 billion as the total. The page on how the original 100 billion XRP was distributed covers who received the rest and what the founders have sold.
Can Ripple create more XRP?
Ripple describes itself as a holder of XRP and as one of many developers building on and contributing to it [3]. The supply trackers cited here call the 100 billion cap fixed [5][6].
The escrow limits when Ripple can reach the XRP it has locked. crypto.news reports three points [4]:
- The escrow restrictions operate through the XRP Ledger, not through an informal company commitment.
- Ripple cannot bring forward the release dates of its existing time-based escrows.
- The ledger rejects any attempt to finish an escrow before its set date.
Finbold also reports that the XRP Ledger enforces the timing of each release [5].
How does the escrow change the circulating number?
crypto.news reported that Ripple placed 55 billion XRP into escrow in December 2017. The company said this would allow up to 1 billion XRP to become available each month [4]. Finbold says Ripple has historically returned most unlocked tokens to new escrow contracts [5].
On 1 September 2026, Ripple unlocked 1 billion XRP in three transactions of 500 million, 400 million and 100 million [4]. An independent tracker cited by crypto.news showed about 32.28 billion XRP in escrow before those transactions and about 31.28 billion after [4]. Ripple had not published an updated official balance at the time [4].
Finbold reported that later re-escrow transactions pushed the balance back to around 32 billion [5]. It also reported that potentially circulating XRP has generally grown by 200 million to 300 million a month, not by the full 1 billion [5].
crypto.news says Ripple has often returned 600 million to 800 million XRP after monthly unlocks. Ripple’s historical pattern, it says, is to use part of each release for operations, institutional transactions and other corporate purposes [4]. It adds that an unlock makes XRP available to Ripple but does not prove any market sale [4].
XRP Insights listed the next unlock window as opening on 1 October 2026, for up to 1 billion XRP [6]. The mechanics are explained in what the XRP escrow is and what happens when it runs out.
Could validators change the supply cap by amendment?
Ripple’s XRP page says XRP Ledger validators agree on the order and outcome of transactions every 3 to 5 seconds [3]. Finbold describes XRP’s maximum supply of 100 billion tokens as fixed [5]. Whether that figure could ever change is covered in the open questions below. This page gives no answer.
What is the strongest case that the headline supply understates future supply?
CoinGecko gave XRP a fully diluted valuation of $148,966,532,859 on 29 September 2026. That figure assumes all 100 billion XRP were in circulation [2]. CoinGecko notes it might take multiple years before that full supply circulates [2].
By Ripple’s own report, it held 37,656,053,914 XRP on 30 June 2026 [3]. Finbold reports that potentially circulating XRP has generally grown by 200 million to 300 million a month [5]. crypto.news adds that the net supply change from an unlock can only be worked out after the related transactions and any transfers from Ripple’s operational wallets are reviewed [4].
On the other side, Finbold reported in September 2026 that recent unlocks had not triggered sustained selling pressure [5]. Whether Ripple’s releases amount to selling into the market is examined in is Ripple dumping XRP on holders.

What we reason Analysis
- Ripple’s two 30 June 2026 figures add up to about 99.99 billion XRP: 37.66 billion held and 62.33 billion distributed. CoinMarketCap showed a total supply of 99.98 billion on 29 September 2026. The two sets of figures come from different publishers and were taken three months apart. This rests on Ripple’s XRP page and CoinMarketCap.
- On Ripple’s 30 June 2026 figures, about 5.06 billion XRP sat in Ripple’s hands outside escrow. That is 37.66 billion held minus 32.6 billion in escrow. XRP Insights put Ripple’s operational wallets at 4.74 billion on 26 September 2026. The two figures come from different publishers and different dates. This rests on Ripple’s XRP page and the XRP Insights supply report.
- The escrow balance moves within a single month. It was about 31.28 billion right after the 1 September 2026 unlock and 31.98 billion on 26 September. That fits Finbold’s report that re-escrow pushed the balance back to around 32 billion. This rests on crypto.news, Finbold and XRP Insights.
- Ripple cannot add to the supply, and that answer rests on two things: the trackers’ description of the 100 billion cap as fixed, and the ledger-enforced escrow dates reported by crypto.news and Finbold. On those sources, Ripple’s influence is over when it uses or releases XRP it already holds. It has no say over the total count.
What's still open
- As of 1 October 2026, none of the public sources cited here explains why the total was set at 100 billion XRP.
- As of 1 October 2026, none of the cited public sources says whether XRP Ledger validators could change the 100 billion cap by amendment, or what level of agreement that would take.
- As of 1 October 2026, Ripple’s own holdings and escrow figures for the quarter ending 30 September 2026 were not yet available in the sources cited here.
- As of 1 October 2026, how much of the XRP from that day’s unlock window Ripple will return to escrow had not been reported.
In plain English
XRP has a cap of 100 billion coins, and supply trackers describe that cap as fixed. About 63 billion were counted as circulating in late September 2026. Ripple, the company that was given 80 billion in 2012, still held about 37.7 billion at the end of June 2026, by its own report. Most of Ripple’s coins are held in escrow, which works like a timed lock on the ledger. Each month up to 1 billion can unlock, and Ripple has usually locked most of that again.
