Where does XRP trade, and how much of its reported trading volume is real?
Confirmed Published 5 min read
Short answer
XRP trades on centralized exchanges, on futures markets such as CME and Binance, and on the XRP Ledger’s own exchange. No public source had established how much of the reported volume is wash trading as of October 1, 2026. Cryptonomist reported on September 23, 2026 about $9.4 billion of 24-hour futures volume against $2.2 billion of spot.

Where does XRP trade?
XRP trades in three kinds of venue. The first is futures markets. Cryptonomist reported on 23 September 2026 that futures volume across CME and Binance was about $9.4 billion over the previous 24 hours [1]. The second is centralized exchanges, where spot trading happens. CCN’s 20 August 2026 report on Blockworks’ State of XRP report gave centralized exchange spot volume of $57.6 billion for Q2 2026 [2]. The third is the XRP Ledger’s own decentralized exchange, which combines an order book with automated pools. Evernorth’s Q2 2026 report, published 2 September 2026, counts both parts together [3]. DefiLlama tracks the same ledger exchange in dollars [4]. Coinbase Derivatives lists an October 2026 XRP futures contract of 500 XRP per contract, as shown on its contract page in September 2026 [5].
CME Group reported $3.7 billion of notional volume in its XRP futures in May 2026 [8].
How much of the volume is futures rather than spot?
Cryptonomist’s 23 September 2026 report put spot trading at $2.2 billion over 24 hours, against about $9.4 billion of futures volume across CME and Binance [1]. The same article put Binance XRP futures open interest at almost $700 million, with Binance trading volume above $2.4 billion. It put CME XRP futures open interest at $756 million and cited CME data showing 9,184 contracts of open interest and daily volume of 10,559 contracts [1]. Cryptonomist wrote that the jump in open interest happened almost entirely through derivatives positioning rather than spot accumulation [1].
In Q2 2026, perpetual futures volume was $154.9 billion, down 44%, and centralized exchange spot volume was $57.6 billion, down 54%, according to CCN’s report on Blockworks data [2]. Coinbase’s contract page for XRP Futures (Oct 2026), traded on Coinbase Derivatives Exchange, listed open interest of $42.1M and 24-hour volume of $14.83M, with an expiry of Oct 1, 2026. The effect of these positions on price is covered in how leveraged XRP derivatives, funding rates and liquidations move the price.
Analysis. Futures turnover was about four times spot turnover on Cryptonomist’s one-day figures and about 2.7 times on Blockworks’ quarterly figures, as reported by CCN.
How much trading happens on the XRP Ledger itself?
Evernorth reported that trading on the ledger’s exchange ran at 4.42 million XRP a day in Q2 2026, up about 20% from a year earlier. The order book made up 81% of that trading, up from 54% [3]. Evernorth also reported that Q2 trading was 16% below Q1 2026, a quarter it said included an unusually heavy February [3]. DefiLlama’s XRPL page, captured in September 2026, showed $9.69 million of DEX volume over 24 hours and $45.19 million over seven days [4]. CCN’s summary of Blockworks’ Q2 2026 figures said decentralized exchange volume on the ledger dropped by 36% [2].
Stablecoin pairs are a growing part of ledger trading. The Crypto Times reported on 3 July 2026 that, according to Evernorth, the RLUSD/XRP pair processed about $900 million over six months. That was nearly 90% of all RLUSD trading on the ledger. The same report said RLUSD’s share of on-chain trading rose from under 1% to about 12% during 2026 [6]. The split between RLUSD and XRP trading is covered in how much XRPL trading involves RLUSD. Whether these volumes amount to usable depth is covered in how deep XRP’s market liquidity is.
Analysis. Valued at the $1.04 quarter-end price reported by CCN [2], Evernorth’s 4.42 million XRP a day is about $4.6 million a day. That is small next to the $2.2 billion of spot volume Cryptonomist reported for a single September day [1].
Evernorth also reported that on-chain exchange volume across blockchain networks fell 46% year over year in the same period [3].
How do trackers count volume, and what do they leave out?
Evernorth rebuilds its trading volume from Dune’s native XRP Ledger tables. It counts the XRP side of each swap once per trade and gross of direction, so the figure measures turnover rather than accumulation [3]. It excludes trades between two non-XRP assets, which were 18% of trades and about 9% of value in Q2 2026. It counts only the address that initiates activity, so accounts providing resting liquidity are not counted [3]. Evernorth states that its XRP-denominated measures and dollar-denominated cross-network figures are not directly comparable [3].
Analysis. Evernorth’s adjustments are about which pairs and which addresses to count. Its published method describes no filter for wash trading or self-trading. The exchange figures in Cryptonomist and CCN state no adjustment method at all. Each tracker also uses a different unit and window: Evernorth uses XRP per day, DefiLlama uses dollars over 24 hours and seven days, and CCN’s summary of Blockworks gives a quarterly percentage. Their results cannot be lined up directly. Bots and spam on the ledger are covered in how much XRP Ledger activity is bots, spam or wash trading.
Who is doing the trading?
Evernorth reported for Q2 2026 that accounts initiating order-book trades fell from 1,864 to 1,111 a day, while each traded 3,217 XRP a day against 1,072 a year earlier [3]. Evernorth calls more volume through fewer accounts a pattern one would expect as professional flow takes a larger share [3]. It also reported that over six quarters to Q2 2026, XRP-paired pools grew 26% while trading through those pools fell 74% [3].
Analysis. A small number of accounts moving larger amounts fits Evernorth’s reading. It also fits market makers or automated programs trading repeatedly. Ledger totals alone do not tell these apart.
What is the strongest case against trusting the reported numbers?
21Shares’ page for its TOXR fund states that XRP is largely unregulated and that XRP investments may be more susceptible to fraud and manipulation than more regulated investments. The page lists lack of liquidity among XRP’s risks [7]. The single-day futures figures on this page come from one secondary article. That article says it was produced with the assistance of artificial intelligence, and it gives the CME and Binance futures figure as about $9 billion in its key takeaways and $9.4 billion in its body [1]. The XRP Ledger figures come from Evernorth’s own report [3] and from CCN’s summary of Blockworks [2], not from an independent audit. The reading that heavy volume reflects large holders building positions is weighed against holder data in whether XRP whales are accumulating.

- Evernorth reported for Q2 2026 that accounts initiating order-book trades fell from 1,864 to 1,111 a day while each traded 3,217 XRP a day, against 1,072 a year earlier. Over six quarters, XRP-paired pools grew 26% while trading through them fell 74%.
- Evernorth’s published method (2 September 2026) counts the XRP side of each swap once per trade and gross of direction, so it measures turnover rather than accumulation. It excludes trades between two non-XRP assets (18% of trades and about 9% of value in Q2 2026) and counts only the address that initiates activity.
- DefiLlama’s XRPL page, as captured in September 2026, showed $9.69 million of DEX volume over 24 hours and $45.19 million over seven days.
- Coinbase’s page for its October 2026 XRP futures contract (500 XRP per contract), as captured in September 2026, showed $42.1 million of open interest and $14.83 million of 24-hour volume.
- Crypto Times reported on 3 July 2026 that, according to Evernorth, the RLUSD/XRP pair processed about $900 million over six months, nearly 90% of RLUSD trading on the XRP Ledger. It also reported, citing Evernorth, that RLUSD’s share of on-chain trading rose from under 1% to about 12% during 2026.
- 21Shares’ page for its TOXR fund (key facts as of 29 September 2026) states that XRP is largely unregulated and that XRP investments may be more susceptible to fraud and manipulation than more regulated investments. It lists lack of liquidity among XRP’s risks.
- 23 September 2026 report: combined XRP futures volume on CME and Binance was about $9 billion against $2.2 billion of spot volume over the same period; CME open interest was $756 million and Binance’s nearly $700 million (Cryptonomist).
- May 2026: CME XRP futures generated $3.7 billion in notional volume (CME Group, Q2 2026 report).
- Q2 2026: about 2,435 accounts traded daily on the ledger’s exchange; order-book trades were initiated by 1,111 accounts a day against 1,864 a year earlier (Evernorth, 2 September 2026).
What we reason Analysis
- Derivatives turnover is several times spot turnover in both of the reports cited here. Cryptonomist’s 23 September 2026 figures give futures at about four times spot over one day. CCN’s Q2 2026 summary of Blockworks gives perpetual futures at about 2.7 times centralized exchange spot.
- The XRP Ledger’s own exchange is a small slice of XRP trading. Valued at the $1.04 quarter-end price reported by CCN, Evernorth’s 4.42 million XRP a day comes to about $4.6 million a day. DefiLlama’s September 2026 24-hour reading was $9.69 million. Cryptonomist reported $2.2 billion of spot volume for a single September day.
- Evernorth’s method removes non-XRP pairs and sets counting rules, but the published text describes no filter for wash trading or self-trading. Its volume is therefore recorded turnover, not proof of trades between independent parties. The same limit applies to the exchange-reported figures in Cryptonomist and CCN, which state no adjustment method.
- The XRPL volume trackers cannot be reconciled from what they publish. Evernorth counts in XRP and reports a 16% quarterly fall. CCN’s Blockworks summary reports a 36% drop without a stated unit. DefiLlama counts in dollars over 24-hour and 7-day windows. Evernorth’s own note says XRP-denominated and dollar figures are not directly comparable. A falling XRP price, down 20% in Q2 2026 according to CCN, would make dollar-based measures fall faster than XRP-based ones.
- Evernorth reads more volume through fewer order-book accounts as a sign of professional flow. Aggregate ledger counts alone cannot separate market makers, arbitrage programs and accounts trading with themselves. The pattern fits Evernorth’s reading but does not establish it.
What's still open
- The public secondary sources reviewed report only aggregate XRP spot volume figures, such as $2.2 billion over 24 hours (Cryptonomist, September 23, 2026) and $57.6 billion of centralized exchange spot volume in Q2 2026 (Blockworks’ State of XRP report, as reported by CCN on Yahoo Finance, August 20, 2026), with no venue-by-venue breakdown.
- No public source had established a wash-trade-adjusted figure for XRP’s total centralized exchange volume, with its adjustment method stated, as of October 1, 2026.
- As of October 1, 2026, CCN’s write-up of Blockworks’ Q2 2026 report gave no unit or comparison period for the 36% fall in XRPL decentralized exchange volume.
- As of 1 October 2026, no public account-level study had shown how much of the XRP Ledger order-book volume concentrated in about 1,111 daily accounts in Q2 2026 is market making, arbitrage or self-trading.
In plain English
XRP is bought and sold in three places: ordinary crypto exchanges, futures markets where traders take positions on its price, and an exchange built into the XRP Ledger itself. Recent reports show several times more money moving through futures than through plain buying and selling. Volume counts every trade, so coins traded back and forth add to it without anyone ending up holding more. No public figure yet says how much of the reported volume is trading staged to inflate the numbers.
