Short answer
Yes, on at least one venue: according to Bitnomial’s announcement of November 3, 2025, RLUSD and XRP margin deposits are available for institutional clients trading on Bitnomial Exchange. Bitnomial said on November 3, 2025 that RLUSD and XRP margin deposits are now available for institutional clients trading leveraged perpetuals, futures, and options on Bitnomial Exchange. That is a company-reported statement.

Where can XRP be posted as margin today?
Flare reported on August 12, 2026 that FXRP is now supported as collateral on Derive, which Flare describes as the largest onchain options exchange in DeFi [5]. FXRP is minted through Flare’s FAssets system while the underlying XRP stays on the XRP Ledger, as explained on what FXRP is and how much of it is used [5].
This page holds no verified source for other venues.
Bitnomial said on November 3, 2025 that RLUSD and XRP margin deposits are now available for institutional clients trading leveraged perpetuals, futures, and options on Bitnomial Exchange [7].
CME is the exception among the venues in this page’s sources. Mike Higgins, described by Bitcoinist as Ripple Prime’s international CEO, said in a March 17 interview that CME “doesn’t take XRP as good collateral” [6].
How does Coinbase International value XRP collateral?
Coinbase says the value of collateral is its notional value multiplied by the collateral weight [1]. Coinbase also caps how much of each asset an organization can use, calculated as a percentage of the asset’s average daily quantity, and collateral above the cap does not count toward portfolio value [1].
Coinbase’s Margin Offset feature reduces the total margin required for a portfolio of perpetual positions, and users opt in per portfolio [2]. Its offset table, dated June 6, 2025, gives an XRP perpetual against XRP spot a weight of 0.93, the same as the SOL and DOGE pairs and below the 0.95 for the BTC and ETH pairs [2]. Coinbase notes the table is based on current market conditions and is subject to change [2].
Why did Coinbase International keep XRP when it removed other coins?
Coinbase’s notice says that from September 29, 2026, AERO, ALGO, APT, ARB, ATOM, AVAX, BCH, BNB, BONK, CRV, DOT, FARTCOIN, FIL, ICP, INJ, JASMY, LTC, ONDO, PENGU, OP, PEPE, PUMP, SEI, SHIB, SUI, UNI, VET, XLM and ZORA no longer count toward eligible collateral [1]. XRP is not on the list. Coindoo reported that the cut covers 29 altcoins and that Coinbase has not said why it removed them [4].
XRP’s place in the higher limit tier is consistent with it passing the same kind of screen, but Coinbase has not linked its collateral list to these inputs. Counting the two lists, 16 of the 45 non-USDC assets stay eligible, including ADA, DOGE, HBAR and LINK, so staying on the list is not unique to XRP [1]. For XRP to stay eligible, it would have to keep passing a test Coinbase has not published.
Can FXRP be used as margin on Derive?
Flare says FXRP holders can post it as collateral on Derive and trade XRP options, perpetuals and spot against it, while the underlying XRP stays on the XRP Ledger [5]. Flare says options, perpetuals and spot all margin from one FXRP balance under Derive’s Portfolio Margin V2, and that Derive’s XRP options are cash-settled in USDC rather than by delivery of XRP [5]. Flare describes the market as permissionless, with no KYC and no gatekeeper [5]. The same post notes that CME listed the first CFTC-approved XRP options in October 2025 [5].
Which other major exchanges accept XRP as margin, and at what offsets?
Bitnomial describes its clearinghouse as the only US registered derivatives clearing organization accepting digital assets as native margin collateral [7]. Its release does not state the haircut it applies to XRP.
Some XRP margin reaches venues indirectly. Bitcoin.com News reported that MXRPY, which XRP holders can access through Upshift starting May 15, uses XRP as collateral through FalconX to support options strategies across venues such as Deribit [10].
Coinbase Derivatives, which Bitcoin.com News described on July 30, 2025 as a CFTC-registered designated contract market, lists monthly XRP futures [9]. According to Bitnomial’s November 3, 2025 announcement (Company-reported), RLUSD and XRP margin deposits are now available as collateral for institutional clients trading on Bitnomial Exchange.
Why does CME not accept XRP as margin, and what would change that?
Higgins did not give CME’s reason. He described Ripple Prime’s workaround: a client posts XRP as margin, and Ripple Prime gives dollar credit to trade on CME [6]. That route is covered on whether Ripple Prime accepts XRP as collateral.
CFTC staff Letter 26-05, dated February 6, 2026, sets conditions for FCMs holding digital assets as customer margin [8]. For futures customer accounts, a registered DCO must accept the asset, and the FCM values it using that DCO’s haircuts [8]. For accounts the letter calls 30.7 customer accounts, the asset can instead be the underlying commodity of a futures contract listed on a CFTC-registered DCM [8]. For CME itself to take XRP, the clearing organization behind those futures accounts would have to accept it. The regulated route to hedging is covered on whether XRP can be hedged on regulated markets.
Can XRP be both the underlying asset and the collateral for a derivative?
Yes, on two venues covered here. On Derive, FXRP collateral backs XRP options and perpetuals [5]. On Coinbase International, XRP is accepted collateral and an XRP perpetual can offset XRP spot [1][2]. One holding can serve as collateral and as the subject of the trade at once, which is the question on whether the same XRP can do several jobs.
What are the limits and risks of using XRP as margin?
Coinbase says the margin offset credit is removed once a position no longer qualifies, and that users whose equity falls below initial margin are restricted to risk-reducing trades [2]. Coindoo reported that Coinbase says collateral liquidations may occur automatically when a portfolio’s margin falls below its maintenance requirement [4]. Flare’s own post says writing options on Derive is not a free hedge and carries real risk [5]. What a falling XRP price does to collateral is covered on what happens to an XRP-backed loan if XRP’s price drops. The strongest limits on this answer are that CME, according to Higgins, does not take XRP [6], and that Coinbase International serves only eligible clients outside the United States [4].
What we know
- As of September 30, 2026, Coinbase International Exchange’s help page lists XRP among the assets that can be used as collateral in addition to USDC for perpetual futures positions [1].
- Coinbase International’s notice says that from September 29, 2026, assets including ALGO, AVAX, DOT, LTC, SUI, UNI and XLM no longer count toward eligible collateral; XRP is not on that list [1]. Coindoo reported on September 29, 2026 that the notice covers 29 altcoins [4].
- Coinbase International’s margin offset table, dated June 6, 2025, gives an XRP perpetual against XRP spot a weight of 0.93, and Coinbase says the table is subject to change [2].
- As of September 30, 2026, Coinbase International places XRP and SOL in a perpetuals position-limit tier of up to $40,000,000 notional at leverage up to 4x [3].
- Coindoo reported on September 29, 2026 that Coinbase International Exchange derivatives are available only to eligible clients in selected regions outside the United States, and that Coinbase has not said why it removed the 29 assets [4].
- Flare reported on August 12, 2026 that FXRP is supported as collateral on Derive for XRP options, perpetuals and spot positions under Derive’s Portfolio Margin V2 [5].
- Bitnomial said on November 3, 2025 that XRP margin deposits were available for institutional clients trading perpetuals, futures and options, subject to all applicable regulatory approvals [7].
- Mike Higgins of Ripple Prime said in a March 17 interview reported by Bitcoinist that CME does not take XRP as good collateral, and that Ripple Prime gives dollar credit against posted XRP for CME trading [6].
- CFTC staff Letter 26-05 (February 6, 2026) lets an FCM count a non-security digital asset in futures customer accounts when a registered DCO accepts it, using that DCO’s haircuts [8].
What we reason Analysis
- XRP’s place in Coinbase International’s higher position-limit tier, together with Coinbase’s statement that it sets limits from order book depth, volumes and stress tests, is consistent with XRP staying on the collateral list. Coinbase has not linked the two. This follows from the limit table, the limit-review statement and the September 29 notice [1][3][4].
- Counting the collateral list against the removal notice, 16 of the 45 listed non-USDC assets stay eligible, including ADA, DOGE, HBAR and LINK, so staying on the list is not unique to XRP. This follows from the two Coinbase lists [1].
- An offset weight of 0.93 means Coinbase’s risk system credits most of a matched XRP spot and XRP perpetual pair toward margin relief, the same weight as SOL and DOGE pairs and below the 0.95 for BTC and ETH pairs. This follows from the June 6, 2025 offset table [2].
- For CME itself to take XRP as margin under Letter 26-05’s futures-account condition, the clearing organization for those accounts would have to accept XRP. This follows from the letter’s DCO condition and the Higgins interview [6][8].
- On Derive and Coinbase International, XRP (or FXRP) can back positions whose underlying is XRP, so one holding can be collateral and the subject of the trade at once. This follows from the Flare announcement and the Coinbase collateral and offset pages [1][2][5].
What's still open
- As of September 30, 2026, I could not find any CME document stating its accepted collateral list; the CME position here rests on a Ripple Prime executive’s statement.
- As of September 30, 2026, I could not find the haircut Bitnomial applies to XRP, or whether all the regulatory approvals it named were obtained.
- As of September 30, 2026, I could not find any FCM accepting XRP as customer margin under CFTC Letter 26-05.
- As of September 30, 2026, it is not publicly stated whether Coinbase Derivatives, the US venue that lists XRP futures, accepts XRP itself as collateral.
- In which year did the Higgins interview with Bitcoinist take place? Bitcoinist reports only that it was on March 17.
In plain English
Some trading venues let people put up XRP, instead of dollars, as the security deposit behind bets on XRP’s future price. Coinbase’s international exchange, which serves eligible clients outside the United States, still counts XRP for this after dropping many other coins on September 29, 2026. Flare says a blockchain-based venue called Derive has accepted a token version of XRP for this since August 2026. A Ripple Prime executive said CME, a large US futures exchange, does not take XRP as a deposit. If prices fall, these venues can count less of the deposit or sell it to cover losses.
