Where has liquid XRP gone in 2026, and is the '50% drop on exchanges' true?
Also asked as: “Did XRP on exchanges fall 50%?” · “How much XRP is held by ETFs, escrow and treasury companies?”

Short answer
XRP Insights counted 31.68 billion in Ripple’s escrow and 4.74 billion in Ripple’s wallets on October 3, 2026, at least 21.14 billion in exchange wallets on September 26, and 1.19 billion in US ETFs and index funds on October 2. The ‘50% drop’ fits only one narrow exchange measure, reported down 57% from October 2025 to January 2, 2026.
The full answer
XRP did not go to one place. Three separate counts matter here, and they should not be mixed: how much XRP exists and circulates, how much sits in wallets identified as belonging to exchanges, and how much can be traded right away. Public sources give dated figures for the first two. No tracker measures the third directly.
How much XRP exists, and how much has Ripple released?
Ripple reports its holdings as of the last day of each quarter, split between XRP in its wallets and XRP in on-ledger escrow [1]. On June 30, 2026, Ripple said it held 37,656,053,914 XRP, with 32.6 billion in escrow, and that 62,329,587,596 XRP had been distributed [1]. XRP Insights put the escrow at 31.68 billion and Ripple’s operational wallets at 4.74 billion on October 3, 2026 [2]. It says it sums escrow from the escrow objects on the ledger itself [3].
The escrow shrinks by design. In 2017 Ripple locked 55 billion XRP in escrows that release up to 1 billion a month, with unused XRP placed into new escrows [4]. The page on how the XRP escrow works covers the schedule. On October 1, 2026, U.Today reported Whale Alert data showing Ripple locked 700 million XRP back into escrow [5].
Circulating supply is a provider’s choice, not a ledger reading. The ledger records balances, escrow objects and destroyed fees, and each data provider decides which balances count as liquid [6]. Chain & Ticker, citing CoinGecko, gave 62.9 billion XRP in circulation after the September 18, 2026 close [7].

How much XRP is in exchange wallets, by tracker?
Each tracker below is its own series. They cover different venues and should not be joined.
XRP Insights reads exchange balances from attributed XRP Ledger wallets [3]. On September 26, 2026 it counted 21.14 billion XRP in those wallets, a net fall of 625.9 million in that week, and called the total a verified floor because only attributable wallets are counted [3]. Its report does not say how many exchanges those wallets cover.
CryptoQuant data, reported by Yellow.com, covers three exchanges. Reserves on Upbit, Binance and Bithumb fell to roughly 10.84 billion XRP by August 19, 2026, from about 11.08 billion in late May and early June, a drop of about 2.2% [8]. Upbit alone held 6.40 billion [8].
Exchange balances are not the exchanges’ own XRP. Coinpaper notes that platforms such as Binance, Uphold and Upbit hold large XRP balances on behalf of customers as client assets [9].
How much XRP do the US ETFs hold, fund by fund?
| Fund | December 31, 2025 | June 30, 2026 | Late September 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bitwise XRP ETF | 131,223,200 [10] | 286,838,446 [10] | 413,140,980 (September 27, Bitwise’s website) [14] |

Late-September figures other than Bitwise’s are as reported by Bitcoin.com News on September 28, 2026. Filing figures are rounded to whole XRP. Franklin’s filing also gives 159,659,740 XRP on March 31, 2026 [11].
Bitcoin.com News reported on September 28, 2026 that the seven funds held 1,179.62 million XRP, equal to 1.18% of the fixed 100 billion supply [15]. Messari reported that US spot XRP ETFs ended the first quarter of 2026 with 775.4 million XRP, up 1.9% on the quarter, after a peak of 810.2 million on March 3 [16]. XRP Insights takes its ETF holdings from each issuer’s website [3]. More detail on the funds is on the page about how much XRP the ETFs hold.
What changed between January 1, 2026 and October?
The ETF rows show the clearest change. Bitwise XRP ETF went from 131,223,200 XRP at the end of 2025 [10] to 413,140,980 on September 27, 2026, by its own website [14].
Evernorth barely moved. Bitget News reported that Evernorth held 473,276,430 XRP on December 31, 2025: 211 million from Arrington Capital, 126.8 million directly from Ripple and 84 million bought on the open market [18]. Its S-4/A of August 12, 2026 gives the same figure as the minimum it expects at closing [17]. Armada Acquisition Corp. II shareholders approved the business combination on September 30, 2026 [19]. Other listed holders appear on the page about public companies holding XRP.
The escrow fell from Ripple’s 32.6 billion on June 30, 2026 [1] to XRP Insights’ 31.68 billion on October 3 [2]. For exchange wallets, the XRP Insights report gives only a weekly change, and the CryptoQuant series quoted by Yellow.com starts in late May [3] [8].
Is the “50% drop on exchanges” claim true?
Hype Check. The claim says XRP on exchanges fell 50% to about 1.5 billion in 2026, so available XRP is running out and the price must rise.
On January 2, 2026, XRP Insights reported that exchange-held XRP dropped to 1.6 billion, down 57% since October, an eight-year low [20]. Yellow.com reported the same day that reserves on centralized exchanges fell to 1.6 billion in late December, the lowest level since 2018, under a headline saying analysts question the supply-shock theory [8]. Neither report, as published, names the exchanges in that count.
Broader counts are many times larger. On January 26, 2026, Yellow.com reported reserves on Binance and Upbit alone near 9 billion XRP [8]. By August 19, 2026, CryptoQuant data put Upbit at 6.40 billion [8]. XRP Insights’ attributed-wallet floor stood at 21.14 billion on September 26, 2026 [3].
Verdict: partly supported. One narrow exchange measure did fall by more than half, 57% between October 2025 and early January 2026, XRP Insights reported [20]. The fall came before 2026, the reported low was 1.6 billion, and the count does not describe all exchanges. The “price must rise” part has no support in these sources. Canary XRP ETF’s filing says XRP’s value fell 43.27%, from $1.84 on December 31, 2025 to $1.04 on June 30, 2026 [12]. On August 20, 2026, Yellow.com wrote that falling exchange balances can reduce the XRP immediately available for sale but do not guarantee stronger prices [8].
A version that matches the sources: one exchange-supply measure fell 57% to 1.6 billion between October 2025 and early January 2026. Other exchange counts stayed far higher through 2026, and the escrow kept releasing XRP.
What can no tracker count?
Immediately tradable XRP is not measured by any public tracker. The XRP Insights exchange figure is a floor that leaves out unattributed wallets [3], and exchange balances belong to customers [9]. ETF purchases add another blind spot: Canary’s 10-Q says its XRP trades are typically made over the counter, not on a trading platform [12]. XRP held privately by institutions, kept as inventory by market makers, or lent out and pledged as collateral has no public total as of October 4, 2026. The page on how much XRP is available to trade takes this further.
What do sources say about the effect on price?
Bitwise XRP ETF’s filings valued XRP at $1.82 on December 31, 2025 and $1.04 on June 30, 2026, using the CME CF New York reference rate [10]. Over the same half-year, Bitwise’s holdings more than doubled [10].
Bitcoin.com News reported on September 28, 2026 that the funds’ net assets of $1.77 billion stood against $1.79 billion of cumulative net inflows, so the average dollar invested was slightly underwater [15]. The same report said one month’s maximum escrow release is about 85% of everything the US ETFs had gathered since launch, while noting that unused amounts have historically been re-locked [15]. It also wrote that every XRP entering an ETF comes off exchange order books [15]. Canary’s filing describes over-the-counter buying instead [12]. Whether ETF demand tightens supply is covered on the page asking whether ETF purchases make XRP scarcer.
What we know
- Ripple said that on June 30, 2026 it held 37,656,053,914 XRP, that 32.6 billion XRP sat in escrow, and that 62,329,587,596 XRP had been distributed.
- XRP Insights counted 31.68 billion XRP in Ripple’s escrow and 4.74 billion in Ripple’s operational wallets on October 3, 2026.
- U.Today reported Whale Alert data showing Ripple locked 700 million XRP back into escrow on October 1, 2026.
- XRP Insights counted at least 21.14 billion XRP in publicly attributed exchange wallets on September 26, 2026, a net fall of 625.9 million in that week, and called the total a verified floor.
- CryptoQuant data reported by Yellow.com showed 10.84 billion XRP across Upbit, Binance and Bithumb on August 19, 2026, against about 11.08 billion in late May and early June.
- Bitwise XRP ETF held 131,223,200 XRP on December 31, 2025, 286,838,446 on June 30, 2026 (its 10-Q filings) and 413,140,980 on September 27, 2026 (its website).
- Bitcoin.com News reported on September 28, 2026 that seven US funds held 1,179.62 million XRP, 1.18% of the 100 billion supply.
- Evernorth’s S-4/A, filed August 12, 2026, says it expects to launch with at least 473,276,430 XRP at closing; Armada Acquisition Corp. II shareholders approved the merger on September 30, 2026.
- XRP Insights reported on January 2, 2026 that exchange-held XRP fell to 1.6 billion, down 57% since October.
- Canary XRP ETF’s filing says XRP’s value fell 43.27%, from $1.84 on December 31, 2025 to $1.04 on June 30, 2026.
What we reason Analysis
- The 1.6 billion figure reported on January 2, 2026 cannot cover all exchanges. CryptoQuant data reported by Yellow.com put Upbit alone at 6.40 billion XRP in August 2026, and XRP Insights’ attributed-wallet floor was 21.14 billion in September.
- The reported 57% fall ran from October 2025 to late December 2025, according to XRP Insights and Yellow.com, so a claim that it happened in 2026 misdates it.
- Ripple’s escrow figure of 32.6 billion on June 30, 2026 and XRP Insights’ ledger sum of 31.68 billion on October 3, 2026 differ by about 0.92 billion. On those two sources, XRP outside escrow grew over that period, though the two counts come from different counters.
- Bitwise XRP ETF’s holdings more than doubled in the first half of 2026 while XRP’s value fell 43%, according to the Bitwise and Canary filings. ETF accumulation did not by itself hold the price up over that half-year.
- US ETF holdings of 1,179.62 million XRP (Bitcoin.com, September 28, 2026) are about 5.6% of XRP Insights’ 21.14 billion exchange-wallet floor (September 26, 2026).
- Bitcoin.com wrote that every XRP entering an ETF comes off exchange order books, while Canary’s 10-Q says its purchases are typically made over the counter. Neither source shows where the dealers obtain the XRP.
What's still open
- As of October 4, 2026, no public source gives a total for XRP held privately by institutions, for market makers’ XRP inventory, or for XRP that has been lent out or pledged as collateral.
- Which exchanges the 1.6 billion figure covers is not stated in the January 2, 2026 reports by XRP Insights and Yellow.com.
- XRP Insights’ September 26, 2026 report does not state how many exchanges its attributed wallets cover.
- A like-for-like change since January 1, 2026 in escrow and exchange-wallet balances is not established as of October 4, 2026: neither XRP Insights’ weekly report nor Ripple’s XRP page gives a January 1 figure on the same basis as its latest one.
In plain English
Most of the XRP that public trackers can see sits in a few places: Ripple’s locked escrow, Ripple’s own wallets, exchange wallets, and US funds. Ripple still holds tens of billions, exchange wallets hold at least 21 billion by one count, and US funds hold about 1.2 billion. The popular story that half of all exchange XRP vanished comes from one narrow count that fell in late 2025, and broader counts are many times larger. XRP’s price also fell by about 43% in the first half of 2026. Nobody can count the XRP held privately, kept by trading firms, or lent out.
