How could a corporate treasurer end up using XRP?

Short answer
A treasurer can hold XRP directly: Ripple said on April 1, 2026 that Ripple Treasury, built on GTreasury, lets finance teams hold, receive and manage XRP and RLUSD beside cash. Moving payments in XRP is less settled. SBI Remit launched an XRP-based transfer service in September 2023, yet crypto.news reported in July 2026 Ripple’s settlement runs mostly on RLUSD.

What path would run from corporate cash to XRP?
The path below is the author’s assembly of what each Ripple product says it does. No public source shows the whole path running end to end.
- Cash sits in the treasury system. Ripple said on 1 April 2026 that in Ripple Treasury, XRP and RLUSD balances appear within the same account structure as cash, valued in real time [1].
- Idle cash moves into a dollar token or a tokenized fund. Ripple Treasury’s January 2026 launch post lists tokenized money market funds such as BlackRock BUIDL and a Ripple MMF Portal on the XRP Ledger [2].
- A payment goes to Ripple Payments. Ripple said on 5 November 2025 that Ripple Payments is a cross-border platform using RLUSD and XRP, and that its total volumes had passed $95 billion [5].
- Financing comes from Ripple Prime. The January 2026 launch post lists Ripple Prime for overnight secured repo with RLUSD collateral and U.S. Treasury backing [2]. The repo step has its own page: can companies get repo financing through Ripple Treasury?.
- A bridge asset sits in the middle. The same post claims 3-5 second settlement using digital assets as bridge currency [2]. That line says “digital assets”; it does not name XRP.
- The supplier receives its own currency.
XRP could appear at only one step, the bridge. The treasurer’s balances can stay in RLUSD or dollars at every other step. How a bridge works is covered in how Ripple’s On-Demand Liquidity uses XRP.
On November 5, 2025, Ripple described it, after the Rail acquisition, as a cross-border platform “using Ripple USD (RLUSD) and XRP”, and said total Ripple Payments volumes had passed $95 billion [5].
What can a treasurer do in Ripple Treasury today, and what is still planned?
Ripple said on 1 April 2026 that treasury teams can view, hold, receive and manage fiat and digital liquidity held at their banks and custody providers in a single system, with multiple customers in beta before that day’s general availability launch [1]. The same release called Digital Asset Accounts and Unified Treasury the first two capabilities, and said the framework “will soon expand” to connect with Ripple products for cross-border and intercompany settlement and 24/7 yield through overnight repo [1]. The release announced those connections; whether they have gone live is listed under what is not yet known.
Ripple Treasury’s payments page says embedded netting consolidates intercompany and third-party obligations before they reach the banking network [4]. Netting cuts the number of payments that need any rail at all, XRP included.
The scale figures are Ripple’s own. In its 1 April 2026 press release, Ripple said that in 2025 Ripple Treasury facilitated $13 trillion in payments volume for customers ranging from SMEs to Fortune 500 companies (Ripple, company-reported). Ripple Treasury’s homepage, as displayed on 29 September 2026, shows $12.5T in payments volume and 13,000 connected banks [3].
Why does the GTreasury acquisition matter for XRP? Ripple said on November 5, 2025 that institutions turning to stablecoins like RLUSD for treasury payments and collateral were “a key reason” it acquired GTreasury in October 2025 [5].
Ripple said on 5 November 2025 that institutions turning to stablecoins like RLUSD for treasury payments and collateral was a key reason it acquired GTreasury in October 2025 [5]. It said GTreasury manages trillions of dollars of volume for Fortune 500 customers keen to use stablecoins and digital assets to move money 24/7 [5]. crypto.news put the price at about $1 billion in July 2026 [7].
CaptainAltcoin reported on 10 September 2026 that the roughly $13 trillion of GTreasury payment activity does not mean $13 trillion was settled using XRP [8]. The same article summed up the pattern: “Connected to Ripple” does not mean “uses XRP” [8].
The purchase changes distribution. Ripple now sits inside corporate finance workflows instead of selling to them from outside. The reason Ripple itself gave for the deal names RLUSD, not XRP.
The Ripple Treasury homepage showed “$12.5T Payments Volume” and “13,000 Connected Banks” when checked on September 29, 2026 [3].
Would a CFO need to ask for XRP?
Ripple’s April 2026 release says Ripple Treasury gives the CFO’s office a place to manage digital and fiat assets with no need to navigate custody, wallets or exchanges on their own [1]. The Coin Republic noted on 18 September 2026 that RLUSD targets dollar stability, while XRP carries market-price exposure [9]. It also reported that Ripple’s April 2026 survey of more than 1,000 finance leaders found 74% believed stablecoins could improve cash-flow efficiency, and that those figures reflected Ripple’s own research, not independent adoption data [9].
crypto.news argued on 8 July 2026 that institutional settlement requires a stable, audited, dollar-denominated instrument, and that an asset that can move ten percent in a day is disqualified from the cash leg [6].
A CFO’s request would be to pay a supplier at the lowest all-in cost. Whether that payment touches XRP would be a routing decision inside Ripple’s system, explained in how Ripple decides whether a payment routes through XRP. This is why XRP could work as a hidden layer, a point taken further in whether banks and businesses need to hold XRP.
Has any corporate payment gone through this chain with XRP in the middle?
As of October 1, 2026, none has been found in public sources. CaptainAltcoin set the test on 10 September 2026: for the $13 trillion claim to hold, there would need to be evidence that the underlying payments actually used XRP [8]. No such evidence has been published.
The examples that do exist point to RLUSD. crypto.news reported on 8 July 2026 that the tokenized-Treasury settlement Ripple ran with JPMorgan, Mastercard and Ondo cleared on the XRP Ledger, and the instrument that carried the money was RLUSD [6]. The same article found that inside Ripple’s product stack, the asset doing settlement work is predominantly RLUSD, not XRP [6].
For this to change, three things would have to be true, and each is checkable. Ripple Treasury’s announced payment connection would need to go live; a named corporate payment would need to show an XRP leg; and Ripple would need to disclose what share of Ripple Payments volume uses XRP.
What accounting, audit and policy steps would a treasurer need before any XRP touches the flow?
Ripple says XRP balances in Ripple Treasury are valued in real time and recorded with the same discipline as every other transaction [1]. The January 2026 launch post says the digital-asset features run with policy-based controls and full audit trails [2].
For the RLUSD leg, Ripple states that RLUSD is issued by Standard Custody & Trust Company, a Ripple subsidiary, under a limited-purpose trust charter granted by the NYDFS [12]. It says reserves are held in cash, short-term US Treasuries and cash equivalents, with BNY Mellon as a reserve custodian [12].
For the financing leg, ICObench wrote in May 2026 that collateral eligibility in prime brokerage requires custody agreements, defined haircuts, real-time valuation, liquidation procedures and risk committee approval at every counterparty [11].
A treasurer holding XRP directly would need an investment policy that allows a price-volatile asset, plus board and auditor sign-off. A treasurer whose payment only passes through XRP inside Ripple’s routing might never hold it, so the policy burden would fall on Ripple and its liquidity providers instead.
What is the strongest evidence against this path?
crypto.news concluded on 25 July 2026 that corporate treasury runs on fiat and that the acquired businesses give Ripple a path to institutional success that does not require XRP demand [7]. Its 8 July 2026 article found that fee burn is negligible, collateral is real but largely internal, and settlement flows to the stablecoin, putting the XRP share of Ripple Prime’s business at “a sliver” [6].
Ripple’s own statements point the same way. Ripple said on 5 November 2025 that RLUSD was already in use as collateral at Ripple Prime [5]. Benzinga reported that Ripple Prime’s Higgins described Ripple’s dollar-backed stablecoin RLUSD as becoming part of the firm’s settlement and collateral strategy [10].
The bull reply, as crypto.news put it, is that RLUSD adoption seeds the ledger with liquidity that XRP collateral and bridging could later plug into; it called this a claim about sequencing whose first half is observable and whose second half is not yet [6]. The full counter-case is on the page asking whether Ripple Payments requires XRP at all, and the link between company growth and the token is covered in does Ripple’s success lift XRP’s price.
crypto.news audited Ripple’s acquisitions on July 25, 2026 and found that the acquired businesses run primarily on fiat, traditional assets and RLUSD, with treasury running on fiat, meaning Ripple “has built a path to institutional success that does not require XRP demand” [7].
What we know
- 1 April 2026: Ripple said Ripple Treasury shows XRP and RLUSD balances in the same account structure as cash, valued in real time, with customers in beta before general availability (Ripple, company-reported).
- 1 April 2026: Ripple said Digital Asset Accounts and Unified Treasury are the first two capabilities, and that the framework will soon connect to Ripple products for cross-border and intercompany settlement and 24/7 yield through overnight repo (Ripple, company-reported).
- January 2026: Ripple Treasury’s launch post listed Ripple Prime for overnight secured repo with RLUSD collateral, cross-border transfers settled in RLUSD, and 3-5 second settlement using digital assets as bridge currency (Ripple Treasury, company-reported).
- 5 November 2025: Ripple said institutions turning to stablecoins like RLUSD for treasury payments and collateral was a key reason it acquired GTreasury in October 2025 (Ripple, company-reported).
- 5 November 2025: Ripple said Ripple Payments is a cross-border platform using RLUSD and XRP, with total volumes above $95 billion (Ripple, company-reported).
- 8 July 2026: crypto.news reported that the asset doing settlement work inside Ripple’s product stack is predominantly RLUSD, not XRP (Secondary).
- 10 September 2026: CaptainAltcoin reported that the roughly $13 trillion of GTreasury payment activity does not mean $13 trillion was settled using XRP (Secondary).
- Ripple Treasury’s own website now describes its digital assets offering as a built and operational stack, not a roadmap, and says it settles cross-border intercompany transfers by converting fiat to a digital asset and back to local currency at the destination, and that it offers overnight repo through Ripple Prime using RLUSD and U.S. collateral. The pages carry no dates, so no public source shows when these features went live, and as of October 1, 2026 no independent confirmation or customer-specific launch announcement has been found.
What we reason Analysis
- The chain corporate cash, Ripple Treasury, RLUSD or tokenized fund, Ripple Payments, Ripple Prime financing, XRP bridge, destination asset is assembled from what each Ripple product says it does (Ripple April 2026 release, Ripple Treasury January 2026 post, Ripple November 2025 release). No source shows the full chain running end to end.
- A CFO would not need to ask for XRP: the treasurer’s request is to pay a supplier, and any XRP leg would be a routing choice inside Ripple’s system. This follows from Ripple’s own pitch that treasury teams need no wallets or exchanges, and from the launch post describing digital assets as a bridge currency.
- The GTreasury purchase shortens the distance between Ripple and corporate cash, but the reason Ripple gave for it names RLUSD, not XRP. This follows from Ripple’s November 2025 release.
What's still open
- As of October 1, 2026, no named corporate payment routed through XRP via Ripple Treasury has been found in Ripple’s April 2026 release, the Ripple Treasury launch post and product pages, Ripple’s November 2025 release, crypto.news’s July 2026 articles, CaptainAltcoin’s September 2026 piece or The Coin Republic’s September 2026 piece.
- As of October 1, 2026, no public source gives the share of Ripple Payments volume that uses XRP rather than RLUSD or fiat.
- As of October 1, 2026, the accounting rules a company would apply to an XRP balance are not addressed in the sources cited here.
In plain English
A company’s finance team manages its cash in special software. Ripple bought one such program, GTreasury, and now sells it as Ripple Treasury, which can show Ripple’s dollar coin RLUSD and the XRP token next to normal bank balances. If the company paid a supplier abroad through Ripple, Ripple’s system could in theory use XRP in the middle, while the finance team saw only dollars going out. No company payment has been shown to go this way yet, and a July 2026 crypto.news report found Ripple’s own settlement runs mostly on RLUSD.
